Playoff scenarios for FedEx St. Jude Championship: What players need to do to make top 50, BMW
The top 70 players in the FedExCup standings have qualified for the playoff-opening FedEx St. Jude Championship, which begins Thursday at TPC Southwind in Memphis. All but No. 2 Rory McIlroy are slated to compete.
The immediate goal for the 69 players teeing it up in Memphis is cracking the top 50, not only to advance to next week's BMW Championship but also lock up exemptions into all of next year's signature events.
Every player from No. 24 Sam Burns and above has mathematically clinched a spot in the top 50. The rest of the field still has work to do, though some more than others.
The winner receives 2,000 FedExCup points this week, meaning that if No. 70 Matti Schmid won, he could move as high as No. 3 in points. No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is guaranteed to hold onto the top spot as only McIlroy could've passed him this week.

I'm in good position heading into this year and really excited to be back here,' said Corey Connors. 'Love this golf course. So it's where you want to be.' 'Yeah, it's always exciting to come back here. It means you've had a good year and you got a chance to win the FedEx Cup,' Burns said. 'So it's always a good place to be.' Sunday's winner earns the $3.6 million-dollar first place prize. Part of the $20 million dollar purse at the FESJC. More important than the money, the Top 50 players after Memphis move on to round two of the FedEx Cup playoffs next week at the BMW Championships in Owings Mills, Maryland. Scottie Scheffler hilariously retells time that it didn't pay to be his friend
Being Scottie Scheffler comes with plenty of perks, one of which is not having to pay for a round of golf at your local course. So it would be safe to imagine that friends of the No. 1 golfer in the world would be extended a similar courtesy if they showed up to the links with Scheffler. But apparently that isn't always the case. Ahead of this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, Scheffler recalled a hilarious moment when a friend of his thought he was about to get a free round of golf, only to have the rug pulled from under them.
