World Snooker Championship winner blew millionaire status despite £500,000 payday
Luca Brecel became one of the most surprising World Snooker Championship winners of all time and was a millionaire, but spent his money on fast cars

As Zhao Xintong celebrates his World Snooker Championship final victory over Mark Williams, he will do well to learn lessons from Luca Brecel's celebrations. The latter became a millionaire when he won the World Snooker Championship, but spent his seven-figure status away just as quickly.
In 2023, Brecel shocked the sporting world by beating Mark Selby 18-15 at the Crucible to win his first world championship. The Belgian became the first ever player from continental Europe to become a world champion. Brecel looked to be threatening another run to the final this year, but he was stopped by Judd Trump in the quarter-finals.

When Brecel emerged from the Crucible victorious two years ago, he left with a hefty £500,000 prize. However, the Belgian Bullet chose to enjoy his winnings while he could and splashed out on three stunning cars. By the end of his shopping spree, which was reportedly worth around £440,000, he found that his status as a millionaire was over.

Last year, before his World Snooker Championship defence, he admitted: "I bought two more cars this week, so I went from a millionaire to a non-millionaire."
It's understood that he spent more than £250,000 on a high-speed Ferrari 488, £80,000 on a Range Rover, and a Porsche Taycan GT believed to be worth around £111,000 for his girlfriend, Laura Vanoverberghe.
The humorous thing about his purchases is that he is rarely behind the wheel. In a past interview with the Sun, he admitted: "I got a couple of cars with my winnings. I got a Ferrari and a couple of others. Just to enjoy myself. I don't really drive it that often. I'm not really home that much."

Brecel would have pocketed around £50,000 for reaching the last eight at the Crucible this year - a hefty prize but only 10 per cent of his winnings from 2023. The Belgian was determined to make a splash at the competition this year, after two years of inconsistent form.
He immediately made headlines by arriving at the Crucible via an audacious private jet, which he offered to allow other people on social media to join him in. His spending has previously attracted the criticism of other snooker legends such as Stephen Hendry.

Before the competition, the snooker great said: "I honestly don't know what he's (Brecel) doing with his career. I haven't got a clue. I see him a lot on Instagram, he's riding his bike all over the place, he's going out to dinners with his girlfriend, he seems to be having a lovely time."
Brecel's laid-back and relaxed demeanour has often led to many people questioning his motivation and desire to win more major titles. However, he insists he is happy with a simple life. He added: "To be honest, I live quite a simple life, apart from the cars maybe.

"I just love being at home when I have the chance to be at home. Walk the dog, watch a bit of television, play a few games. A pretty basic life, to be honest. It may not look like that, but it is."

Ferrari Has Two New Special Supercars On The Way

Two New Trademarks Point To Special-Edition Ferraris Ferrari isn't known for imaginative model names. Typically, a new Ferrari car comes with wordsoup as a description (see 296 GTB, F80, F12berlinetta, et cetera), but the saving grace of these seemingly jumbled letters and numbers is that they hold meaning, albeit often tenuous. With that in mind, we have a task to accomplish: deciphering the meanings behind two new trademarks Ferrari has filed in Italy. 0:02 / 0:09 2025 Ford Maverick: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More The names are SC40 and CZ26, and although all we have to go on are those eight characters, the fact that Ferrari names are never random should act as a guiding light. CZ26 Sounds Very Specific Both trademark applications include a request for use on cars, though whether the CZ26 or SC40 names are for limited-production or one-off vehicles remains to be seen. The Ferrari J50, for example, was a 10-unit special edition made to celebrate 50 years of Ferrari in Japan. Using that logic, 'CZ' could refer to the Czech Republic, but Ferrari celebrated 25 years in the country in 2023, so we doubt the name refers to a limited run of 26 vehicles, or as a celebration of anything Ferrari-related in the country 25 years ago. Especially since the trademark was applied for in Italy. Instead, it seems more likely that the letters refer to an individual buyer (if you know of any multi-millionaires with suitable initials, please get in touch). The digits could refer either to the production run or the year in which it will be revealed, or they could simply refer to the commissioning buyer's birthdate; anything is possible. Alternatively, maybe the number refers to the Ferrari 250 LM that won the 1966 Paris 1000 Km. This was wearing #26, and so have various past and present Ferrari entrants to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. SC40 Could Be Much More Interesting The second trademark is for SC40, and that instantly sounds intriguing. Not only does it immediately call to mind the Ferrari F40, but S and C are numbers that have far more potential applications. Words like scuderia and corsa jump to mind, but again, anything could happen. Still, we'd like to pursue the theory of an F40 tribute. Scuderia Ferrari Formula One driver Sir Lewis Hamilton has expressed an interest in reinventing the F40 for the modern age, though the name F44 has been floated for this potential project. The Ferrari F40 was launched almost 40 years ago, in 1987, and we doubt Ferrari would launch a tribute as important as that without the timing being perfect. 1985 was the year of the 3.2 Mondial variants, the 328 variants, and the 442 Gran Turismo, so we can't see much inspiration from that era. Ferrari didn't even exist in 1940, so there are no clues there either. Perhaps here, the numbers refer to displacement, right? Well, with Ferrari moving away from V8s in favor of V6s, and its V12 displacing some 6.5 liters, we still don't have an answer. We'll just have to wait and see what Ferrari has planned. Until then, let's argue in the comments. Source: Ferrari About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile

