Lewis Hamilton 'useless' admission prompts 'can't cope' comment from Ferrari boss

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Frederic Vasseur has spoken about the challenges facing Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari after the seven-time Formula 1 champion said the team 'probably needs to change driver'
Frederic Vasseur moved to take some of the pressure off Lewis Hamilton's shoulders after the Brit labelled himself "useless". The seven-time Formula 1 champion was extremely self-critical after a poor showing in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hamilton often wears his heart on his sleeve and, amid his qualifying struggles over the last couple of years, has often shouldered the blame. But he produced one of his most difficult-to-watch interviews to date in the Budapest media pen when he told Sky Sports that Ferrari"probably need to change driver".

The 40-year-old found it particularly tough to see team-mate Charles Leclerc put the other Ferrari on pole, while he could only find enough speed for 12th on the grid for the Budapest race. "The team has no problem, the other car is on pole," he muttered.

Getting Hamilton's head back into a good place is a vital job for team principal Vasseur. And he began that process when speaking to Italian television, telling the sister channel to Sky Sports that it is natural for someone to struggle coming into Ferrari having spent so long with Mercedes machinery.
"He spent 20 years in the same environment," said the Frenchman. "It is a huge change. The car cannot cope with his driving style yet. But I want both cars fighting for podiums."
Most of the speculation surrounding Ferrari of late has not been around Hamilton's future, but that of his boss. Some sections of the Italian press in particular have spent recent weeks reporting that Vasseur's place was at risk and that the team were lining up potential replacements.
But Ferrari put an end to those rumours this week by handing the Frenchman a new multi-year contract extension. "Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing," a statement read.
"Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula 1. Renewing Fred's contract reflects Ferrari's determination to build on the foundations laid so far. His ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari's values and long-term ambitions.

"Under Fred's leadership, Scuderia Ferrari HP is united, focused, and committed to continuous improvement. The trust placed in him reflects the team's confidence in its strategic direction and reinforces a shared determination to deliver the results that Ferrari's fans, drivers, and team members expect and deserve."
It was a popular decision with both the team's drivers, who had publicly given the boss their backing in response to the speculation around his future. "I am still trying to learn the way he works, but I have absolute confidence in Fred, as I have always said," was Hamilton's reaction to the news.

Christian Horner tipped for F1 return on one condition

Christian Horner has been tipped to return to F1 after his shock departure from Red Bull last month but only if one condition is met. Horner was relieved of his duties as Red Bull F1 CEO and team principal in July after 20 years at the helm, during which time he led the team to six constructors' and eight drivers' titles. The departure brought to an end a tumultuous 18 months for the team, with a divide forming within the management structure despite Max Verstappen claiming his fourth drivers' championship last year. Long-term Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko recently confirmed Horner's dismissal was due to under-performance, with the formerly dominant team languishing in fourth place in the constructors' standings. Speculation has been rife as to what the 51-year-old Englishman's next move will be and he has been linked with a move to Ferrari down the years. Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who is known to be close to Horner, has revealed that the manner of the departure caught him out and that a return to the sport could happen but only on the proviso that he could own part of a team – a set-up that Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has but Horner never got at Red Bull. Ecclestone told Sky Sports: 'At the moment, I think it's still a bit of a shock for him. So he will gradually get over this and realise there are other things in the world to do and he'll get on and do them. 'I have made it known to friends there [Red Bull] that maybe it was a little bit ruthless, to do it in the way that they did it, but they didn't have much choice. They decided this was what they were going to do and they had to get on and do it. 'I don't know how or where or whether he wants to [come back to F1]. He probably doesn't want to because the position he really wanted at Red Bull was to own part of the team. 'Unless he gets somebody to put the money up to buy a team, I can't see it happening.' Horner was replaced at Red Bull by Racing Bulls boss Laurent Mekies, who took over his dual role as chief executive and team principal. The Englishman had a frosty relationship with some of the other F1 team bosses, most notably Zak Brown at McLaren, and Brown has claimed that relations between the two outfits will be better now Mekies is in charge. He said: 'I'm happy Laurent's in the role he is in. I like Laurent, that'll be healthy and maybe we can get back to focusing on competition on the track. 'There's always going to be some political aspects to the sport, but I think it is going to be healthier with Laurent. I'm a fan of Laurent. I have known him for a long time, and it'll be good to go racing against him. 'It went too far [previously]. There's always going to be politicking in F1 – let's try and shut down their flexi-wings and that stuff – but when you start getting into frivolous allegations, that's just going too far. 'If I look up and down the pit lane now, I see us fighting each other hard politically, but the line is not being crossed. And that line got crossed before. I think that we'll see a little bit of a change for the better.'

Lionel Messi didn't hold back on attitude of Tottenham's James Maddison replacement option

Tottenham are reportedly considering a move for Como playmaker Nico Paz, who has previously been praised by Lionel Messi for his incredible mentality on the pitch Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly targeting a swoop for Nico Paz, a promising youngster who previously caught Lionel Messi 's eye with his exceptional attitude. Spurs' pursuit of Paz has intensified after Thomas Frank has been forced to explore the transfer market following James Maddison's ACL setback during pre-season. ‌ The injury threatens to rule the England midfielder out for the majority of the 2025/2026 season. Frank is understood to be seeking a new number 10 and Paz turned heads after claiming Serie A 's Young Player of the Year accolade for the 2024/25 campaign, registering 14 goal contributions under Cesc Fabregas at Como. ‌ His display on his senior debut for Argentina, where he set up Messi during a commanding 6-0 triumph over Bolivia, also earned glowing reviews from the footballing icon. "Nico Paz has an incredible mindset, and that's why he's where he is," Messi said. ‌ "Nico has a lot of quality and understands the game perfectly. He has an incredible mindset, and he's with Cesc Fabregas as coach who is my friend and will help him grow a lot." While The Athletic suggests that Tottenham have yet to submit an official bid for Paz, Italian outlets claim that Como have rejected a £35m approach from Frank's side. The club are believed to be holding out for approximately £60m to part ways with the 20-year-old. Paz's journey with Como began when he joined from Real Madrid in 2024 for a fee of £5.2m, playing a crucial role in the Italian side's impressive 10th-place finish in Serie A. However, Spurs may find it tricky to bring Paz to north London. Como are said to be standing firm on any potential sale, and there's the added complication of a 50% sell-on clause held by Real. The Athletic reports that while they chose not to activate a £6.9m buy-back option for Paz this year, they still have an £8m clause for 2026 and a £9m clause for 2027, along with the right to match any offer at any time. ‌ Maddison's injury occurred in Spurs' pre-season clash with Newcastle United in South Korea. He went down after an incident away from the ball and had to be stretchered off the field by medical staff. Frank admitted his concern after the game that Maddison could miss a huge chunk of the season, months after injuring the same knee in the previous campaign, with his worst fears later confirmed. Spurs were already on the hunt for a new number 10, having attempted to lure Morgan Gibbs-White away from Nottingham Forest before the England international penned a new deal with his club. With Son Heung-min's departure and Dejan Kulusevski also sidelined due to injury, Paz could become a prime target in the coming weeks.
