E.L.F. Cosmetics 'overpriced beauty' ad controversy explained as fans boycott viral brand

Daily Mirror2 days ago
e.l.f. Cosmetics have faced backlash over their new ad campaign, which stars controversial comedian Matt Rife as fans threaten to boycott the beauty brand in retaliation
E.L.F. Cosmetics has responded to criticism over its latest advert featuring the contentious comedian Matt Rife. The beauty brand is still dealing with backlash from their campaign, leading many people to boycott their products.

The ad, titled e.l.f.ino and schmarnes: Affordable Beauty Attorneys, stars Matt Rife and drag queen Heidi N Closet. In the promotional video, the duo play two solicitors advocating for more affordable makeup products.

Following the ad's debut, numerous individuals took to YouTube to voice their anger over Matt being the face of it, given his past jokes about domestic violence.

This controversy comes after Matt raised eyebrows by purchasing the infamous Connecticut property of Ed and Lorraine Warren, home to the haunted Annabelle Doll. It comes as the murky history of the doll, now in Matt's possession, was revealed.
The cosmetics company released a statement admitting they had made an error with the campaign, stating: "You know us, we're always listening and we've heard you. This campaign aimed to humorously spotlight beauty justice. We understand we missed the mark with people we care about in our e.l.f. Community. While e.l.f.ino and schmarnes closes today, we'll continue to make the case against overpriced beauty."

Matt and Heidi N Closet portraying barristers dubbed "affordable beauties" nods to the former New York personal-injury law firm Cellino and Barnes - who sought to protect their clients from "overpriced makeup products." Rife states in the advert: "I know a thing or two about red flags. And pricey makeup? You deserve better than that."

Critics slammed the decision to feature the comedian on social media - arguing he wasn't appropriate given he cracked a joke about domestic violence in his 2023 Netflix special, Natural Selection where he said: "My boy who I was with was like, 'Yeah, I feel bad for her, man, I feel like they should put her in the kitchen or something where nobody has to see her face.' And I was like, 'Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn't have that black eye.'"
One individual remarked on the brand's Instagram post regarding the advert, "Oooooh. Matt Rife? The guy who jokes about DV? In an ad targeted to women? That's, um. A choice."

Despite issuing their statement, the campaign and its promotional images remain live on its social media channels. Soon after E.l.f. published their statement, the company's Global Chief of Marketing Officer Kory Marchisotto also tackled the backlash.
He told The Business of Beauty they were "very surprised" to see the online backlash, adding: "There is a big gap between our intention and how this missed the mark for some people. We always aim to deliver positivity, and this one didn't. So we find ourselves in a position where, quite honestly, that doesn't feel good for us."
Calls to boycott the brand have taken off on several social media platforms, with beauty influencers, including those who have previously partnered with e.l.f., leading the charge. Some even posted videos of themselves throwing out their e.l.f. products.

Yarely Ashley Hermosillo, 27, was hit by a stray bullet while sitting beside her four-year-old son when two drivers clashed at a red light - causing one of them to allegedly open fire and hit her An influencer was tragically was gunned down in front of her toddler and partner after being caught in a road rage shootout. ‌ Yarely Ashley Hermosillo, a social media star who had more than 144,000 followers on Instagram, was hit by a stray bullet while sitting beside her four-year-old son during the chaos in Glendale, Arizona on Friday. Police say the violence erupted in a clash between two drivers at a red light, during which Jesus Preciado Dousten, 33, allegedly opened fire. ‌ He has since been arrested on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, AZFamily reports. According to police, Dousten pulled out a handgun and fired toward another driver. ‌ The round pierced Hermosillo's vehicle through the passenger window, striking her in the head as her partner drove up alongside the truck - completely unaware of the danger. The mum was rushed to hospital but sadly could not be saved. "My question still is, why would you just randomly shoot the other way? He obviously didn't know the other car was there," Glendale Police Sergeant Brian Hoskins told the outlet. "That's the thing, as gun owners, you have to know where you're shooting, what you're pointing at. You know, those are the responsibilities of being a responsible gun owner. You can't just fire rounds randomly throughout. Specifically, a high, highly populated city." Dousten was identified as the pickup's owner and later arrested after police found two handguns in his apartment. Hermosillo, who also shared content on Facebook and TikTok, had built an audience of more than 300,000 with her cooking and lifestyle videos. Her devastated family has launched a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs, remembering her as "a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a beautiful soul whose light touched everyone who knew her." The tribute added: "She leaves behind her husband and their 4-year-old son, who now face an unimaginable loss. Yarely's greatest joy in life was being a mother, and she poured her heart into caring for her little boy. She was an innocent victim caught in the middle of a road rage incident between others, leaving her family and friends devastated."

