After 17 years, another round of confrontation between Akal Takht & Patna sahib clergy

Time of India23-05-2025
Jalandhar: It is after around 17 years that the clergy of Takht Patna Sahib is coming into direct conflict with the Akal Takht jathedar and other Punjab-based Sikh high priests. When on Wednesday, the Takht Patna Sahib jathedar and four other granthis suddenly declared the Akal Takht acting jathedar and Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar "tankhaiya" (guilty of religious misconduct), it was reminiscent of Takht Patna Sahib jathedar, in 2008, declaring Akal Takht jathedar and other Sikh high priests "mahan doshi" (big guilty).
That was a protracted phase of confrontation that embarrassed the community and history appears repeating itself once again.
Then, Takht Patna Sahib jathedar Iqbal Singh, on Jan 26, 2008, issued an edict in which he challenged the supremacy of Akal Takht, a concept widely accepted by the Sikhs, and claimed that Takht Patna Sahib was supreme. He also excommunicated Takht Patna Sahib managing committee president Mohinder Singh Romana, but that edict was nullified by the Akal Takht.
The clergy claimed that the right of excommunication was only with the Akal Takht.
He was not allowed to participate in the meetings of the Sikh high priests at the Akal Takht after 2007. He came on his own on June 6, 2008, to participate in a meeting but was not allowed. Four days later, on June 10, 2008, he shocked the community by pronouncing four Singh Sahibans (high priests) — then Akal Takht jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti; then Darbar Sahib head granthi Gurbachan Singh, who later became Akal Takht jathedar; then Kesgarh Sahib jathedar Tarlochan Singh; and then Damdama Sahib jathedar Balwant Singh Nandgarh and Giani Jagtar Singh, who later became head granthi of Darbar Sahib – "mahan doshi".

These high priests rejected an earlier edict issued by him on May 10, 2008, declaring former Akal Takht jathedar Prof Darshan Singh "pucca tankhaiya" (almost excommunicated). He even equated the rejection of his edict (on which he got signatures of four other priests of Takht Patna Sahib) with turning away from Guru Gobind Singh and claimed that the Singh Sahibans did this under a deep conspiracy.
A couple of months later, Vedanti was relieved of his charge in the first week of Aug 2008, which was also a sudden development.
Iqbal not only attended the installation of Giani Gurbachan Singh and offered him a turban on Aug 7, 2008. The latter also started inviting him to the meetings of the Singh Sahibans, and this became an affair as if nothing had happened in the past. Neither Gurbachan Singh nor Iqbal Singh ever clarified what happened to the big conceptual contradictions.
Iqbal Singh had no qualms about sitting with the same persons he had declared "mahan doshi".
Together they rather issued a few controversial edicts, including unilateral pardon to Sirsa dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in Sept 2015.
In Aug 2010, Iqbal Singh once again created controversy by issuing two edicts – one of which appeared to challenge the supremacy of Akal Takht. In the edict issued on Aug 18, written and signed in Hindi, it was announced that only the five Singh Sahibans of Patna Sahib were authorised to decide religious and social issues pertaining to Sikhism.
Then Akal Takht jathedar Gurbachan Singh said that the issues would be discussed at the Akal Takht in a meeting of the high priests and an explanation would be sought from Iqbal Singh. However, instead of clearing the air or giving any cogent explanations, controversies were given a quiet burial, reflecting that things were happening in a whimsical manner.
Iqbal Singh's tenure remained marred by controversies, and he gave a tough time to the management committee of the Takht Patna Sahib and to the Sikh priests later also. Several in the community found his edicts whimsical. On April 8, Akal Takht barred him from participating in any religious function following quite a few complaints about him.

Slapped, punched and bitten: The horrific assault of a 15-month-old inside a Noida daycare centre

