Mariners' Josh Naylor destroys Athletics pitch for first HR since trade

The post Mariners' Josh Naylor destroys Athletics pitch for first HR since trade appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The Seattle Mariners got the spark they were looking for Monday night, and it came off the bat of their newest slugger. In the bottom of the fourth inning at Sutter Health Park, Josh Naylor crushed a 420-foot solo shot to right field off Athletics starter Joey Estes, marking his first home run since being traded to the Seattle last week. The blast gave the Mariners an early 1-0 lead in a divisional matchup they couldn't afford to lose.
Naylor's longball not only energized the dugout but also electrified the fanbase. After the homer, the Mariners took to their official X (formerly known as Twitter) page to share the celebratory moment as Naylor lifted the team's signature trident for the first time.
'Josh Naylor earns the 🔱 for the first time! #TridentsUp'
Traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks just days earlier, Naylor was brought in to provide left-handed power in the middle of the lineup. Through his first three games in a new uniform, the slugger posted a modest .273 average with no extra-base hits—until Monday's breakthrough. It was Naylor's 18th homer of the season and a welcome sign for a club clawing for positioning in both the AL West race and the Wild Card standings.
The Mariners vs. Athletics showdown also carried serious playoff implications. Seattle entered the night 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the division and tied with the Texas Rangers. A win over the last-place Athletics kept the pressure on Houston while fending off red-hot challengers like the Rangers, who are surging at 8-2 in their last ten games. The Mariners' trade deadline strategy clearly signaled their intent to contend, and Naylor's bat could be key.
The trade sent two Top 30 prospects to Arizona in exchange for Naylor, a rental bat who's earning $10.9 million this season. His instant impact could pay off big as Seattle navigates a tight schedule of AL West clashes down the stretch.
Naylor's home run also sparked reactions across social media. Fans praised the move and called for a potential extension, while analysts pointed to the veteran's power and postseason experience as valuable assets in the AL West race.
For a club hovering near a Wild Card slot, momentum like this matters. As the club pushes toward October, every win counts—and every swing like Naylor's could make the difference.

Shedeur Sanders impresses in his Browns preseason debut

All eyes in Cleveland were on Shedeur Sanders on Friday night, as the fifth-round rookie quarterback got the starting nod in the Browns preseason kickoff against the Carolina Panthers. The polarizing Sanders made those eyes bright and excited with an impressive performance in Cleveland's 30-10 win in Charlotte. Sanders, who hadn't taken any first-team reps at QB before getting the start on Friday, was poised, accurate and quite effective at the helm. He completed 14 of his 23 pass attempts, netting 138 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 19 yards. At least two of his passes were dropped by Browns receivers. Beyond the stats, Sanders played very well with his decision-making, his ability to run Kevin Stefanski's ball control offense and his ability to handle pressure--from the defense and from many vociferous critics just waiting for him to fail. This is an impressive Sunday throw to WR Kaden Davis for a touchdown: As Cory Kinnan from Browns Wire noted, Sanders was really dialed in outside the highlight plays, too, Some of his more impressive throws were not his scoring plays, either. Backed up inside his own 10, Sanders threw a dart from the endzone over the middle to convert a third-and-long. Right before the half on his second scoring drive, Sanders got on the move, evaded pressure, and layered a nice football down the sideline to Kent State alum Luke Floriea for a big gain. Sanders is battling with third-round pick Dillon Gabriel (who didn't play due to injury), veteran Kenny Pickett (also DNP with an injury) and venerable vet Joe Flacco in a four-way contest to earn Cleveland's starting QB role. Given his first real chance at running the show, Sanders put his best foot forward. This article originally appeared on Draft Wire: Shedeur Sanders impresses in his Browns preseason debut

Is Aaron Rodgers playing today? Steelers QB's preseason Week 1 status

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2025 NFL season to a one-year deal to be their starting quarterback. Steelers fans are going to have to wait a while longer before they see the 41-year-old on the field in game action for their team. Rodgers isn't expected to play in the Steelers' preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Instead, Pittsburgh will give three of their backup quarterbacks playing time in their first game action of the summer. Here's what to know about Rodgers' status and the Steelers' plans at quarterback for Friday's contest. Is Aaron Rodgers playing preseason Week 1? Rodgers will not be on the field for the Steelers' preseason Week 1 game against the Jaguars. Coach Mike Tomlin announced the 41-year-old would be among the starters to sit out the preseason opener. Rodgers expressed a willingness to play in preseason Week 1, noting he and Tomlin would have a conversation about the possibility. "It's an interesting conversation," Rodgers said Wednesday, per "I think Mike and I have that at some point. I don't think it's in the plan for me to play this week, but whatever Mike wants to do, I'm fully on board." Tomlin's decision to sit Rodgers comes just days after sixth-round rookie Will Howard was ruled out for the preseason because of a hand injury. The Steelers signed veteran quarterback Logan Woodside to provide depth behind Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. Otherwise, those two would have been the only available quarterbacks for Saturday's game. If you want to watch out-of-market games, a $7/month subscription to NFL+ will get you access to NFL Network, which will have every out-of-market game in the preseason. The downside of NFL+? When it comes to the regular season, it's a much less helpful option because there are far fewer NFL Network games during the regular season. More ways to watch NFL games in 2025:
