Russia aims to boost grains, vegoil exports to Iran
MOSCOW: Russia aims to boost grains and vegetable oil exports to Iran through the Caspian Sea in the coming months, thanks to an anticipated larger harvest this year and an end to trading restrictions, market analysts and traders said on Tuesday.
Trade between Russia and Iran, both heavily sanctioned by the West, grew by 16% to $4.8 billion last year. It primarily goes through the inland Caspian Sea, whose coastline is shared by Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.
'There is potential to increase our supplies of corn, barley, and sunflower oil to the Iranian market,' said Andrei Kucherov, head of agriculture at Reksoft, a consulting firm, partly owned by billionaire Vladimir Potanin's Interros holding. Igor Pavensky, chief analyst at rail carrier Rusagrotrans, said Iran could triple Russian wheat imports to 3-4 million tons in the coming season and boost corn and barley imports to 3.6 million tons from 2.6 million. Iran is the largest buyer of Russian corn and the second-largest buyer of Russian barley. After a pause due to a good harvest last year, Iran resumed wheat purchases from Russia in March, becoming the third-largest buyer in May.
'We are expecting a record sunflower seeds harvest this year. Corn, as well as barley and wheat, are in a good shape. So we have all the possibilities there (to increase supplies to Iran),' said Dmitry Rylko, head of IKAR consultancy.
Russian traders said Iran explored the pricing and availability of corn and barley from Russia over recent days. Afghanistan is also in talks with Russia to import certain foodstuffs, a minister told Reuters recently.
Russia is expecting to harvest 135 million tons of grain this year, including 90 million tons of wheat, compared with 130 million tons of grain and 83 million tons of wheat in 2024. Iran's harvest is expected to be lower this year due to drought.

SINGAPORE: Oil prices headed for their steepest weekly decline since March 2023 on Friday, as the absence of significant supply disruption from the Iran-Israel conflict saw any risk premium evaporate. Brent crude futures rose 35 cents, or 0.52%, to $68.08 a barrel by 0429 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 40 cents, or 0.61%, to $65.64. 'Absent the threat of significant supply disruption, we still view oil as fundamentally oversupplied, with our 2025 balances indicating a roughly 2.1 million barrels per day (bpd) surplus,' Macquarie analysts wrote in a research note on Thursday. Oil climbs as investors shift focus to demand signals The analysts forecast WTI to average around $67 a barrel this year and $60 next year, raising each forecast by $2 after factoring in a geopolitical risk premium. Small gains in prices later in the week came as U.S. government data showed crude oil and fuel inventories fell a week earlier, with refining activity and demand rising. 'The market is starting to digest the fact that crude oil inventories are very tight all of a sudden,' said Phil Flynn, senior analyst with the Price Futures Group. Also supporting prices was a Wall Street Journal report saying Trump planned to choose the next Federal Reserve chief earlier than usual. That fuelled fresh bets on U.S. interest rate cuts which would typically stimulate demand for oil.

Economic team lauded for 'balanced budget'

"The Iranian leadership specifically named the President of Pakistan — himself, and the Field Marshal — for their contribution to the ceasefire efforts", the prime minister said. As regards the attack by Iran on Qatar, the prime minister said Pakistan had also issued a condemnation statement, reiterating Pakistan's strong ties with the brotherly nation. Regarding Muharram ul Haram, Shehbaz Sharif directed the concerned authorities to ensure strict law and order during processions and majalis across the country. He also instructed the interior minister to coordinate with provincial governments, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to maintain peace and security during the month.

JI for early completion of IP gas pipeline project
LAHORE: Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has demanded of the government to immediately resume work on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project and ensure its completion without further delay. Addressing a press conference at Mansoora on Thursday, he highlighted the shifting regional dynamics in the wake of the Iran-Israel war. He noted that India refrained from supporting Tehran, while Pakistan maintained a principled position. 'The time has come for Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Türkiye to form a regional defense alliance,' he urged, adding that this bloc should also include China and Russia to counter unilateral US hegemony and establish a powerful global front. The JI leader called for investigations into massive financial irregularities uncovered in Punjab government's audit reports and criticized the controversial cycle of sugar exports followed by imports. He said Sharif family is launching schemes only for personal publicity at the expense of public tax money. 'The uncle-niece duo continues to deceive the nation in the name of progress,' he said. Rehman demanded reduction in the interest rate this year, with complete elimination next year. He urged that electricity tariffs be rationalized based on actual production costs and called for transparency regarding progress on dismantling exploitative IPP agreements. 'This nomination must be withdrawn immediately,' he asserted. Reaffirming JI's position on Kashmir, he said, 'There can be no talks with India - with or without Trump's mediation - without the right to self-determination for Kashmiris.'
