OMA Cinema, IMAX, And Vox Cinema Collaboration Opens In Dubai
The Oma designed IMAX Vox Cinema theater in Dubai features dual laser projection, 12-channel sounds ... More and seven booths.
A couple of weeks back, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was released into cinemas for a limited run to celebrate its 20th anniversary. I went along to see it in 4DX format, which involves seats that move in sync with the on-screen action, along with other effects such as flashing lights, air blasts, and kicks in the back. It was fab! Being tipped forward and back in my seat as Obi-Wan says his classic 'another happy landing' line was every bit as much fun as I had hoped.
Revenge of the Sith shows us the Galactic Senate, first introduced on screen in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and also making regular appearances on our TVs right now in the superb second series of Andor on Disney+.
Some years ago, I wrote about Oma Cinema, a French company that was looking to create an entirely new cinema experience with a bold new design. Everyone who saw the pictures immediately noted the similarity to the Galactic Senate in Star Wars, but when I put this to the co-founder in an interview, he claimed, much to my surprise, that this wasn't deliberate and that no one had noticed the resemblance.
I admit that I hadn't realised that Oma Cinema had made good on its promises and, just a few weeks ago, it opened a theater in Dubai. A refurbishment of an existing IMAX theater, this is a collaboration between the local Vox Cinema chain and IMAX. Equipped with a dual-laser IMAX laser projector and a 12-channel sound system, the room has a total of 255 seats.
Patrons get to enjoy the company of four others in each of the booths.
As you can see in the image, the Galactic Senate vibes are strong with this design, and while somewhat disappointingly they don't float and move, the seven circular pods offer five seats for a more intimate viewing experience with friends or family.
All the seats in the room also offer large recliners and trays for food and snacks. While I admit food in the cinema is not something I feel I need, I do admit that more legroom would be nice, especially with the long running times of many films.
In the designs I saw all those years ago, the pods were noticeably close to the screen, but in the Dubai theater they are at the back. The screen in this Vox theater is 23m wide by 12.3m high, so not huge compared to the 19.8m high screen in the BFI IMAX. As such, I do wonder if you'd be sacrificing visual impact for comfort and some snacks. Still, as they are in different parts of the world, it's hardly an either/or scenario. As a refurbishment, the projection room and screen had to remain in their original positions, so, evidently, this is something of a real-world compromise.
While a trip to Dubai isn't on my immediate agenda, should I ever find myself there, I'd certainly want to try it out. I'd also be keen to see what an OMA Cinema/IMAX cinema built from the ground up would look like — I'm sure it would be out of this world.

Lindsay Lohan shares struggles with LA after moving to Dubai to escape Hollywood stress
After nearly 30 years in the spotlight, Lindsay Lohan took a step back from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood and uprooted her life from Los Angeles to Dubai in 2014. Since then, the "Mean Girls" actress, 38, has not only become a wife and a mother, she has found peace within herself. Lohan, who appears on the cover of Elle's 2025 Summer Issue, opened up about her life overseas and what she's learned about herself, both personally and professionally, since making the move. "It's hard in L.A. Even taking my son to the park in L.A., I get stressed. I'm like, 'Are there cameras?' In New York, there's no worry; no one bothers us," said Lohan, who shares 1-year-old son Luai with husband Bader Shammas. "Everyone has their own thing going on. There's a different kind of energy in New York. I'd rather have downtime in New York than I would in L.A." "But the nice thing about L.A. is, I like space [and you get that here]. But I'm thinking as I'm saying this, the funny thing is, in Dubai I get all of those things. I get the privacy, I get the peace, I get the space. I don't have to worry there. I feel safe." Lohan, who began working at age 3 and gained stardom with her first movie role in the 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap," was thrown into the thick of Hollywood. Often facing public scrutiny, the "Freaky Friday" star had enough and moved to Dubai in 2014. "I feel like some of [my work] got overshadowed by paparazzi and all that kind of stuff when I was younger, and that's kind of annoying. I wish that part didn't happen," Lindsay told Bustle in 2024. "I feel like that kind of took on a life of its own. So that's why I wanted to disappear. I was like, 'Unless there's no story here, they're not going to focus on just my work.'" In 2022, Lohan spoke about how she was taking control of her own narrative through social media. "In Dubai I get all of those things. I get the privacy, I get the peace, I get the space. I don't have to worry there. I feel safe." "When I first started out in the business, none of us had a say in how to control our own narrative," she told Cosmopolitan. "There were paparazzi pictures, and then people ran with it. So I think it's really good that, in this day and age, people can say who they are and who they want to be. And I admire and appreciate that. I'm a little jealous because I didn't have that. But I think it moves really fast, and I just try to keep up as best I can. And I check everything before I post it. I'll send it to people, because you have to." "You have to take everything people say with a grain of salt and just be you and slow down because everyone's so quick right now," she said. "People just don't stop. You've got to chill." After moving to Dubai, Lohan quickly learned the power of saying "no" when it comes to picking and choosing professional projects. "They teach you to say 'yes' to everything, and that's not really what life's all about," she told Bustle of her earlier years in the industry. "I was like, 'What if I never fall in love? What if this never happens?' And it took me just taking time for me for all those doors to open and the 