Kiwis player Brandon Smith questioned by QLD police at airport
South Sydney have spoken with the NRL Integrity Unit after star signing Brandon Smith was interviewed by police on arrival at Gold Coast airport on Saturday. The 29-year-old was released without charge to take his place in the Rabbitohs side against the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon at Robina in what will be his 150th NRL game. AAP spoke to club chief executive Blake Solly at the ground before kick-off. While no details have emerged on why exactly Smith was spoken to by police, it is understood there was no issue with the 2020 premiership winner, who was permitted to join the team at their hotel and prepare to play in the match. The Rabbitohs have also informed the NRL, which had no problem with him playing. ADVERTISEMENT The Titans worked with stadium staff to ensure Smith was not bounced by camera crews on his arrival with the side on the team bus hours before kick-off. Queensland Police issued a statement confirming they had spoken with Smith: "Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport. The male was later released without charge. Police have no further information to provide." It is also understood Smith was not involved in any behaviour on the plane that was untoward. Smith joined the Rabbitohs mid-season after securing a release from the Sydney Roosters. His return to play was curtailed until he had fully recovered from an ACL injury suffered last year. In his first game for the Rabbitohs in round 18 he sustained another knee injury, an MCL sprain. Sunday's clash is just his second for the club after previously lining up in 107 games for Melbourne and 41 for the Roosters.
