Agri minister Chouhan unveils first genome-edited rice varieties, yield to rise up to 30 pc

The Print04-05-2025

These varieties are recommended for major rice-growing states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal.
'It is an important day for us… Soon, these two new rice varieties will be made available to farmers,' Chouhan said, adding that the new varieties will enhance rice yields by 20-30 per cent, conserve water, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from rice cultivation.
New Delhi, May 4 (PTI) Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday unveiled the first genome-edited rice varieties '”DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) and Pusa DST Rice 1'” developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to address challenges of climate change and boost rice yields by up to 30 per cent.
Scientists developed these varieties by enhancing two widely grown rice types –” Samba Mahsuri (BPT5204) and MTU1010 (Cottondora Sannalu) –” with improved stress tolerance, yield, and climate adaptability, while retaining their original strengths.
Both varieties exhibit superior drought tolerance and high nitrogen-use efficiency.
The minister said DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) matures about 20 days earlier (130 days) than its parent, enabling earlier harvests and potential for crop rotation or multiple cropping cycles. The shorter duration of DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) allows farmers to save three irrigations.
Cultivation of both varieties across 5 million hectares could produce an additional 4.5 million tonnes of paddy, he said.
'India cannot achieve the goal of a developed nation without developing the farm sector exploring advanced technologies,' the minister said, calling on ICAR scientists to develop better varieties in pulses and oilseeds to reduce the country's import dependence.
These genome-edited rice varieties represent a major advancement in India's agricultural biotechnology, offering practical solutions to the dual challenges of climate change and food security. They also demonstrate the potential of genome editing for future crop improvement programs.
The agriculture minister emphasised that research scientists are key to the country's food security and ensuring India becomes 'a food basket of the world'. 'Currently, India exports Rs 48,000 crore worth of basmati rice.
However, we need to ensure nutrition-rich food for the future. This responsibility lies on the shoulders of our farm scientists,' he said.
Chouhan suggested a new formula: 'Minus-five Plus Ten' –” reducing rice acreage by 5 million hectares while enhancing yield by 10 million tonnes. 'The rice area should be shifted to pulses and oilseeds to increase production and reduce imports,' he said.
Agriculture Secretary Devesh Choudhary explained that the new rice varieties were developed using advanced technologies, each offering distinct advantages for yield, resilience, and quality.
'The genome-edited rice varieties released today have 20 per cent higher yields. They will be made available to the farming community through both public and private institutions and brought under the seed chain very soon,' he said.
ICAR Director General Mangi Lal Jat called it 'a historical day in India's agriculture' and emphasised developing better seed varieties to address climate change challenges.
'We need to adopt demand-driven research, not supply-driven. The research should be done taking farmers' feedback and needs,' he said, stressing the need to retain youth in farming under the motto of 'One nation, One national research system'.
Genome-edited rice varieties have previously been developed in countries like China and Japan, but many have remained in research settings with only a few reaching formal release or commercialisation. PTI LUX TRB

Top prison official suspended in Sri Lanka for presidential pardons abuse

The Ministry of Justice announced that the Cabinet decided to suspend the services of the two officials and Karunaratne was also arrested and remanded until June 11. Prisons chief Thushara Upuldeniya and Anuradhapura Jail Superintendent Mohan Karunaratne have been accused of wrongdoing in the misuse of presidential pardons. Colombo, Jun 9 (PTI) Two senior officials in Sri Lanka, including the Commissioner General of Prisons, were suspended on Monday for allegedly misusing the presidential pardon process to release convicts, the justice ministry said. The police's Crime Investigation Department (CID) questioned Upuldeniya on Sunday and Monday. The developments came after President Anura Kumara Dissanayake ordered the CID to probe the release of a convicted criminal from prison under a purported pardon from him. Dissanayake said that a list of those to be pardoned did not include a particular convict mentioned by the opposition in Parliament. According to the police, investigations revealed that convicts ineligible for presidential pardon had been illegally released. Under Article 34 (1) of the Sri Lankan Constitution, presidents are empowered to grant amnesties to convicts, subject to a strict judicial procedure. Agriculture output rises 40% in 10 years, says Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday said agriculture production in the country increased by 40 per cent in the last 10 years and that the sector saw growth rate of 5.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2024-25 financial year. Chouhan, who attended events here as part of the Central government's 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan' , said even a one-two per cent growth in agriculture is considered big in the world. Monday (June 9) is a historic day as it marks the first anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in his third tenure, he said. The year has been full of achievements, he added. "If I see from the agriculture perspective, it is the impact of PM Modi's vision, policies and programmes that agriculture growth rate was 5.4 per cent in the fourth quarter," he told reporters. The country has set new records in the production of wheat, paddy, soya bean, groundnut and others and the storehouses for grain are full, he said. "In the last 10 years, we have increased (agriculture) production by 40 per cent. There is no shortage of food grains and India is exporting to other countries," he said. He congratulated PM Modi, farmers and scientists on the record food production. Addressing a gathering as part of the Abhiyan, Chouhan said he had a meeting with officials during the recent India-Pakistan conflict to take stock of food grains. He said he was told that the warehouses are full and there is no cause for worry even if the conflict prolongs. He emphasised ensuring food security, increasing farmers' income, making available nutritious food and safeguarding soil health. Observing that agriculture scientists are being encouraged to interact with farmers, he said 2,170 scientific teams are visiting villages across the country. 'Derogatory' Remarks Against Amaravati: Journalist Who Hosted Show Arrested

Amaravati: Senior Telugu journalist Kommineni Srinivas Rao was arrested in Hyderabad on Monday for hosting a programme on a vernacular channel where a scribe allegedly made derogatory remarks against the greenfield capital city Amaravati, said a police official. Guntur district Superintendent of Police S Satish confirmed that Thullur police from Amaravati have arrested the journalist. "Thullur police have arrested Kommineni Srinivas Rao from Hyderabad over the derogatory remarks against Amaravati," Satish told PTI, adding that the journalist is being brought to Andhra Pradesh from Telangana. VVR Krishna Raju, the journalist, who was also part of the programme, was accused of spewing venom against Amaravati and its women. According to information shared by a source close to the TDP-led NDA government, the duo were booked under BNS Sections 79, 196 (1), 353 (2), 299, 356 (2) and 61 (1) and Section 67 of the IT Act, including Section (1) of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Meanwhile, YSRCP said that an FIR was registered against Rao four days ago in Thullur police station, accusing him of "failing to intervene during the broadcast", which featured those alleged vitriolic remarks. "Immediately after his arrest, Rao was transferred to Vijayawada. Rao, a senior citizen, questioned the legality of the arrest without explanation," said a note from the YSRCP. Condemning the arrest, YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, called it a "political vendetta". "In any discussion, diverse opinions are natural. Punishing an anchor for guests' statements is not only unjust, it's dangerous," Reddy said in a post on 'X'. The former chief minister questioned the rationale behind punishing a moderator for remarks made by panelists during a televised debate, warning such actions endanger democratic discourse and press freedom. He accused the TDP-led NDA government of suppressing dissent, using fear and intimidation tactics to silence intellectuals, journalists, and opposition voices across the southern state. He alleged that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was "weaponising the state apparatus" to divert public attention from failures, corruption, and broken electoral promises. "You (Naidu) were given five years-one has already passed. The day will come when the people will demand answers for your abuses and injustices," Reddy warned.
