UNDP Report: Egypt Makes Continued Progress in Human Development with Improved Health, Education, Gender Metrics
CAIRO - 19 MAY 2025: According to the latest Global Human Development Report 2025 published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Egypt's Human Development Index (HDI) increased from 0.751 in 2022 to 0.754 in 2023. This marks continued progress in the country's social and economic development.
The report places Egypt firmly in the 'high human development' category, consistent with the previous year's classification. Although Egypt's HDI remains just below the global average of 0.756, it surpasses averages for developing nations and Arab countries, demonstrating positive strides within its regional context.
Titled 'Human and Capabilities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,' the report also explores the growing influence of artificial intelligence and digital transformations on human development worldwide, raising questions about their potential impact on the future.
Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, emphasized that the HDI improvement is a result of government initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life. Key programs include family development projects, health insurance expansion, women's empowerment efforts, and advances in the technology sector.
Preparations are underway for Egypt's 2025 national human development report, which will provide a comprehensive assessment of progress and policy recommendations, particularly in light of global economic challenges.
UNDP's Resident Representative, Alessandro Fracassetti, noted the global slowdown in human development progress, highlighting the need for policies that harness technological advances like AI to support inclusive and sustainable growth in Egypt and beyond.
Life expectancy in Egypt reached 71.6 years, with educational indicators also showing improvement — expected schooling years increased to 13.1, and mean adult schooling reached 10.1 years.
The Gender Development Index (GDI) for Egypt stands at 0.895, meaning women achieve nearly 90% of men's development level, higher than the Arab regional average but still below the global average. The Gender Inequality Index (GII) improved as well, placing Egypt ahead of both regional and global averages in addressing gender disparities.

Following an initial review, 261 submissions advanced to the administrative and technical screening stage, which involved verifying compliance with the award's eligibility criteria and guidelines. Of those, 161 applications were confirmed as eligible and are now set to proceed to the judging phase, scheduled to begin on 2 June and continue until 15 October. The judging process will be carried out by specialized committees comprising distinguished experts in the field. Each submission will be assessed according to the specific evaluation criteria established for each award category. Dr. Salama Al Muhairi, Director of Medical Excellence at Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, emphasized the significance of this stage, noting that the evaluation and screening of submissions adhere to the highest standards to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process. She added that these efforts reflect the merit and credibility of the Medical Excellence Awards, which seek to spotlight innovations and achievements that contribute to the advancement of medical practices. The awards also aim to encourage and support researchers in producing impactful and innovative studies in medicine and healthcare. The Foundation is committed to sharing the benefits of award-winning work, offering it as a source of inspiration and a model for excellence in scientific and medical fields. These achievements also contribute to the development of new solutions to address growing challenges in the healthcare sector. The Medical Excellence Awards consist of two main categories. The first is dedicated to supporting health and research achievements across the Arab world and includes the Arab Award for Health Sector Research and the Arab Award for Genetic Sciences. The second category focuses on recognizing exceptional contributions within the United Arab Emirates and includes the Best Research in Healthcare Award, the Innovation in Healthcare Award, and the Hamdan Award for Distinguished Personalities. Over previous cycles, the awards have garnered wide recognition and attracted high-quality submissions from both inside and outside the UAE. Egypt's pharmaceutical market hits EGP 309bn in 2024, marking 43% growth
Egypt's pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309bn in sales in 2024, up from EGP 216bn in 2023—reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase, according to Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA). The announcement came during the EDA's 15th Board of Directors meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, alongside other senior officials. The meeting reviewed several strategic updates, including the latest activities of the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia and progress in digital transformation across the Authority. These digital initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment. A key highlight of the meeting was the EDA's continued success in gaining international accreditation. In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Authority Maturity Level 3 status in the field of medicines—an achievement that follows its earlier Maturity Level 3 accreditation for vaccines in March 2022. EDA laboratories have also been accredited by both the WHO and the European Union, a milestone that positions them as globally recognized reference labs. The Authority's growing international presence was further underscored by its contributions to regulatory capacity-building programs across the Arab and African regions. With WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation, the EDA has assumed a leading role in supporting regulatory system development throughout Africa. The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) has selected EDA's Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). Under this designation, the Authority has conducted 12 international training programs for countries including Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria. Additionally, the meeting showcased progress in EDA's internship programs, including the pilot launch of a new Learning Management System (LMS) platform aimed at enhancing professional training and knowledge transfer.