A 15-month-old girl was brutally assaulted by a nanny at a Noida daycare, with the incident caught on CCTV. The daycare owner allegedly did nothing to intervene. Police have arrested the nanny read more The parents also allege that despite their daughter's cries, the daycare owner, Charu, made no attempt to help or protect her. Image for Representation A 15-month-old girl was brutally assaulted by a nanny at a daycare in Noida's Sector 137, in an incident that has left parents across the city horrified and questioning the safety of childcare facilities. The assault, which was caught on CCTV, shows the toddler being slapped, bitten, dropped to the ground twice or thrice, and beaten with a plastic bat. Shockingly, the daycare owner was allegedly present but did nothing to intervene. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's what happened The shocking assault at Noida daycare Monica and Sandeep Kumar, parents of the 15-month-old girl, had been sending their daughter to the daycare in Sector 137 since May 21. Sandeep, who works in the IT department of a UK-based multinational company, had made sure to check the safety arrangements himself before enrolling her, including confirming that five CCTV cameras were installed across the premises. The daycare, run by the residents' association, is one of many such facilities operating in residential complexes across Delhi NCR. Charu, the daycare's owner, personally assured the couple of their child's safety. 'Before sending our daughter, we had checked all safety measures at the daycare. There were five CCTV cameras in all rooms, the hall, and kitchen areas. The owner assured us during admission that it's the daycare's responsibility to keep every child safe,' Sandeep told The Times of India. But on Monday, when Monica went to pick up her daughter, something felt wrong. The toddler was crying uncontrollably and seemed unusually distressed. Later, while changing her clothes, Monica spotted circular marks on both of her thighs. 'My wife asked the teachers about the bite marks, but was told she had some infection from home. She ran to a doctor immediately. The doctor confirmed it wasn't an infection, but marks of human teeth. He also told my wife that it appeared our daughter had been tortured because she was visibly scared. My wife came home and informed me. I left office without any delay,' Sandeep recalled. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When they confronted the daycare owner, she flatly denied that any abuse had occurred. The couple requested CCTV footage to verify what had happened, but getting access proved to be an uphill battle. According to The Times of India, the staff claimed there were 'technical issues,' missing applications, and even snapped wires that delayed them from handing over the footage. The parents say the daycare kept stalling for four days until police intervened on Thursday. When the couple finally saw the recordings, they were horrified. The footage showed the attendant, Sonali, a teenager from Shahdara village, mercilessly punching the child, pushing her off a swing, dropping her onto the floor, beating her with a plastic bat, and even inserting a pencil into her mouth. A horrific video from a daycare in Noida has surfaced, showing a woman worker hitting and biting a 15-month-old toddler. A case against her was registered, and she was arrested. — Vani Mehrotra (@vani_mehrotra) August 11, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The parents also allege that despite their daughter's cries, the daycare head, Charu, made no attempt to help or protect her. Instead, they claim both the maid and the owner hurled abusive language and issued threats when confronted. What's next? Following the parents' complaint, police from Noida's Sector-142 station registered a case, conducted a medical examination of the toddler, and arrested the accused maid. Charges have been filed under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following the parents' complaint, police from Noida's Sector-142 station registered a case, conducted a medical examination of the toddler, and arrested the accused maid. File image/PTI In a disturbing twist, Sandeep told NDTV that another family in the same residential complex has now come forward, claiming their child also suffered abuse at the daycare. They, too, plan to file a police complaint. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I want action against the daycare owner and the attendant so that such an incident does not happen with another child. These were very tough days. I could not go to work. My wife could not sleep,' Sandeep said, describing the emotional toll of the ordeal. With input from agencies

Nvidia, AMD agree to pay 15% of Chinese AI chip revenues to US for export licenses

(Bloomberg) -- Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. agreed to pay 15% of their revenues from Chinese AI chip sales to the US government in a deal to secure export licenses, an unusual arrangement that may unnerve both US companies and Beijing. Nvidia plans to share 15% of the revenue from sales of its H20 AI accelerator in China, according to a person familiar with the matter. AMD will deliver the same share from MI308 revenues, the person added, asking for anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The arrangement reflects US President Donald Trump's consistent effort to engineer a financial payout for America in return for concessions on trade. His administration has shown a willingness to relax trade conditions like tariffs in return for giant investment in the US — as with Apple Inc.'s pledge to spend $600 billion on domestic manufacturing. But such a narrow, select export tax has little precedent in modern corporate history. Beijing, which has grown increasingly hostile to the idea of Chinese firms deploying the H20, is unlikely to warm to the idea of a chip tax. Yuyuantantian, a social media account affiliated with state-run China Central Television that regularly signals Beijing's thinking about trade, on Sunday slammed the chip's supposed security vulnerabilities and inefficiency. 'This seeming quid pro quo is unprecedented from an export control perspective. The arrangement risks invalidating the national security rationale for U.S. export controls,' said Jacob Feldgoise, a researcher at the DC-based Center for Security and Emerging Technology. It 'will likely undermine the US' position when negotiating with allies to implement complementary controls,' he added. 'Allies may not believe U.S. policymakers if they are willing to trade away those same national security concerns for economic concessions — either from U.S. companies or foreign governments.' An Nvidia spokesperson said the company follows US export rules, adding that while it hasn't shipped H20 chips to China for months, it hopes the rules will allow US companies to compete in China. AMD didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The Financial Times earlier reported the development. It followed a separate report from the same outlet that the Commerce Department had begun issuing H20 licenses last week, days after Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang met with Trump. Huang has lobbied long and hard for the lifting of restrictions, arguing that walling China off will only slow the spread of American technology and encourage local rivals such as Huawei Technologies Co. 'It's a strategic bargaining chip' that tightens Washington's grip on a critical tech sphere during trade negotiations with China, said Hebe Chen, an analyst with Vantage Markets in Melbourne. 'Over time, this hurdle for chips entering China will likely deter Nvidia and AMD from deeper expansion in the world's largest chip-importing market, while giving local Chinese producers a clear edge to capture market share and accelerate domestic semiconductor innovation.' If Washington goes ahead with the tax, it should funnel some capital to the US — but not an enormous amount in relative terms. Both Nvidia and AMD have said it'll take time to ramp back up production of their China-specific products — even if order levels return to previous levels, which is uncertain. Nvidia raked in $4.6 billion of revenue from the H20 in the fiscal quarter ended April 27 — days after new restrictions on shipping the AI accelerator to China were imposed. It also said it had been unable to ship $2.5 billion of H20 China revenue in that period because of the new rules. That implies it would have got more than $7 billion in H20 sales to China during the period. If it can return to that level, the US government will stand to get about a billion dollars a quarter from its deal. AMD could generate $3 billion to $5 billion of 2025 revenue if restrictions were lifted, Morgan Stanley estimates. Chinese alternatives such as Huawei's Ascend chips now account for 20% to 30% of domestic demand, it reckoned. 'The US government clearly needs the money given its deficits and eagerness to collect tariffs,' said Vey-Sern Ling, managing director at Union Bancaire Privee in Singapore. 'But the complication is China's accusations about H20 chips containing backdoors, which could be a negotiation tactic to highlight that the country is not 'hard up' for US chips.'
