ABVP defies govt to hold Partition event; Bindu says universities rejected guv's call
ABVP
at the Kasaragod Govt College, Vidhyanagar, as the RSS's student outfit defied state govt's call and organized Partition Horrors Day observance on the campus on Thursday morning .

BVP members organized the event following governor Rajendra Arlekar's circular for observance of the day in state universities on Aug 14, which Raj Bhavan said was based on Union home ministry's instructions. Posters related to the event were pasted on the college campus following which the SFI workers took out a march in protest and raised slogans. The agitators removed some of the posters, leading to a scuffle.
Higher education minister R Bindu, meanwhile, said the academic community 'unconditionally' rejected the governor's call.
In the Kasaragod college, the police dispersed SFI activists. They burned Arlekar in effigy while their ABVP counterparts again put up the posters on the college notice board.
Members of MSF, IUML's student wing, also demanded the posters pasted by ABVP workers be removed. Though the police blocked the MSF march, an altercation between the two outfits followed.
The college principal demanded ABVP remove the posters. Subsequently, they were removed and the situation became normal.
ABVP observed Partition Horrors Day also at Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod, and IHRD College, Kumbala.
ABVP slams disruptions
ABVP condemned attempts by Left activists and KSU workers to disrupt Partition Horrors Day remembrance.
In a statement, ABVP claimed that despite the state govt's refusal, ABVP was able to organize programmes highlighting the Partition horrors.
The fragmentation of Akhand Bharat led to the persecution of millions, the statement said. "The real stories of Partition are being obscured by Congress and communist parties," ABVP state secretary E U Eswaraprasad said.
A talk was convened by the Cusat vice-chancellor where ex-CUK vice-chancellor G Gopakumar addressed the attendees. However, the official said Cusat had not sent any official invitations to the university community.
As chancellor of universities, the governor had issued the directive to the vice-chancellors to organise seminars to commemorate the day and to forward the action plans regarding this. The LDF govt said such programmes need not be held in universities.
Bindu told reporters in Thrissur that there was no tug of war between the state govt and governor. "Everybody must work by giving utmost importance to the interests of the students and of the state.
The vice-chancellors also have pivotal roles to play in these efforts," the minister said.
Bindu said the state govt would implement various development projects to the tune of Rs 6,000 crore in the higher education sector. The academic community has rejected the efforts to disrupt peace when the sector is poised for growth, she said.

ED raids Tamil Nadu Minister I Periyasamy, son in money laundering case
Last Updated: Chennai, Aug 16 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday searched multiple premises linked to Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader I Periyasamy and his MLA son as part of a money laundering investigation, official sources said. The raids were undertaken in Chennai and Dindigul under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The premises of I P Sentilkumar, the son of the 72-year-old minister for rural development, panchayats and panchayat unions, were also searched, according to the sources. Periyasamy represents the Athoor assembly constituency in Dindigul district. There was no immediate comment from Periyasamy or the DMK on the ED action. The money laundering investigation stems from an April order of the Madras High Court, which directed a special court in Dindigul to frame charges against Periyasamy and his family members in connection with a Rs 2.1 crore 'disproportionate" assets case. The order came in response to some criminal revision petitions filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), challenging a special court order discharging Periyasamy and his family members from the case. The HC also directed the special court to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis and complete it within six months. The prosecution's case was that Periyasamy had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 2.1 crore in his name and in the names of his wife, P Suseela and sons P Sentilkumar and P Prabhu, disproportionate to his known sources of income when he was a minister between 2006 and 2010. In Independence Day speech, CM Revanth Reddy urges Centre to clear BC quota bills
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday urged the Centre to approve Telangana's landmark bills providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education and employment. The CM was addressing the gathering after hoisting the national flag during the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at Golconda Fort. Citing figures from the socio-economic survey conducted by the state government, covering 1.12 crore families, Revanth said the findings revealed that BCs constitute 56.33% of the state's population. 'Based on this data, our government has introduced 42% reservation for BCs. The bills passed by the state legislature have been sent to the Centre for approval. On this historic occasion, I urge the Union government to clear the bills,' he said. Revanth underscored his government's commitment to social justice, highlighting that Telangana is the first state in the country to implement Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-categorisation following a Supreme Court verdict, classifying 59 sub-castes into three distinct groups. The chief minister also painted a stark picture of the state's fiscal health, revealing that the Congress government had inherited a staggering debt burden of Rs 8,21,652 crore. This included Rs 6,71,757 crore in borrowings, Rs 40,154 crore in pending employee dues and scheme liabilities, and Rs 1,09,740 crore in obligations under the SC/ST sub-plan, Singareni Collieries, and the power sector, he said. Despite these constraints, the government has serviced Rs 2,20,676 crore in debt — Rs 1,32,498 crore in principal and Rs 88,178 crore in interest — while continuing welfare initiatives, he added. 'Mahalakshmi scheme benefitted women, RTC' Revanth, meanwhile, said that the Mahalakshmi scheme, which provides free bus travel for women, was a success. 'Launched within 48 hours of the government taking charge, the initiative has issued over 200 crore zero-fare tickets, saving women passengers an estimated Rs 6,790 crore collectively,' he highlighted. 'This is not just about free travel — it is about financial independence, educational access, and social mobility for women,' he said, adding that the scheme revitalised the state's transport corporation.