'yeses' to come, the things I wanted to say 'yes' to." Since her return to the big screen, Lohan, who stars alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in "Freakier Friday," said she's found that prioritizing herself makes a huge difference in her overall well-being. "[Jamie and I] are both very family-oriented people. We always talk about that, and one of the other big things [she's taught me] is to always take care of yourself first," she told Elle. "Because without that, how can you do everything for everyone else?" "I love having a routine, and I like schedules," she continued. "So, my morning routine: waking up, writing in my journal, sipping my green tea, breakfast with my son, and then Pilates, making sure I go." Despite her hectic schedule, Lohan said the "most important thing" in her life is family. "I mean, it's the most important thing: my husband, my son and me. It's all about balance and, as I said, routine. Especially when you have a kid, routine is the most important thing. And whatever their routine is, I've got to live by that." Lohan is no stranger to criticism. With fame comes speculative curiosity, especially when it comes to her appearance. Elsewhere in the Elle interview, Lohan shut down rumors that she had a facelift. The star shared the secrets behind the skincare routine that she says has dramatically altered her look. "Everyone does Botox," Lohan said. "I drink this juice every morning. It's like carrot, ginger, lemon, olive oil, apple. I also drink a lot of green tea, a lot of water. I'm a big pickled beets person, so I put them in almost everything. My skincare is very specific. I'm trying out some serums now that I'm doing. I'm testing them." "Also, I'm a big believer in ice-cold water on your face when you wake up," the 38-year-old said. "I drink lemon juice a lot. I also put tons of chia seeds in my water. Eye patches I do every morning. I'm into lasers." "I did Morpheus8 (a noninvasive radiofrequency microneedling treatment) once, and then I realized my skin is so thin that I can't be doing that," Lohan said. "My skin changed after having my son. It got really sensitive. That's what really made me change my whole routine and diet and everything. I did blood tests, and I was like, 'I want to know everything I'm allergic to.' So I cut everything out, and that's kind of when everything started to change for me."

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (May 30-June 1)
For the final weekend of May, Hulu is adding one of the most important political dramas of 2024. The Seed of the Sacred Fig was made by Iranian filmmakers and actors who risked imprisonment for their involvement with the film. The fact that it was made at all feels like a miracle, and now it's an easy selection for one of the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend. Our other two picks for the week include a newly added sex comedy/drama and one of the few Star Wars films that's still on Hulu. But don't wait until the first day of June to watch that one. It's probably going home to Disney+ after May 31, so catch it while you can. Recommended Videos Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) The story behind the 2025 Oscar-nominated The Seed of the Sacred Fig is just as interesting and compelling as the film itself. Iranian writer and director Mohammad Rasoulof was forced to flee his country after making the movie, but stars Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh remain trapped in their homeland. Rasoulof set the story against the real uprising of young women in Iran who pushed back against the harsh religious restrictions placed upon what they could wear in public. Zareh plays Iman, a lawyer who gets his desired promotion to Iran's Revolutionary Court, only to realize that he's supposed to rubber-stamp the sentences brought before him without trial. Iman is also forbidden from telling his wife, Najmeh (Golestani), or their daughters, Rezvan (Mahsa Rostami) and Sana (Setareh Maleki), about his new job. He's also given a handgun for protection. When the gun goes missing, Iman becomes increasingly paranoid about the intentions of his wife and children, so much so that it may destroy their bond as a family. Watch The Seed of the Sacred Fig on Hulu. How to Please a Woman (2022) How to Please a Woman is an Australian sex comedy with some drama mixed in as well. Sally Phillips stars as Gina, a middle-aged woman who has an epiphany when her friends send her a stripper, Tom (Alexander England), for her birthday. It turns out that Gina doesn't want to have sex with Tom, but she is very turned on by watching him clean her house with his shirt off. That inspires Gina to save Tom's employers at a moving company and transform them into a cleaning service geared towards women that can also offer sexual gratification on the side. It's a very freeing decision by Gina, as she finally questions what she wants out of her now sexless marriage. But just because Gina feels liberated enough to ask those questions, it doesn't mean she'll like the answers she receives. Watch How to Please a Woman on Hulu. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be on Hulu through at least May 31. Hulu hasn't confirmed it's leaving on June 1, but you should assume that it is. Rogue One is by far the best Star Wars movie in decades and the one that recaptures the flavor of the original trilogy more than any of the prequels or sequels. In the aftermath of Andor, the movie now plays very differently for a few characters who had larger parts on that show. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) has a secondary role here to Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a young woman who unexpectedly holds the key to saving the Rebel Alliance from the Death Star. Jyn's father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), helped build the Death Star, and the message he has for his daughter may help the rebels destroy it. But first, Jyn has to be convinced to accompany Cassian and his droid, K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), on a mission to a world under Imperial occupation. From there, it's clear that the only way to stop the Death Star is by stealing the plans from the most secure facility in the entire Empire. Watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on Hulu.