Pormanove had been taking part in dangerous online challenges alongside fellow content creators which is suspected to have led to his death. Two of the men involved were Owen Cenazandotti, a Frenchman known as "Naruto", and another man only known as "Safine". Naruto and Safine were seen throwing water in Pormanove's face in an attempt to revive him after his death when horrified viewers of the livestream alerted them of his state. The Sun can now reveal that both men were arrested in January over charges linked to content involving Pormanove. A preliminary investigation by Nice prosecutors was looking into incitement to hatred, violence against vulnerable people and dissemination of images that undermine the integrity of individuals. The two men were released without further action eight months ago. Their lawyers have now been forced to again deny any wrongdoing on behalf of the pair after Pormanove's passing. Yassin Sadouni, the lawyer for Naruto said his client was completely innocent. He claimed his client is the target of a "cyberbullying campaign". Influencer Yarely Ashley Hermosillo, 27, shot dead in front of her children after getting caught in road rage crossfire Mr Sadouni said today: "Several people, far from respecting the memory of the deceased and his grief, have chosen to fuel hatred and engage in online harassment against him. "A complaint will be filed in the coming days with the Paris prosecutor's office's online hate crime unit so that the perpetrators can be identified and prosecuted." Detectives have remained at the Contes studio where the streamer was found with an investigating source saying "criminal charges" are being considered, following the opening of a judicial enquiry. The source told The Sun: "There is particular concern that the death of the victim was being livestreamed, with a counter displaying 298 hours of live footage at the time of death. "His last breath was recorded by the cameras, and is still being shown on social media. "The footage was only cut off after water was thrown in his face to unsuccessfully try and revive him. "The deceased's online abusers will be interviewed at length." Before his death, Pormanove had completed 10 consecutive days of streams which all saw him be regularly attacked. 7 Before his death, Pormanove had completed 10 consecutive days of streams which all saw him be regularly attacked Credit: YouTube 7 Stunts included being beaten up, deprived of sleep, and being tied up, and pelted with water and paint Credit: YouTube 7 An autopsy is due to be performed to see if any violence contributed to the influencer's death Credit: X Stunts included being beaten up, deprived of sleep, and being tied up, and pelted with water and paint. The marathon challenge was broadcast by platforms including Kick, the Australian competitor of the Amazon-owned, Twitch. Thousands of viewers, including children, first started to get worried when Pormanove showed no sign of life as he lay slumped on a mattress. A spokesman for Nice judicial police said an autopsy is due to be performed to see if any violence contributed to his death. French digital technology minister Clara Chappaz has voiced her serious concerns over the content being produced. She said: "The death of 'Jean Pormanove' and the violence he suffered are an absolute horror. "Holding online platforms responsible for the dissemination of illegal content is not an option – it is the law. "This type of failure can lead to the worst and has no place in France, Europe, or anywhere else." Ms Chappaz said Pormanove "had been humiliated and abused for months" as she confirmed Naruto and Safine as well as Kick representatives will now be interviewed. Pormanove had more than a million followers across social media, and was particularly popular on Kick. A spokesperson for Kick said: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jean Pormanove and extend our condolences to his family, friends, and community. "We are urgently reviewing the circumstances and engaging with relevant stakeholders to investigate the situation. "Kick's community guidelines are designed to protect creators, and we remain committed to upholding these standards across our platform."
