Pro-Russian Hacktivist Group Disrupted by European Authorities

Bloomberg16-07-2025
European authorities said they've disrupted the computer infrastructure of a pro-Russian hacktivist group that's claimed responsibility for more than 1,000 denial-of-service attacks since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The law enforcement actions targeted a group calling itself NoName057(16) and consisted of a 'day of action' on Tuesday that involved the takedown of more than 100 servers worldwide used by the group to launch attacks, according to an announcement on Wednesday from Europol and Eurojust, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation. The actions also included two arrests in France and Spain, searches of two dozen homes in Spain, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, France and Poland, and the issuance of arrest warrants for six Russian nationals, including two believed to the 'main instigators' responsible for the group's attacks, the authorities said.

Passenger Yells ‘Death to Trump' on Scotland-Bound Flight

A bomb threat from a passenger who said he wanted to 'send a message' to President Donald Trump forced a Scotland-bound flight to make an emergency landing Sunday. Footage from inside the cabin shows the suspect, who police have identified as a 41-year-old man, pacing the aisle and yelling 'I'm going to bomb the plane. Death to America, death to Trump!' as stunned passengers look on. Trump, who is currently visiting Scotland, was at his Turnberry golf course at the time—about an hour's flight from where the incident took place, according to the New York Post. The passenger began making the threats roughly an hour into the easyJet flight from London's Luton Airport to Glasgow Airport, The Sun reported. After repeatedly yelling 'Allahu Akbar' while raising his fist, the man was tackled by a group of passengers. In another video obtained by The Sun, someone is heard asking the man, 'Why are you saying you're going to bomb the plane?' 'Because I want to send a message to Trump,' the suspect replied, while being held down in the aisle. 'He's in Scotland.' The pilots reportedly declared an emergency on approach to Glasgow Airport. Upon landing, the Airbus A319 was directed to a remote part of the airport as fire trucks rushed to the scene, The Sun reported. Police then boarded the aircraft, handcuffed the suspect, and escorted him off. Authorities later confirmed that no explosives were found on board, the Post reported. In a statement, Police Scotland said: 'We received a report of a man causing a disturbance on a flight arriving in Glasgow around 8.20am on Sunday, 27 July, 2025. 'Officers boarded the plane on its arrival and a 41-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody. Enquiries are continuing.' They later added: 'At this time we believe the incident was contained and that nobody else was involved. We are aware of videos circulating online and these are being assessed by counter terrorism officers.' An easyJet spokesperson told People that the suspect was removed 'due to their behaviour onboard.' 'easyJet's crew are trained to assess all situations and act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other customers is not compromised at any time,' the spokesperson said. 'The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is always easyJet's highest priority.' Trump on Sunday played a round of golf at his luxury resort before meeting with European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and coming away with a last-minute trade deal. He will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday. The Daily Beast has reached out to easyJet for comment. Solve the daily Crossword

At Least 3 Dead, Dozens More Injured After Train Derails — and Officials Now Wonder If Rain Played a Part in the Tragedy

Approximately 50 people were injured, with 25 sustaining serious injuries At least three people have died and multiple others are injured after a train carrying around 100 passengers derailed. According to reports from the Associated Press, the AFP and local outlet DW, a regional express train traveling in the German state of Baden-Wüerttemberg partially derailed in a forest area at around 6:10 p.m. local time on Sunday, July 27. The train was headed to Ulm, a German city, when the incident occurred in Riedlingen, a town of about 11,000 people, the outlets reported. Approximately 50 people were injured, with 25 sustaining serious injuries, per the outlets, which cited a regional district fire chief. In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for German train operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed "several fatalities and many injuries." The company added that the train carriages derailed "for reasons that are still unclear." Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, the representative told PEOPLE. "We therefore ask for your understanding that we cannot comment on further details at this time," the company spokesperson added. Storms passed through the area before the accident, and investigators are now looking into whether rain could have been a factor in the derailment. German media reported that a landslide stemming from the severe storms may have even caused the accident, the AFP reported. "There have been heavy rains here, so it cannot be ruled out that the heavy rain and a related landslide accident may have been the cause," Thomas Strobl, the interior minister of Baden- Württenberg, said, per the AP. "However, this is currently the subject of ongoing investigations." German media reported that helicopters arrived at the scene shortly after the accident to transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Florian Gebhard, the head of trauma surgery at Ulm University Hospital, where the injured were taken, told German state broadcaster SWR that many involved in the crash "were under shock," per DW. "The injuries [were] of varying severity. Most of them suffered injuries to their extremities, spinal injuries and head injuries," the hospital worker added. Photos taken at the scene of the accident show yellow and gray train cars lying on their sides as firefighters and emergency personnel work to remove passengers. Train service has been suspended for the line, Deutsche Bahn told PEOPLE. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz commented on the derailment in a post on X, writing that he was working with local officials to support rescue efforts. "The train accident in the Biberach district shocks me," Merz wrote in German. "I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister and have asked them to support the rescue forces with all available means." "We mourn the victims.
