Royal Caribbean cruiser warns of big mistake that cancels cruises
It's easy to make a few mistakes when planning a cruise, especially your first one.
But costly errors that first-time cruisers often make like not booking cruise extras in advance or failing to budget for gratuities or other onboard expenses aren't the most significant ones you could make.

The biggest cruise mistakes you can make are serious slip-ups that can get your cruise canceled.
One of these mistakes is a major oversight that can easily happen to anyone, like one first-time cruiser who frantically turned to the Royal Caribbean community on Reddit for advice after making it.
After planning an upcoming anniversary celebration cruise a year in advance, the first-time cruiser missed the final payment deadline for their cruise.
For most Royal Caribbean cruises, passengers must make the final payment of their balance at least 70 days prior to the sailing date.

"I forgot to pay my final balance on my Royal Caribbean [cruise]," Norie08 wrote in the Reddit community. "Finally, I remembered it... but now I have received notice of cancellation of my cruise. Can I still beg them I'm going to pay? I keep calling them, but nobody answers. I'm so sad!"
Luckily, the cruise community responded with some promising information.
"I worked for Royal. They will reinstate within 49 hours. Keep calling. We had people working around the clock. You have to wait your turn for you mess up though," barefootincozumel replied.
Later, Norie08 reported back that they did, in fact, get their reservation reinstated once they reached the cruise line and made the payment. However, they lost some of their cruise perks because of their mistake.

Other cruisers shared similar experiences, and some even reported having to pay more or book a different stateroom category. In some cases, a canceled reservation can't be reinstated, which means you lose your deposit and have to rebook, often at a higher cruise fare.
"I did the exact same thing and just called them and had them uncancel it. I ended up paying more but I see it as a natural consequence of my own forgetfulness," Mathematician_Soggy explained.
Your forgetfulness may also mean dealing with the hassle of rebooking any cruise extras you added, too.
"Same thing happened to me and it took 2 hours on phone to fix it. I was sick to my stomach. Remember that everything you added (drink package, specialty dining, excursions) have to be rebooked too," jayaybee21 pointed out.

In the Reddit thread, a few passengers also shared tips to help cruisers avoid missing the final cruise payment deadline.
Most cruise lines offer some sort of flexible payment option that allows you to schedule payments in installments to pay for your cruise over time. For Royal Caribbean cruises specifically, some passengers have discovered that using this tool even to schedule one small payment will make sure that your final payment is automatically drafted on the due date.
"Pro tip: schedule payments. Just schedule a payment of like $1 or whatever and the payment scheduler will automatically put the remaining balance as a payment on the last day, then you won't have to worry if you forget," insidmal explained.

Other passengers pointed out how using a good travel agent to book your cruise can provide extra peace of mind as your final payment deadline nears.
"This is a tough lesson to learn. I highly suggest using a really good travel agent for future sailings. A good travel agent is paid directly by the cruise line and often will save you money on your sailing by getting you both group rates and additional onboard credit. My agent emails, calls, and texts prior to final payment date to ensure everything is settled up," GermantownTiger wrote.

