KZN Transport MEC confirms eight fatalities in Mother's Day crash involving church group
KZN Department of Transport MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has clarified that eight members from the Umkhumbi Wesethembiso Church in Zion died in a tragic accident on the Empangeni N2.
The Department initially reported that nine people had lost their lives.
The accident took place on Mother's Day and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-100 bakkie.
The victims were part of a group of 24 congregants travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba.
Duma said that he is in contact with the church and family members of the victims, largely mothers, of yesterday morning's car accident.
"From the initial nine fatalities reported yesterday, we wish to confirm that only eight church members of Umkhumbi Wesethembiso Church in Zion, headquartered in Hluhluwe, died in that horrific accident that left the whole country in shock.
"Unfortunately, the dismembered body parts resulted in the miscalculation of the victims. Counseling will be provided to the emergency personnel and to surviving members of the church," Duma said.

Department head Nkosinathi Ngcobo laid a charge of fraud at the Durban Central Police Station on Thursday morning. The charge followed reports that an individual had allegedly been collecting money from educators in exchange for false promises of permanent teaching positions. 'Zero tolerance' 'We, as the Department of Education, are fully aware of this and condemn this fraudulent behaviour in the strongest terms,' said Ngcobo. 'We have zero tolerance for fraud and corruption, and we are committed to rooting out any individuals who seek to exploit our education system for personal gain.' While the department did not reveal the identity of the alleged scammer, it confirmed the suspect is believed to be an educator. The agency responded to a post on X (formerly Twitter) that falsely advertised positions for 'Finance Clerks 2025' and 'Grant Administrators (x21)', claiming salaries of R22 412 per month with no prior work experience required. Both posters directed applicants to a website not associated with Sassa or any government department. The posts listed locations such as Sassa's head office in Pretoria and vaguely referenced 'selected Sassa offices in South Africa.' Sassa said in a post that it is aware of the fake adverts online. For accurate information, the agency urged the public to visit its official website. 'Please note that all official Sassa vacancies are advertised only through our official website and trusted government platforms,' it said. Boyfriend of slain Soweto woman remanded in custody after body found under bed
The community of Protea South, Soweto, is demanding justice following the murder of 20-year-old Ithabeleng Motleleng, allegedly by her boyfriend. The body of Ithabeleng Motleleng (20) was discovered by her family and police in Protea South, Soweto, on Friday, 30 May, after she had been missing for about a week. Her body was wrapped up and tucked under the bed in the shack she shared with her boyfriend, Zacharia Nonyane (27). 'I last saw her on Sunday [25 May]. She was [coming] from the mall where she said she was sent by her boyfriend to buy some KFC,' said Motleleng's mother, Francina Nyedimane (56). She said that the following morning, Nonyane came to her home and asked where Motleleng was. Nyedimane said maybe she was at a computer class at a nearby hall. On Tuesday, Nonyane came to the house again and asked where Motleleng was. Family members told him that he should know Motleleng's whereabouts, as they lived together. 'On Wednesday, he called, and when he called, he was fighting on the phone. He then told me that he last saw my daughter on Monday and he kicked her out because they had a fight,' said Nyedimane. 'I then asked him to post her in the local group as a missing person. I told him that if I get nothing on the post comments, I will go to the police station and report her as a missing person, and he said that's fine. 'When police came to question him on Monday, he fled. Then on Friday morning, I went to him and asked him why he was running away from the police after our agreement.' Nyedimane said Nonyane told her that he ran away because he had outstanding matters with the police. Nonyane was arrested on Friday after the police searched his shack and made the shocking discovery. 'My daughter was naked when we found her. When I asked the accused where her clothes were, he told me that they were drenched in blood, so he sent them off with the waste truck,' said Nyedimane. 'He did not say why he killed my daughter. He just kept saying sorry.' Nyedimane burst into tears and said, 'This boy has separated my daughter from her two-year-old child. Next year, when others celebrate Mother's Day, my daughter will be lying in her grave.' Motleleng's sister, Nthabiseng Nyedimane, said, 'We are deeply hurt as a family. We did not deserve this. Our sister did not deserve this. We want justice for her.' Court hearing Nonyane's first appearance in the Protea Magistrates' Court, on Monday, 2 May, was postponed. A court official told the community members who attended to support the family and demand justice that an outstanding procedure had to be concluded. When Nonyane appeared in court again on Tuesday, he denied having any previous convictions or that there were any protection or restraining orders against him The magistrate, Tshepiso Maepa, advised him that he was charged with a Schedule 5 offence and would not be granted bail unless an application for consideration of bail was made to the court. He was remanded in custody until 6 August. Community members have alleged that Nonyane committed other heinous crimes. In response, police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said, 'The suspect in the Protea case [Nonyane] currently does not have any [other] cases against him, but the investigation team is still profiling him.' Protesters target mother Community members protested on Monday outside the clinic where Nonyane's mother, Oralia Nonyane (55), works. They demanded she be fired and that her family be evicted from Protea South. They partially burned her son's shack, which is on the opposite side of the street from his family's home. A woman who was renting a portion of the shack, had to hurriedly pack her belongings and leave the area as she feared for her safety and that of her baby. Soon after she left, the rest of the shack was dismantled. Oralia Nonyane insisted she knew nothing about her son's deeds. She added that her own daughter was suffering abuse at the hands of her boyfriend, and that she had a protection order against him and was begging her daughter to walk away. 'I can't defend wrong. I myself asked him if he did it, but his response was, 'Mama, I'm sorry.' I said, 'If you killed her, you are cruel,'' said Nonyane. DM

Residents blame metro for poor cemetery conditions
Outrage is mounting in the north of Pretoria as residents are at their wits' end with the Tshwane metro allegedly neglecting various cemeteries' upkeep. The resting places of loved ones have been described as sites riddled with long grass, weeds, and crime. Heatherdale Cemetery, in particular, has come under fire, with grieving families describing it as a jungle of disrespect. Ward 98 councillor Dana Wannenburg condemned the metro for failing to maintain these sacred spaces, despite ongoing complaints and public promises. 'It's not just about overgrown grass, it's about respect. People pay rates and taxes expecting basic services, not to bury their loved ones in filth and fear,' he said. Residents visiting Heatherdale Cemetery said they now have to bring their own gardening tools to clear burial plots. Tombstones are obscured by knee-high grass and overgrown shrubs, making it nearly impossible to locate graves. 'It's heartbreaking. We couldn't find my grandmother's grave on Mother's Day. We wandered around like strangers in a place that should feel sacred,' said Marco Washington, a local resident. Community members have also raised safety concerns over the thick vegetation providing hiding places for criminals and drug users. 'We've seen people using the cemetery as a dumping ground and a drug den. 'You don't know what or who is waiting behind the bushes. It's no longer safe to visit alone.' Mosquitoes and snakes have also become a hazard, with elderly mourners particularly vulnerable to bites and falls. Despite a commitment made by the mayor and the mayoral committee at a public meeting on May 21 to prioritise cleaning of the Heatherdale Cemetery, no action has been taken. 'We were told help was on the way. We're still waiting. 'How long must we beg to be treated with dignity?' Wannenburg has called on the municipality to take urgent action to clean and maintain all cemeteries. Residents have started logging complaints through the metro's online portal and emailing municipal departments directly, in the hope that co-ordinated pressure will lead to change. 'This is not a luxury, it's a necessity. Our cemeteries must be places of peace, not danger. The city must step up, not only out of duty, but out of decency,' he said.
