Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre turns 20 amid industry shift

KUALA LUMPUR: The events industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, and client expectations are evolving in tandem, according to John Burke, general manager of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre).
Looking ahead, Burke emphasised that the Centre's success over the next two decades will hinge on its ability to remain agile and responsive to change.
"Events are changing. Client needs are changing. We have evolved our event support services as event formats change. We have refurbished and redesigned many parts of the event space to enhance and meet new client needs. And there are more developments to come," he said.
Since opening its doors in 2005, the Centre, a purpose-built venue for conferences, exhibitions, and events, has hosted over 22,000 events and welcomed 29 million visitors, contributing RM12.6 billion to Malaysia's economy.
Sustainability has become a core focus of the Centre's operations.
"We have gone into overdrive on our sustainability efforts," Burke said.
He noted that the Centre is now powered entirely by green energy, 100 per cent of food waste is composted, and 70 per cent of the food and beverage offerings are sourced locally within Malaysia.
The Centre recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a lively reception attended by industry stakeholders, partners, and clients. Themed "Celebrating the Past 20. Shaping the Next 20", the event highlighted the Centre's evolution as a platform for global dialogue, economic progress, and cultural exchange.
Among the guests was Datuk Mohd Salem Kailany, group chief executive officer of the KLCC Group of Companies.
"Some of the team members of the Centre have been here from day one. It is their anniversary too," Burke added in tribute to the longstanding staff.
The Centre is owned by Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd, which in turn, is part of PETRONAS.

HSS Engineers clears Baghdad Metro hurdle, stock poised for 117pct upside

KUALA LUMPUR: HSS Engineers Bhd has cleared a major hurdle in its Baghdad Metro project, removing what analysts called "a key overhang" that had dragged its share price down 47 per cent over the past year. CGS International Research maintained its "Add" call on the stock but trimmed its target price to RM1.38 from RM1.50 to factor in delays in the project. This represents an upside potential of nearly 117 per cent from Friday's close of 63.5 sen. CGS International said the stock is trading at five times its projected 2026 earnings, the lowest since 2022. It noted that HSS Engineers received the completion certificate on July 16 for the first 10 per cent milestone payment, worth about RM10 million, from the mayoralty of Baghdad. This paves the way for disbursement once the country's planning ministry approval process and United States dollar arrangements are completed. "We view this positively as this has been the key overhang for the share price," CGS International Research said in a note, adding that the payment is expected within 21 to 41 days. The milestone is expected to boost HSS Engineers' earnings in the second half of 2025 and turn operating cash flow positive in the fourth quarter, after a negative RM12.6 million in the first quarter. "With all the requirements met in order to receive this first payment, performance bond, opening of branch office and registration of local company, we expect the subsequent milestone payments to be much quicker," it added. As at June, HSS Engineers' project management consultancy work for the Baghdad Metro was 45 per cent complete and is now targeted for completion by end-2025, with construction supervision services to begin in the second half of 2026. The Baghdad Metro project accounts for about 30 per cent of the group's RM2.07 billion order book and carries a gross profit margin of between 40 and 45 per cent, above the 25 to 30 per cent margins of its other projects.

Malaysia's latest corporate earnings season kicks off

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's quarterly corporate earnings season is underway, with listed companies on Bursa Malaysia beginning to release their second quarter (Q2) results throughout August. Investors and traders are keenly watching the financial disclosures to recalibrate their strategies amid a mix of macroeconomic resilience and evolving sector-specific dynamics. Rakuten Trade said early indicators point to continued strength in banking, technology, consumer and utilities. Select counters are expected to deliver resilient earnings, supported by stable demand, cost optimisation and regional tailwinds. Banks are likely to benefit from sustained interest income strength. Meanwhile, technology stocks especially those linked to global semiconductor and AI value chains are showing early signs of recovery. "Our initial review of Q2 results and guidance from key players shows encouraging signs in financial services and selected export-oriented technology stocks," said Kenny Yee, head of research at Rakuten Trade. "With the ringgit remaining relatively stable and consumer sentiment improving, we also anticipate a moderate rebound in consumer-facing stocks. "Traders should closely track updates from banking heavyweights, large-cap tech, and staple consumer names to position for medium-term growth," Yee added. Among early reporters this quarter, Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd posted a 15.16 per cent year-on-year decline in Q2FY25 net profit to RM140.3 million. This was attributed to higher tax expenses, startup losses from its dairy operations, and softer revenue. Westports Holdings Bhd's Q2FY25 net profit grew 15 per cent YoY to RM231 million thanks to higher throughput. Axis-REIT's net income rose 20.5 per cent YoY to RM46.9 million, driven by higher property income. Meanwhile, Hartalega Holdings Bhd's Q1 2026 net profit dipped 60 per cent YoY to RM12.6 million due to weaker average selling prices, stronger ringgit and lower capacity utilisation. With investor sentiment expected to fluctuate throughout August, Rakuten Trade encourages market participants to leverage its digital-first trading platform to capture opportunities across both local and foreign markets. "We expect this earnings season to stir market activity, creating timely opportunities for traders. "As Malaysia's first fully digital equity broker, Rakuten Trade offers the most competitive brokerage fees in the market, with fees starting as low as RM1 per trade," said Kazumasa Mise, chief executive officer of Rakuten Trade.

72 Sabah dilapidated school upgrades completed

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani Text Size: PITAS: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said 72 of 111 dilapidated school upgrade projects in Sabah have been completed at a cost of RM359 million, with 37 more worth RM631 million under construction. One project worth RM12.6 million is in the design stage and another worth RM54 million is at the procurement stage, bringing the total to nearly RM1 billion. During a visit to SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas, Ahmad said all works are via open tender to ensure timely or early completion. The RM27 million SMK Pinggan-Pinggan project, 78pc complete, includes two hostel blocks, warden houses, a dining hall for 400 students, and support facilities. The new hostel, to be completed in December 2025, will replace one located 1.3km away, which forces students to walk along busy roads without pedestrian paths. Ahmad said it will improve safety, reduce absenteeism, and provide better living conditions. He added that these projects reflect the Madani government's commitment to improving rural education infrastructure and narrowing the urban-rural education gap. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
