Boone says Yankees' defense ‘just not good enough' after 4 errors in loss to Blue Jays
'We've got to, obviously, tighten it up,' Boone said. 'Confident we will. We'll continue to work at it. We have good defenders here, but tonight was obviously a rough night for us.'
Left-hander Max Fried and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. made throwing errors, while first baseman Ben Rice and outfielder Jasson Domínguez made fielding errors.
The Yankees also made several miscues that didn't count as errors, including Cody Bellinger losing a flyball in the twilight and no one covering the plate after Fried's errant throw in the fifth inning.
'Today was a little shaky,' Bellinger said.
Davis Schneider scored from third base when Fried bounced his throw home on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s chopper.
'Tough angle and just not a good throw,' said Fried, a three-time Gold Glove winner with Atlanta.
George Springer scored from second base after the ball rolled away from catcher J.C. Escarra.
The Yankees made seven errors in the three-game series, including a pair of poor throws that led to runs for Toronto in Monday's series opener, a 4-1 Blue Jays win.
'We haven't been playing that well on defense,' slugger Aaron Judge said. 'We've got a lot of things we've got to clean up.'
New York also struggled defensively while getting swept in four games at Toronto from June 30 to July 3 as the Blue Jays leapfrogged the Yankees atop the AL East.
'Obviously, we've had two (crummy) series up here,' Boone said. 'There's no way around it. Maybe we'll get a chance to come back here at some point and flip that script.'
New York has committed 52 errors in 102 games. The Yankees are 41-22 when they play error-free baseball but 15-24 when they make at least one miscue.
'It's in our control so we'll take care of it,' Judge said.

Judge, 33, leads the majors in batting (.342), on-base percentage (.449) and slugging (.711) and has 37 homers and 85 RBIs in 103 games this season. Leiter, 34, is 4-6 with a 4.46 ERA and two saves in 41 relief appearances for New York this season. De Los Santos, 27, has no decisions and a 1.78 ERA in 17 appearances out of the Yankees' bullpen this season. Brubaker, 31, has no decisions and a 3.38 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Yankees this season. Injuries to key players dampen excitement for WNBA's inaugural Rivals Week
NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA hoped to create some buzz with its inaugural Rivals Week, which is slated to begin on Saturday. Unfortunately, injuries to key players like Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has dampened some of the excitement. The week was set to tip-off with a primetime matchup between Clark's Fever and Reese's Sky on Saturday night. Clark is definitely out while still recovering from a groin strain that's sidelined her already for a few weeks. Reese has missed four of the past five games with a back injury. Collier and Stewart were set for a second meeting between Minnesota and New York on Sunday, but neither will play in the game. Collier is sidelined with a sprained right ankle and Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee. The two teams played an epic WNBA Finals last season, although both sides have downplayed it being a rivalry just yet. 'It's a rivalry because of what happened in the Finals last year and I think it's good that it has people talking,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. 'We have passionate fans. We have people talking about our league and that's a good thing.' Right now only four games separate second-place New York (18-10) from eighth place Golden State (14-14) with a month left in the season. 'The timing of that week is critical, because in August you start to really make that playoff push,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said back when the Rivals Week was announced. 'So it would be great to have those matchups during that period to drive that playoff push into September and crown a champion in October.' Power poll rankings Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta and New York behind the Lynx. Riding a five-game winning streak, Indiana moved up to fourth.
