‘Social justice is ensuring that one section of the community is not traditionally involved in garbage disposal': Thirumavalavan

The Hindu19 hours ago
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder and Chidambaram M.P., Thol. Thirumavalavan has said it is imperative that those who have traditionally been involved in garbage disposal end that cycle of continuing the tradition.
Speaking at his 63rd birthday celebrations in Chennai, which commenced on Saturday evening and extended past midnight, Mr. Thirumavalavan rued the slander faced by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and pressure exerted to leave the DMK alliance.
'Even recently during the conservancy workers protests, many asked why Thirumavalavan didn't protest against the State Government. Comrade Sinthanai Selvan went there on fourth day. I went and spent one hour with them on fifth day. I spoke with Chief Minister on Day 6 and I kept speaking to ministers. Though I urged the State Government to ensure that they are given job permanency, we have to understand the issue from our point of view,' he said.
'To demand that the workers be given government jobs is to add heft to logic of ensuring those who clean human waste...clean the drainages and disposes the garbage...that they continue to do so. As a student of Dr. Ambedkar, we cannot say that forcefully. In a way, we have to oppose it. To support the workers demand because they are Dalits...is a very conventional thinking. We have to end it. Countries around the world have implemented latest technology to perform these tasks...eliminating the need to recruit workers from a particular community,' he said.
TN HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan, Mr Sinthanai Selvan, retired IPS officer, Vanitha Sambath and others participated.

CPI(M) criticises Thirumavalavan for comments on conservancy workers

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and president Thol. Thirumavalavan has stirred a controversy over the issue of job permanency for conservancy workers, questioning whether advocating for their regularisation aligns with the ideals of social justice, or reinforces caste-based occupational roles. Mr. Thirumavalavan, who had previously voiced support for the demands of conservancy workers, appeared to shift his stance. He recently said: 'The correct stand would be to speak against job permanency. Should Dalit children be made to dispose of garbage? If we make their jobs permanent, who will take up those government jobs? How many are ready to do this job? The next generation shouldn't be made to do this work. Ensuring that they don't continue in these roles — that is social justice. Lakhs of people are still cleaning human faeces, scores are disposing of garbage. Should we say, 'Let them do these jobs, make them government employees, and give them pensions?'' His remarks drew criticism from Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary P. Shanmugam, who challenged Mr. Thirumavalavan's position and urged him to clarify his stance. 'He is wrong about this. I know a girl whose parents were conservancy workers. They used their earnings to educate her — she earned a Ph.D. and is now a college professor. If her parents did not have permanent jobs, she might have ended up as a conservancy worker herself. Job security, economic opportunity, and other benefits helped them uplift their daughter,' Mr. Shanmugam said. 'No demand for hereditary continuation' Mr. Shanmugam clarified that no one had demanded the hereditary continuation of conservancy work. 'Nobody is saying that their children must also do this work. We are only saying that those who are doing it now should be given permanent jobs. If they are not made permanent, should they continue as temporary or contract workers? Contract work means lower wages, insecurity, and no protections. Their demands are entirely fair,' he said. Mr. Shanmugam also pointed out that caste-based occupational roles persist due to the influence of Sanatana Dharma. 'A particular community being confined to traditional jobs is because of this society's adherence to Sanatana (Dharma). If we ask conservancy workers to stop doing this job, what alternatives are we providing? Have the Union or State governments laid out any plans? If we advise them to quit garbage disposal, do we have a safety net or better opportunities for them?' he asked.

Rajnath canvasses in support of Radhakrishnan, YSRCP pledges to back NDA candidate

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday (August 18, 2025) gathered support for the National Democratic Alliance's Vice-Presidential candidate, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, reaching out to non-NDA parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). While Mr. Singh has been canvassing in support of Mr. Radhakrishnan, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju has been appointed the latter's polling agent. Mr. Radhakrishnan arrived in Delhi on Monday (August 18, 2025), where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other NDA leaders at Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's residence and will likely be felicitated at the NDA's Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). He is expected to file his nominations for the election on August 20. Soon after meeting with Mr. Radhakrishnan, Mr. Modi posted on X, 'Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. Conveyed my best wishes on his being the NDA's Vice Presidential nominee. His long years of public service and experience across domains will greatly enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and resolve he has always demonstrated.' Mr. Singh, meanwhile, managed to secure the support of the YSRCP after he spoke to party leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. YSRCP Lok Sabha member Maddila Gurumoorthy confirmed that his party, with 11 MPs — four in the Lok Sabha and seven in the Rajya Sabha — will be voting for Mr. Radhakrishnan. The DMK is part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which held a meeting on Monday (August 18, 2025) evening, for its own candidate for the post of Vice-President. Thus, there was not much optimism in the NDA that it would support Mr. Radhakrishnan, who is also from Tamil Nadu. BJD sources said that since Naveen Patnaik was hospitalised on Sunday (August 17, 2025) evening due to dehydration, no meeting as yet has been called by the party, to consider the issue. The Electoral College for the Vice-Presidential election consists of members of both Houses of Parliament, and the NDA is comfortably placed to win the election. The election was necessitated after Mr. Dhankhar, the former Vice-President, resigned midterm citing health reasons, with two years left of his tenure. The election for the Vice-President's post will be held on September 9.

Anbumani Ramadoss urges women to ‘shun' DMK

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday called upon the women to 'shun' the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) if they wanted to protect the future of their children and grandchildren. At a public meeting in Krishnagiri during his 'Rights-retrieval walk', Mr. Anbumani said that liquor and drugs have ruined the future of the upcoming generations. He urged the public to take a call on who should not return to power, more than who should come to power in 2026. Dubbing the DMK rule as 'Company rule', Mr. Anbumani claimed that the Chief Minister hobnobbed with the business class and the rich, but had no time for the poor. Earlier, he visited Enekolputhur where a checkdam was conceived under the Enekolputhur-Thumbalahalli irrigation scheme. Visiting the site of the checkdam, Mr. Anbumani slammed the DMK alleging that the project was close to shelved by the slow pace of works. He threatened to blockade the national highway from Hosur to Bengaluru and Salem and Chennai if the Enekolputhu-Thumbalahalli irrigation scheme works was not sped up. He also questioned the government's land acquisitions for companies, which are unable to provide jobs for the local educated youth. 'Mr. Stalin promised a legislation to ensure 75% of jobs for local youth in companies before elections. What happened to that law?,' he asked. ' 'Singling out Delta Electronics near Enekolputhur, Mr. Anbumani said that there are engineers, graduates, who are not recruited in these companies. Then why bring companies acquiring farm lands and leaving locals jobless,' he asked. Claiming the days of the DMK was numbered, he urged the women to shun the party.
