Vinicius Júnior goal sends Brazil to 2026 World Cup, delighting fans in Ancelotti's home debut
The once prolific duo at Real Madrid helped Brazil to a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Sao Paulo. Ecuador secured its place at next year's global tournament later on Tuesday with a 0-0 draw at Peru.
Defending champions Argentina, held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia, had already qualified and are assured of finishing on top of South American qualifying.
Ecuador and Brazil each have 25 points in the standings, but the Ecuadorians are in second spot based on victories. The two nations are 10 points behind Argentina but, crucially, more than six points clear of the seventh-place team with two games remaining in the qualifying campaign.
The top six teams in South America earn direct entries to the 48-team World Cup.
Chile will miss a third consecutive World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia to remain last in 10-nation round-robin competition, a result that cost head coach Ricardo Gareca his job.
Uruguay beat Venezuela at home 2-0, with goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and edged closer to one of the direct spots with 24 points.
Venezuela, with 18, are one ahead of Bolivia in the contest for seventh place that grants an intercontinental playoff berth.
Lionel Messi had a quiet night in Argentina's draw with Colombia in Buenos Aires. Luis Díaz opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute. Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the 70th minute to the disappointment of more than 80,000 fans at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium.
But Julián Alvarez scored the equalizer in the 81st with a low, crossed shot.
Madrid-Sao Paulo
Ancelotti received some frustration from fans after Thursday's 0-0 draw with Ecuador, as his team focused on defending the entire match. The Italian coach, who turned 66 Tuesday, promised changes to make his team more aggressive at the NeoQuimica Arena.
He was welcomed by 46,000 fans, including NBA star Gianni Antetokounmpo, who displayed a tifo in yellow and green that read 'Parabens, Carleto' (Happy birthday, Carleto in Portuguese).
Gabriel Martinelli replaced midfielder Gerson and was one of the best players of the encounter. Raphinha returned after suspension and created many problems for Paraguay's defense. And Vinicius Júnior was often seen as a targetman, sharing the duties with Matheus Cunha.
A mistake by Paraguay's defense, a low cross by Cunha and a gentle touch by Brazil's new No. 10 produced the only goal of the match. 'It is for you,' the striker told the coach as he celebrated.
Despite the low score, the hosts were much more aggressive than in most of its games in this World Cup qualifying campaign.
'We needed to win here for our people. Now we have more time to work, see what we can improve,' Vinicius said after the match. He won't play Brazil's next game in qualifying against Chile due to suspension. 'We need to celebrate this. After September it is all about the World Cup.'
After the final whistle, a clip of Ancelotti's first days on the job was shown in big screens around the stadium. A raucous celebration erupted again, as if the Italian coach had brought new life to a team that only three months ago appeared lost and doomed.
He said the team was balanced despite having four strikers. He also said that Cunha's role, as a playmaker, is the one he figures will be Neymar's if the veteran fully recovers his fitness.
'It's no problem to play with three or four up front. We need 10 players to run, to sacrifice,' Ancelotti said. 'Rodrygo did this many times, I know him well. And Neymar will also do it.'
Golden generation gone
Chile's golden generation won two Copa America titles — in 2015 and '16 — but are out of contention for next year's expanded 48-team tournament.
'Sad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,' veteran Chile striker Alexis Sánchez said. 'We have to keep working. There's change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left.' Bolivia scored first via Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz.
Gareca, the 67-year-old Argentinian coach who took Peru to the 2018 World Cup, told a post-game news conference he was leaving the team after a 17-match stretch that included four wins, four draws and nine losses.
Final rounds The South American qualifying tournament will finish in September. Uruguay and Paraguay each need one point to secure their direct spots. The Uruguayans will face Peru and Chile. The Paraguayans will take on Ecuador and Peru.
Colombia, in sixth place with 22 points, will play for its World Cup future against Bolivia and Venezuela. Bolivia will seek its first chance to play at the World Cup since 1994 against the Colombians and then Brazil. Venezuela's rivals will be Argentina and Colombia.