Hearts officials are working to finalise at least two more new signings before the first-team squad report to Riccarton for pre-season training. With players due back on 20 June, moves are afoot to recruit another striker and a centre-back. Four players have already agreed deals at Tynecastle Park ahead of the new season - Norwegian right-back Christian Borchgrevink, Greek winger Alexanderos Kyziridis, Belgian striker Elton Kabangu and Irish midfielder Oisin McEntee. The Edinburgh News can reveal detailed talks have taken place between Hearts and the Oxford United defender Stuart Findlay. A Scotland international centre-back, Findlay played on loan at Kilmarnock for the last two seasons under Derek McInnes - who has since taken charge in Gorgie and wants the player with him. All parties are willing for the move to happen, although negotiations are still ongoing. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Findlay, 29, made 23 appearances for Kilmarnock last season despite being sidelined for five months with an ankle injury. He is a left-footed central defender previously on the books at Celtic, Newcastle United and Philadelphia Union. Capped by Scotland in 2019, he is a player McInnes knows and trusts. Finances for the deal are still being discussed and talks have been encouraging so far. A six-figure transfer fee is required to release Findlay from his Oxford contract, which runs until summer 2026. Hearts are also progressing towards a deal for the Portuguese striker Claudio Braga. He will cost in excess of £400,000 from the Norwegian second-tier side Aalesund FK. A 25-year-old strong and mobile striker, Braga's contract in Norway runs until December 2026. He is seen as a versatile forward who would bring different attributes to the Tynecastle attack next season. Lawrence Shankland's Hearts future and West Brom transfer interest Aalesund are eight games into their 2025 league campaign and are reluctant to lose Braga right now. Hearts want him as soon as possible to integrate him into McInnes' new-look squad for season 2025/26. The Edinburgh News revealed last month that a new striker was one of the club's priorities during the summer transfer window. That remains the case regardless of where captain Lawrence Shankland's future lies. The Scotland internationalist was on honeymoon recently after marrying his long-term fiancé, Nicole, and is due to decide his next move. His Hearts contract expires this week and English clubs West Bromwich Albion and Southampton are interested in taking him south of the border. The terms they can offer exceed the deal Hearts put to Shankland last month and the player must now make a final decision on whether he will leave Edinburgh. He was also monitored by Rangers last season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Another Tynecastle transfer target is Daniel Arzani, the Australian international winger who is out of contract and pondering whether to leave Melbourne Victory. He has interest from Hearts, plus other clubs in Europe, Asia and Australia. He intends to take time over his next career move having previously experienced British football at Manchester City and Celtic. Talks regarding a quick summer transfer for the Kazakhstan international winger Islam Chesnokov are still ongoing. Hearts are hopeful he will be their player in the near future as they want to avoid a pre-contract agreement for him to arrive in November - and be unable to register until January. In addition to the incomings above, there will be several players leaving Hearts in the weeks to come. Winger Barrie McKay and midfielder Jorge Grant left when their contracts expired at the end of the season. Others will be moved on to trim the size of the first-team pool at Riccarton.

Maya Jama unveils major change to Love Island just before launch

Love Island returns later tonight with its new series and host Maya Jama has teased what to expect from her fashion choices throughout the ITV2 show this summer Host Maya Jama has teased over her wardrobe for the latest series of Love Island, which launches later tonight. The presenter returns to front the reality TV show as a dozen islanders enter the villa abroad for the first time. Maya, 30, has been met with praise over outfits that she's modelled hosting the ITV2 show in the past, with her fashion choices often complimented by fans. She has now teased what to expect from her wardrobe for the new series. ‌ The presenter will join the original twelve islanders in the villa in Majorca on tonight's launch episode as they get coupled-up for the first time and then return on occasion throughout the series. She's teased that viewers can expect to see her in vintage-inspired designer looks. ‌ She's said to have showcased one example on a yacht last night as she made a "showstopping" entrance ahead of entering the villa itself. The "preloved" outfit consisted of a Versace one-piece swimsuit and sarong. Maya told the Sun: "We're doing all archive, vintage, Nineties runway inspired." The presenter, who has hosted Love Island since 2023, having taken over from Laura Whitmore, went on to say they are all from "hidden archives". She continued: "The designers have been hunting them down for the last few months for me. Everything should have a runway reference." She suggested to the outlet that her wardrobe for the new series will be "very vintage". Maya then teased that she has chosen fashion options that she can't "rip" or "ruin" during production of the reality TV show. She explained that that is because the vintage outfits have to "go back" after the host has worn them. She shared photos of herself modelling the swimsuit on board the yacht on Instagram yesterday and wrote in the caption: "Having fun with it .. Love Island starts tomorrow at 9pm." Maya later added: "Wearing full archive Versace." ‌ Tonight's launch episode will introduce the first twelve islanders to viewers. It's been announced that the process of them coupling-up for the first time will be "slightly different" this year, with Maya revealing the details to the girls, prior to the arrival of the first six boys taking part this series. After getting the six of them to share their respective types with her, the presenter tells them: "This year things are slightly different. You've told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality?" ‌ As they line up, Maya announces: "Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?" Once they have looked at the profiles and discussed them as a group, they are given just seconds to make a decision on who to couple up with first. ITV has teased that they must run to a heart but only one girl is allowed at each one. Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
