Greek Yogurt vs Regular Yogurt: What is the difference

Yogurt has been a part of human diets for centuries, valued for its probiotic benefits and creamy taste. Today, two popular types—Greek yogurt and regular yogurt—often leave people confused about which one is healthier or better suited for their needs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While both are made from milk and live cultures, their preparation, texture, and nutrition differ in key ways. Difference in Preparation The main distinction lies in the straining process. Regular yogurt is made by fermenting milk with beneficial bacteria until it thickens. Greek yogurt, however, undergoes additional straining to remove much of the liquid whey. This gives it a thicker and creamier texture, setting it apart from the smoother consistency of regular yogurt. Yogurt and Greek yogurt both offer probiotics and health benefits, but Greek yogurt boasts more protein and less sugar, while regular yogurt has higher calcium. Protein Content One of the biggest differences is the protein concentration. Greek yogurt contains nearly double the protein of regular yogurt due to the straining process, which reduces water and concentrates nutrients. This makes it particularly beneficial for people looking to build muscle, feel full longer, or manage weight through higher satiety. Carbohydrates and Lactose Regular yogurt usually has more carbohydrates and lactose than Greek yogurt. Since straining removes a portion of the milk sugar, Greek yogurt becomes a better choice for those who are lactose sensitive or monitoring carb intake. On the other hand, regular yogurt may be easier for people who prefer a lighter option with natural sweetness. Calcium and Nutrients While Greek yogurt is rich in protein, straining reduces some of its calcium content compared to regular yogurt. Regular yogurt, therefore, provides a slightly higher dose of calcium and certain water-soluble vitamins, making it beneficial for bone health. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Choosing between them depends on whether you prioritize protein or calcium in your diet. Taste and Uses Greek yogurt has a tangier flavor and thicker texture, which makes it suitable for dips, smoothies, or as a substitute for sour cream. Regular yogurt is milder and lighter, often enjoyed as a refreshing snack or paired with fruits and cereals. Ultimately, both offer unique benefits, and the choice depends on personal health goals and taste preferences.

From Army to Navy to Air Force: Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, DG AFMS reveals what she learnt from each service

Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DG AFMS) has the rare distinction of serving in all three branches of the Indian armed forces. At She Shakti 2025, the spotlight is on women who are leading from the frontlines. In an inspiring segment, Firstpost's Managing Editor Palki Sharma, spoke to Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DG AFMS), about her path to a historic leadership position. Surgeon VAdm Sarin has a rare distinction to her name: she has served in all three branches of the Indian armed forces. She served as a lieutenant to captain in the Indian Army, from surgeon lieutenant to surgeon vice admiral in the Indian Navy, and was an air marshal in the Indian Air Force as well. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The flag officer, who also has the distinction of being the first woman to be appointed as DG AFMS, spoke about the lessons in leadership from her time in each service. 'I started in the Army very young. But I think the Armed Forces confer leadership on their officers very early. Of course you have a small medical inspection room that you take care of. That starts your path to looking after a place both administratively and also looking after patients. So, I learnt a little bit of that kind of leadership there, and then I moved on,' she said. Surgeon VAdm Sarin, who spent 36 years in the Navy as part of the AFMS, spoke about how postings in remote locations taught her how to survive with less resources and how to communicate, among other things. She went on to say, 'I moved into the Command Hospital in Pune. The good thing about AFMS is that since it is a tri-services organisation, we move smoothly between Army, Navy, and Air Force. I've served in Army hospitals in naval uniform for 12 years.' Although the flag officer served only a short time in the Indian Air Force, she learnt key lessons there. 'I learnt a lot from the aviators[…]Learnt to be very precise, very quick, very professional,' she said.