Yeah, I mean, this is something that, you know, unless there's some rule put in place, some kind of blanket regulation or agreement across the industry, that's going to continue to rear its head, right? We had The New York Times obviously suing OpenAI, but then they're also working with AI companies. So, you know, it's this constant back and forth of, can you train data without asking for the owner of that data for permission? And so the larger thinking is that AI companies just went ahead and did that overall. And now that there's backlash, now they have to figure out who they can work with and who they can't work with. Reddit is a huge repository of knowledge, right? You have, not that it's all accurate. Don't get me wrong, look, you can go on Reddit to find out how to change your tires, but you can't go on there to figure out, I don't know, advanced math, or maybe you can, I don't know. I'm not using it for that. Bird IDs are great on there. But it's a huge repository for, for data for AI companies to then have access to that to train on is massive. So you understand why they want access to it, but you can't just go in someone's house without knocking first, you know what I'm saying? By the way, Merlin for bird IDs. Yes. Excellent. Reddit sues AI company Anthropic for allegedly ‘scraping' user comments to train chatbot Claude
Social media platform Reddit sued the artificial intelligence company Anthropic on Wednesday, alleging that it is illegally 'scraping' the comments of millions of Reddit users to train its chatbot Claude. Reddit claims that Anthropic has used automated bots to access Reddit's content despite being asked not to do so, and 'intentionally trained on the personal data of Reddit users without ever requesting their consent.' Anthropic said in a statement that it disagreed with Reddit's claims 'and will defend ourselves vigorously.' Reddit filed the lawsuit Wednesday in California Superior Court in San Francisco, where both companies are based. 'AI companies should not be allowed to scrape information and content from people without clear limitations on how they can use that data,' said Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer, in a statement Wednesday. Reddit has previously entered licensing agreements with Google, OpenAI and other companies that are paying to be able to train their AI systems on the public commentary of Reddit's more than 100 million daily users. Those agreements 'enable us to enforce meaningful protections for our users, including the right to delete your content, user privacy protections, and preventing users from being spammed using this content,' Lee said. The licensing deals also helped the 20-year-old online platform raise money ahead of its Wall Street debut as a publicly traded company last year. Anthropic was formed by former OpenAI executives in 2021 and its flagship Claude chatbot remains a key competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT. While OpenAI has close ties to Microsoft, Anthropic's primary commercial partner is Amazon, which is using Claude to improve its widely used Alexa voice assistant. Much like other AI companies, Anthropic has relied heavily on websites such as Wikipedia and Reddit that are deep troves of written materials that can help teach an AI assistant the patterns of human language. In a 2021 paper co-authored by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei — cited in the lawsuit — researchers at the company identified the subreddits, or subject-matter forums, that contained the highest quality AI training data, such as those focused on gardening, history, relationship advice or thoughts people have in the shower. Anthropic in 2023 argued in a letter to the U.S. Copyright Office that the 'way Claude was trained qualifies as a quintessentially lawful use of materials,' by making copies of information to perform a statistical analysis of a large body of data. It is already battling a lawsuit from major music publishers alleging that Claude regurgitates the lyrics of copyrighted songs. But Reddit's lawsuit is different from others brought against AI companies because it doesn't allege copyright infringement. Manager Says Their 'Star Performer' Seems Disengaged. Saying, They 'Aren't Overworked At All' Didn't Sit Well With People—'You Have No Idea'
A Reddit post from a self-described seasoned manager sparked a wave of frustration last week after they complained about a top employee who no longer seems as engaged at work. The post, shared in the r/managers subreddit, described the 'star performer' as showing a 'laid back attitude,' arriving late to meetings, and needing follow-ups to complete tasks. 'They try to convince me that they are looking for a promotion but I don't see that in action,' the manager wrote. Dozens of commenters saw this as out-of-touch and dismissive. One person wrote, 'A calendar only shows scheduled meetings. If that is their job, to sit in meetings and do nothing else, then OP is right about them not being heavily loaded.' Another put it more bluntly: 'WTF is that about? Non-meeting time is when people get sh*t done. You have no idea how busy he is.' The manager said they were pushing for a promotion for the employee but were reconsidering after noticing the drop in enthusiasm. That logic didn't sit well either. Many others chimed in with personal stories of being high performers, only to be passed over, underpaid, or burdened with extra work while coworkers did far less: 'My reward for a job well done was... a 3% raise, and more work.' Another summed it up this way: 'Star performers become tired of being star performers when they're over-managed and underpaid.' Another wrote, 'This is what happened in my last role. When I got another job and gave notice they tried to match the offer. No go.' Several said the worker in question is likely already job hunting. 'You're going to lose this employee,' one person warned. Others echoed that it's probably too late to fix the situation without a significant change: 'You should have taken care of the star while they were shining. They are now burnt out and [unrewarded].'The thread also surfaced common frustrations around workplace inequality. One user said, 'I perform minor miracles at my job, and not a word of thanks... Somebody else documents a simple process, and they're treated like the Second Coming.' As for the solution, many advised the manager to talk directly to the employee, figure out what they want, and act fast. Otherwise, they argued, the company is set to lose a valuable employee who simply got tired of giving 110% for a 3% raise.
