Kerala Congress (M) looks to expand influence to coastal heartlands
In a calculated move to strengthen its foothold among coastal communities, particularly the Latin Catholics, the regional party is seeking to tap into the wave of anxiety triggered by the Centre's Blue Economy Policy. Sensing an opportunity to build momentum, the Kerala Youth Front (M) [KYF(M)], the party's youth wing, will launch a Coastal Protection March that seeks to rally support across Kerala's shoreline.
The march, to be inaugurated by party chairman Jose K. Mani, will begin from Kasaragod on May 1 and conclude at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram on May 9, covering 670 km over nine days. Traversing through nine coastal districts, the march will stop at 50 key points and seek to connect fishing villages and communities along the way.
A series of public meetings will be held en route, with senior leaders including Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine and Government Chief Whip N. Jayaraj addressing gatherings to highlight the party's coastal vision.
According to Cyriac Chazhikadan, president of KYF(M), the march will raise three major demands including enactment of a law granting sea rights to coastal communities, complete cessation of sea sand mining and immediate implementation of the recommendations made by C.A.D.A.L. (Coastal Area Development and Livelihood), an organisation under the Latin Catholic church.
Party sources note that this initiative builds on a key demand raised by Jose K. Mani in the Rajya Sabha seeking sea rights for coastal communities, similar to the forest rights granted to indigenous groups. The rare public acknowledgment from the Catholic Church, hailing Mr. Mani's stance during the Rajya Sabha discussions on the Waqf Amendment Bill, has further bolstered the party's confidence in this coastal outreach.
'This should be seen as part of a strategic restructuring by the party, which has long balanced its traditional support from settler farmers with the evolving preferences of second-generation voters who are increasingly gravitating toward mainstream political parties,' observed a veteran Kerala Congress leader. He also attributes the move to a steady outmigration of the younger generation, particularly Syro-Malabar Catholics from central Travancore, causing a noticeable decline in the influx of young blood into the party.

Union Minister assures Karnataka of making arrangements for supply of fertilizers to tide over shortage
Union Minister for Agriculture Shivaraj Singh Chauhan has assured Karnataka, facing urea shortage, of making arrangements to supply the remaining quantum of fertilizers from the allocated share to help tide over the shortage, according to Karnataka Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy. In an official note, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said the Union Minister had made the assurance at a video conference of State Agriculture Ministers. Responding to an appeal by him to make up for the short supply from the Centre, the Union Minister had said that he would talk to the Secretary to the Union Fertilizers' Ministry and make arrangements, he noted. At the videoconference, Karnataka again blamed the Centre's short supply for the urea shortage in the State, and appealed to it to immediately provide the remaining stock of 2.67 lakh tonnes. Giving the break-up of the urea shortage, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy told Mr. Chauhan that the shortage in the State stood at 1.27 lakh tonnes in July and 1.4 lakh tonnes in August. Pointing out that the south-west monsoon is the mainstay for the State's agricultural sector and sowing would gain steam by August-September that marks the closing phase of this season, the Minister expressed concern that the sowing and standing crops may get hit if farmers did not get adequate fertilizers on time. He also noted that urea was in great demand as it was being used as a 'top-dose fertilizer' for most of the crops. Emphasising the point that shortage of urea and DAP had become a national problem, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said Ministers from several States had raised issues related to urea shortage at the videoconference. He also brought to the notice of Mr. Chauhan that the State government had begun the operations of University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences in Mandya from this academic year and appealed to him to expedite the process of bringing the new university under ICAR's recognition so that the Central funds for development of the university could be availed.

Can't ignore Pahalgam while deciding on J&K statehood: Supreme court
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Thursday sought the Centre's response to a petition seeking restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir, but said such a decision could not be taken without considering prevailing gro-und situation and incidents like Pahalgam, where terrorists had killed 26 people in cold blood on April 22. Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for Zahoor Ahmed Bhat, said that the judgment of SC's 5-judge bench led by then CJI and comprising current CJI B R Gavani had on December 11, 2023, upheld the Centre's decision to scrap Article 370 that gave special status to J&K and the bifurcation of the state into two UTs - J&K and Ladakh on the basis of SG Tushar Mehta'a categorical "restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest and as soon as possible" assurance. After more than one and half years, statehood had not been restored, Sankaranarayan said. Mehta said elections to the assembly of J&K had been held, as was promised in 2023 to the apex court. "SC is aware of the peculiar situation prevailing in J&K. Several aspects have to be taken into consideration before a decision on granting statehood to J&K can be taken.
