Gadkari's infra blitz: Kamptee highway to be 18m wide, mega biz hub planned at suburb

Time of India9 hours ago
Nagpur: The Jabalpur–Nagpur National Highway running through Kamptee will finally be widened to 18 metres, marking a major step toward easing persistent traffic congestion in this densely populated suburb.
The decision came after a high-level infrastructure review meeting chaired by Union minister for road transport and highways
Nitin Gadkari
.
For decades, the narrow 7-metre-wide stretch was a traffic nightmare due to heavy encroachments. Based on century-old records from the 1912–13 land survey, Gadkari instructed the district administration, Kamptee Municipal Council, and MahaMetro to carry out a coordinated encroachment clearance drive along the 18-metre demarcation line.
"This is not just about easing congestion — it's about ensuring Kamptee has the kind of modern infrastructure it deserves. The widening will open up future development while restoring the town's planned alignment," officials quoted Gadkari as saying.
In a parallel push for economic revitalisation, Gadkari also approved a proposal for a sprawling commercial complex on Nazul land near the proposed Kamptee Metro station.

The site — located near the tehsil office, bus stand, and municipal council — is expected to house shops, offices, and transport-related infrastructure. "It will resolve multiple issues at once — traffic, business congestion, and lack of civic space," said a senior official from his office.
In response to long-standing demands from revenue minister and district guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the Centre also cleared several road upgradation projects.
These include National Highway status for the Khairangna–Kondhali–Katol–Sawargaon–Badchicholi corridor, along with central funding for the Mauda–Mathani–Chapegadi–Kuhi state highway. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new highway link from Karanja in Washim district to the Madhya Pradesh border via Narkhed was also approved.
Gadkari also supported the redevelopment of Neelam Lawn and Shukravari Bazaar into a mixed-use civic and commercial space, with 30% earmarked for rehabilitating affected vendors and 70% for a mall, food court, and other facilities. A new Metro station near Dragon Palace in Kamptee is also on the cards, aimed at improving last-mile connectivity in the growing suburb.
The review meeting was attended by MLAs Krishna Khopde, Pravin Datke, and Charansingh Thakur, NMC commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari, collector Vipin Itankar, NIT chairman Sanjay Meena, and PWD chief engineer Dinesh Nandanwar.

'Offers great hope': Clerics make last ditch effort to save Nimisha Priya; Kerala nurse faces execution in Yemen on July 16

NEW DELHI: Desperate, last-minute attempts are being made to halt the execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, scheduled for July 16 in Yemen, with the intervention of senior religious leaders both in India and Yemen. The efforts are being led by Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, at the behest of influential Indian Sunni cleric Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar. A key meeting is expected to take place in Dhamar on Tuesday between representatives of Sheikh Habib Umar and the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the Yemeni national allegedly murdered by Priya in 2017. Talal's relative—who is also the Chief Justice of the Hodeidah State Court and a member of Yemen's Shura Council—has travelled to Dhamar to attend the talks, following the advice of Sheikh Habib. "The fact that he is a follower of Sheikh Habib Umar's Sufi order and the son of another prominent Sufi leader offers great hope," said Kanthapuram's office. "Along with persuading the family, he is also expected to meet the Attorney General to initiate urgent efforts to postpone the execution scheduled for tomorrow." Sources close to the process said the talks represent the first breakthrough in engaging with Talal's family, who had so far refused all contact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Windows Users & Owners Don't Forget To Do This Before Tuesday Read More Undo "It was only through Kanthapuram's intervention that communication with the family became possible for the first time," a source said. Tuesday's meeting will attempt to secure a final decision from the family on whether they will accept diya (blood money), as allowed under Shariah law. If agreed, this would offer a legally sanctioned route to halt Priya's execution. 'We see the agreement of the family to hold talks with representatives of the Sufi spiritual leader as a positive signal,' the source added. The government, meanwhile, told the Supreme Court on Monday that there is 'nothing much' it can do diplomatically, given the status of Yemen and the absence of formal recognition of its authorities. "The Government of India is trying its best," Attorney General R Venkataramani told the bench. "We have also engaged with some sheikhs who are very influential people there." He added: 'Yemen is not like any other part of the world where, through diplomatic processes or inter-governmental negotiation, something can be sought. It is very complex.' Priya, a nurse from Kerala's Palakkad district, was convicted in 2020 for murdering Mahdi—her former business partner—and dismembering his body. Her final appeal was rejected in 2023, and she remains in prison in Sana'a.

SC sends notice to UP govt on plea over QR code directive for eateries along 'kanwar' yatra route

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea challenging its directive requiring eateries along the 'kanwar' yatra route to display QR codes revealing the names and identities of their owners. A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh issued a notice to the state and scheduled the hearing for July 22 on a petition filed by academician Apoorvanand Jha and others. Last year, the top court had stayed similar orders issued by BJP-ruled states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, which had directed food establishments along the yatra routes to display details of their owners, staff, and other personnel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Undo Referring to a press release issued by the UP administration on June 25, Jha, said, "The new measures mandate the display of QR codes on all eateries along the kanwar route, which reveal the names and identities of the owners, thereby achieving the same discriminatory profiling that was previously stayed by this court." The petition said the state government's directive asking stall owners to reveal religious and caste identities under "lawful license requirements" breaches the right to privacy of the shop, dhaba, and restaurant owners. Live Events A large number of devotees travel from various places with 'kanwars' carrying holy water from the Ganga to perform 'jalabhishek' of Shivlings during the Hindu calendar month of 'Shravan'. Many believers shun consumption of meat during the month. Many don't even consume meals containing onions and garlic.
