Notify Amaravati as State Capital in next Parliment session, CM Naidu urges Amit Shah
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu requested the Centre to include Amaravati as the State Capital and and notify it in the Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Act.
Speaking to media after meeting several Union Ministers on Friday, Naidu said that during his discussion with Home Minister Amit Shah, he urged the Centre to notify Amaravati as the Capital of AP.
Though it was mentioned in the AP State Reorganisation Act that Hyderabad would remain as the common capital for both AP and Telangana for 10 years after the State bifurcation, it did not mention the capital of the residual Andhra Pradesh. With the ten-year period now concluded, the Chief Minister urged the Union Home Minister to take up the matter in the upcoming session of Parliament and officially designate Amaravati as the State capital.
Naidu said that Shah had agreed to notify Amaravati as the capital of AP. The CM also attended a review meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister to discuss the implementation of the three new criminal laws.
Accusing the previous YSRCP government for causing significant damage, Naidu said that although the coalition government has made some progress in restoring administrative order, it will take more time to fully recover from the damage done between 2019-24.
Rajnath asked to set up military cantonment in AP
During a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Naidu presented a strategic vision to establish the state as a national hub for defence manufacturing and aerospace innovation.
Naidu outlined a comprehensive plan encompassing industrial infrastructure, research collaborations, and strategic installations across key locations in AP. The proposals include development of integrated defence facilities, revival of critical manufacturing units, support for indigenous aviation programmes, establishment of testing and training centres, and creation of thematic defence hubs to promote regional specialisation. Naidu also requested the Defence Minister to establish a military cantonment in the state. 'When asked about military cantonment, the Defence Minister said he would examine the matter,' the CM said.
Naidu underlined AP's readiness-with its strong infrastructure base, skilled workforce, and proactive policy environment-to play a leading role in advancing Aatmanirbhar Bharat through self-reliant defence production.
Naidu also met Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and submitted a proposal for the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project.

Govt appoints RBI DG T. Rabi Sankar as 16th FinComm member
RBI Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar has been appointed as a part-time member of the 16th Finance Commission, the finance ministry said on Saturday (June 7, 2025). The appointment, the ministry said, 'is consequent to the resignation of one of the full-time members, former Finance Secretary Ajay Narayan Jha, on personal grounds'. "The President has appointed T. Rabi Sankar, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as a part-time Member of the 16th Finance Commission (XVIFC)," the ministry said in a statement. 'Mr. Sankar will hold office from the date of assuming charge until the submission of the Commission's Report or October 31, 2025, whichever is earlier,' it added. The commission, chaired by former Vice-Chairman of Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya, has four members and is assisted by Secretary Ritvik Pandey, two joint secretaries and one economic advisor. Retired bureaucrat Annie George Mathew and economist Manoj Panda are full-time members of the commission, while SBI Group Chief Economic Advisor Soumya Kanti Ghosh is a part-time member. The government constituted the 16th Finance Commission under the chairmanship of Panagariya on December 31, 2023. The panel would submit its report to the President by October 31, 2025. The report would be for five years commencing on April 1, 2026. Besides suggesting tax devolution between the Centre and states and revenue augmentation measures, the commission will review the present arrangements for financing disaster management initiatives with reference to the funds constituted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The Finance Commission is a constitutional body to provide suggestions on centre-state financial relations. The erstwhile 15th Finance Commission under N.K. Singh had recommended that states be given 41% of the divisible tax pool of the Centre during the five-year period 2021-22 to 2025-26, which is at the same level as was recommended by the 14th Finance Commission under Y.V. Reddy.

BJP names Kanad Purkayastha as candidate for Assam Rajya Sabha polls
Guwahati: The BJP on Saturday announced that the party's Assam state secretary Kanad Purkayastha would be its candidate for the June 19 Rajya Sabha election from the state. BJP's National General Secretary Arun Singh, in a statement, said the party's central election committee has approved the candidature of Purkayastha, who is currently the party's Assam state secretary. A party leader from southern Assam's Barak valley said that Purkayastha is the only son of veteran BJP leader and former Union minister Kabindra Purkayastha. Elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam are scheduled on June 19, with counting of votes set to take place the same day. The last date for filling of nominations is June 9, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 12. The ruling BJP had earlier announced that it would field a candidate for one of the seats, leaving the other seat to its ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam would be vacated after the retirement of Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP) on June 14. Assam has seven Rajya Sabha seats. After Trinamool Congress' Sushmita Dev, who was elected to the Upper House of Parliament from West Bengal, Purkayastha would be the second Rajya Sabha member from the Barak Valley. Hailing from Silchar, Dev, daughter of former Union Minister and late Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev, was earlier elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar parliamentary constituency. Over four million people, mostly Bengali speaking, reside in the three districts of the Barak Valley region in Southern Assam -- Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. Political observers said that despite the Barak Valley's substantial population and political significance, no leader from this region, adjoining Tripura, has previously been elected to the Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket. Purkayastha's nomination is an attempt to deal with this gap and aims to strengthen the BJP's base among Bengali Hindus in Barak Valley. The Purkayastha family has been influential in Assam's political circle as veteran leader Kabindra Purkayastha's legacy and Kanad's active participation in the BJP's political activities contribute to the family's persistent prominence in Assam politics.
