Jacksonville man pleads not guilty to deadly wrong-way crash turned armed carjacking on I-295
Rodney Wesley, the man charged in the deadly wrong-way crash turned armed carjacking on Interstate 295 earlier this month is pleading not guilty to the seven charges against him.
They're part of multiple separate cases but connected to the same pileup of cars on the interstate in the Jacksonville Heights area that Action News Jax first told you about more than three weeks ago.
The crash happened on February 4th and, as we told you earlier this month, Wesley was arrested two days later. The arrest report says Wesley was seen riding his bike and then was chased by officers to Osteen Street, where he was found hiding behind a shed.

On the day of the crash, the arrest report said Wesley had used a gun to steal a truck at a gas station on 103rd Street, started driving the wrong way on I-295, and hit a motorcycle head-on, killing the 66-year-old man, identified by police as Michael Simmons, driving it.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Wesley, after the crash, then tried stealing two other cars, a Mustang, and a Toyota SUV. Police say he hit the woman driving the Mustang in the face while trying to steal her car but ended up walking into the middle of I-295 and hopped onto the back of a tractor-trailer. The arrest report said he rode on the back for a little while before jumping off and running into the woods.
Some of the charges Wesley is facing include armed carjacking and grand theft auto. For the armed carjacking charge, alone, Florida law says he could face life in prison if he is convicted.
Wesley is scheduled for another court appearance on March 27 at 9 a.m.

Caught on camera: Man hit by driver at Southside car meet
Video circulating on social media shows the moment a man was hit by a driver at a car meet in a Southside parking lot. Witnesses said that it was supposed to be just a 'park and chill' type of meet. It appears the car swerved before hitting the man, and then took off. Action News Jax spoke with the man who was injured in the video, who said he had been released from the hospital. He said he had a head injury, but is now recovering. We asked JSO if they are investigating the incident, and a spokesperson said they were not aware of the incident or the video. We also requested reports Friday afternoon to see if police responded to the area the night this happened. We are waiting to hear back. As a member of the local car community, Ferrill said they don't stand for any kind of reckless behavior at their meets. Blackshear couple arrested in connection with the death of their baby, drug possession: GBI
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced this month that it arrested a Blackshear couple during an investigation into the death of their baby. GBI said that Dustin Sauls, 41, and Cierra Chancey, 36, are charged with concealing death and possessing cocaine in connection with the death of their 6-month-old child. The Baxley Police Department, located in Appling County, had first requested the assistance of GBI in the case more than two years ago, in September 2022. GBI said that preliminary information indicated that Sauls and Chancey delayed reporting the baby's death and had cocaine at the time. An autopsy was later completed by the GBI Medical Examiner's Office. Arrest reports obtained by Action News Jax show they were taken into custody by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office on May 30 while deputies were serving the out-of-county felony warrants. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< After conducting a search of their home on Radcliff Circle, the parents were arrested on the warrants and in addition to several new drug-related charges, including possession of cocaine and two charges each of possessing a Schedule III controlled substance. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office needs your help finding a missing woman. Doris Rhoden was last seen near her home in the area of Bulls Bay Highway and Pritchard Road on Thursday around 7 p.m. She left in her gold 2015 Kia Sorento with Florida tag number 61B-IPM. She may be traveling in the area of I-10 and Lane Avenue on Jacksonville's Westside. Mrs. Rhoden is 74 years old. According to JSO, she has been diagnosed with dementia.