But when Maresca was asked to name the football personality he would most like to one of his favourite Portagas No 2 cigars with, the Italian gave a poignant answer - Antonio Puerta, who died aged 22 after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field. Maresca told Men in Blazers: 'That's a very good question. I will tell you, when I was 25, 26, I lost a team-mate inside the pitch. So if I could, I would like a cigar with him.' Midfielder Maresca had four seasons at Sevilla but his third campaign started in tragic fashion. Advertisement The Italian was on the field when, just 35 minutes into the opening game of the 2007/8 season - at home against Getafe - Puerta suffered a cardiac arrest. After the wing-back collapsed and lost consciousness in the penalty area, team-mates and medical staff rushed to his aid. Puerta recovered enough to walk to the dressing room but collapsed again there. He was resuscitated and rushed to hospital, where he had to receive more life-saving resuscitation. When Puerta passed away, Maresca and the rest of the Seville squad were already in Greece for a Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens. Advertisement Maresca, who played for Greek side Olympiakos later in his career, spoke about the tragedy when Chelsea went to Athens in October 2024 for a Conference League game against Panathinaikos. Maresca said: 'In terms of the season I spent here in Greece, for me it was very good with Olympiakos, a big rival with Panathinaikos. But unfortunately I lost a friend on the pitch when I was at Seville. 'The first game we played after that, we were already in Athens and just on that day, one of our team-mates passed away in Antonio Puerta. 'So it is a mixed feeling. The season in Athens was fantastic. But every time I come back here I am a little bit sad.' Advertisement The Champions League game against AEK, which had been scheduled for the evening of the day Puerta died, was postponed. When Sevilla faced AC Milan in the Uefa Super Cup on August 31, all 22 players had the name Puerta on the back of their shirts. Sergio Ramos, who had come through the Sevilla academy and into the first team with Puerta, wore T-shirts in memory of Puerta after Spain's triumphs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. Jesus Navas, who was on the field on the day Puerta collapse, made the same gesture after the 2010 World Cup final. Women's Rugby World Cup to adopt flashing mouthguards to signal head impact
MOUTHGUARDS THAT LIGHT up to indicate a player has suffered a significant head impact will be used at the Women's Rugby World Cup. Mouthguards will flash red if the impact is severe enough to potentially cause a concussion. The referee will then stop play and the player will leave the field for a head injury assessment. The aim is to introduce the system into all top-flight rugby. Dr Eanna Falvey, the chief medical officer at World Rugby, said every player at the Women's World Cup, which starts on 22 August, will wear the mouthguards, apart from two who wear braces. He added that in the men's game around 85% of players wear so-called 'smart mouthguards', which are not compulsory. The mouthguards measure how much a player's head moves and rotates in a collision. When it registers an acceleration above a set limit, it will flash. Advertisement World Rugby data indicates that while concussion rates are similar in women's and men's rugby, 'head acceleration' events are significantly less likely for female players. World Rugby brought in the 'instrumented mouthguard' at the women's international tournament in 2023 before introducing it globally the following year. Scotland hooker George Turner was the first elite male player to be taken off for a head injury assessment after his gumshield detected a potentially worrying head impact in a match against France in last year's Six Nations. Dr Lindsay Starling, World Rugby's science and medical manager, speaking alongside Falvey at a Twickenham press conference on Monday, said the aim was to help players rather than merely accumulate information. 'The data set that has grown over the last year is huge,' he said. 'So now it's actually making sure that it doesn't just become a data collection exercise but we actually understand what that data means and then start putting things in place for players such that they are actually benefiting from the data that's being collected.' Starling added mouthguards could help identify foul play, although she warned: 'What everybody needs to understand that, in the same way, a player can get concussed from a pretty small head impact, foul play (can take place) without registering anything substantial.' Head injuries have become an issue in rugby union as the game has become increasingly physical in the professional era. A group of nearly 300 former players launched legal action over brain injuries in December 2023. The players allege World Rugby, the Welsh Rugby Union and England's Rugby Football Union failed to establish reasonable measures to protect their health and safety. Injuries from head blows are said to have caused other disorders including motor neurone disease, epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. Cristiano proposes to Georgina... with ring the size of a golf ball
Cristiano Ronaldo is officially set to tie the knot after proposing to his other half, Georgina Rodriguez, with a monstrosity of a ring. The couple have been dating since 2016 when they met at a Gucci store where Georgina worked as a sales assistant. The pair are raising six children together. In 2022, the pair tragically lost their baby boy as they were expecting twins with them saying at the time that 'only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness'. Ronaldo was reportedly looking at schools for his children in England. Pic: Instagram/georginagio Taking to social media on Monday, Georgina announced that her husband, arguably the most famous footballer in the world, had popped the question. Dropping a photo of a ring that is quite literally the size of a rock, Georgina wrote: 'Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.' Georgina and Cristiano have been dating since last year. Pic: Instagram/georginagio Georgina began her career as a professional dancer and model, and now also works as a social media influencer boasting almost 70 million Instagram followers. Cristiano recently signed a new contract with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia and is seemingly set to continue playing beyond the World Cup next year.
