Area 2 Farms Selects Fairfax City for Second Location, Launches Innovative Urban Farm

Fairfax City Economic Development-backed initiative transforms long-vacant site into a sustainable urban agriculture hub at Fairfax Circle
FAIRFAX CITY, Va., Aug. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Fairfax City Economic Development (FCED) and Area 2 Farms have announced a new partnership to bring a sustainable urban farm to Fairfax City. The Northern Virginia-based startup, which is reimagining the future of agriculture through hyper-local, soil-based farming, will open its newest location at 9571 Fairfax Boulevard by the end of the year.
Made possible through a zoning amendment approved by City Council in 2024 and a support grant from FCED, this project includes a 10-year lease for the property, $25,000 in Fairfax City Economic Development Authority (EDA) funding, and a commitment to transform the space through adaptive reuse. As part of the agreement, Area 2 Farms will invest in exterior improvements, including a public-facing mural that will enhance the visual identity and vibrancy of the Fairfax Circle intersection. The city's support builds on a foundation of strategic investment in sustainable agriculture and food system innovation, as exemplified by the EDA's $7,000 matching contribution to secure an AFID Planning Grant in 2024. This initiative not only revitalizes a long-vacant commercial site but also advances the city's goals to promote sustainability, pedestrian activity, and innovative investment in a key commercial activity center.
'It's ironic that we had to amend our zoning code to allow this type of agricultural use in a city and a region that was once rolling fields of farmland,' said Fairfax City Mayor Catherine Read. 'It demonstrates the need for local governments to regularly reimagine land use in ways that support our priorities today and into the future. Our community cares about issues of environmental sustainability and educating consumers about the sources of the foods they eat. Area 2 Farms brings us a project that aligns with our core values on many levels and is a welcome addition to our city.'
The transformation of this location exemplifies Area 2 Farms' commitment to deconstructing the traditional food supply chain and reallocating underutilized spaces within communities. By bringing farms directly into urban areas, Area 2 Farms addresses critical issues such as supply chain fragility and lack of transparency in food production, and stronger relationships between farmers and the people they serve.
'We are incredibly excited to bring Area 2 Farms to Fairfax and to partner with a city that shares our vision,' said Oren Falkowitz, Founder and CEO of Area 2 Farms. 'This project perfectly embodies our mission to 'move the farm, not the food,' turning an underutilized space into a thriving hub for fresh, healthy produce and community engagement. The leadership shown by FCED officials in facilitating this project ushers in a new chapter of abundance for the local community.'
Following the success of its pilot farm in Arlington, VA—which has delivered over 20,000 harvests, welcomed over 1,000 customers, and hosted 1,500+ student visits the Fairfax City location marks the next step in the company's mission to connect people, places, and food in a meaningful way. Area 2 Farms also plans to deepen its community engagement through partnerships with Fairfax City public schools and local civic organizations.
The new Fairfax City farm will provide direct access to fresh, local, organic produce through Area 2 Farms' Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Community members will be able to enjoy a year-round supply of greens, microgreens, root vegetables, herbs, and specialty items, harvested at peak ripeness, often just minutes before they are taken home. The farm will also be coupled with Area 2 Farms' first farm stand, which will allow the local community to purchase fresh food, specialty items, and other value-added products that complement their offering.
'This project is a testament to what's possible when vision meets partnership,' said Christopher Bruno, CEO and Director of Fairfax City Economic Development. 'We didn't just fill a vacant lot; we challenged everyone to think differently about how space, sustainability, and community intersect. In doing so, FCED is showing that even a small city can lead with bold ideas. The result is more than an investment in a single property. This project represents an investment in education, health, the creation of place, and the kinds of collaborations that push the boundaries of what local government and business can achieve.

Air Canada flight attendants walk off job, picket lines set up at airports

People hold placards as a strike begins after the union representing Air Canada's 10,000 flight attendants failed to reach an agreement with the airline, at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, Quebec, Canada August 16, 2025. REUTERS/Peter McCabe TORONTO/OTTAWA (Reuters) -Hundreds of Air Canada employees formed picket lines outside major Canadian airports on Saturday, hours after unionized flight attendants walked off the job in a contract dispute that has disrupted travel for tens of thousands of passengers. The strike, which started just before 1 a.m. EDT (0500 GMT), had forced Canada's largest airline to suspend the majority of its 700 daily flights, affecting more than 100,000 travelers who were forced to find alternative flights or stay put. As of Saturday morning, there were no bargaining sessions scheduled between the two sides, which have held on-and-off negotiations for months. The Canadian Union of Public Employees, representing more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants, confirmed the stoppage in a social media post. It is the first strike by Air Canada flight attendants since 1985. Outside Toronto Pearson International Airport - the country's busiest - hundreds of cabin crew waved flags, banners and picket signs. Union officials called on members to assemble outside all of the country's major airports, including in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. Montreal-based Air Canada said the suspended flights included those operated by its budget arm, Air Canada Rouge. The stoppage would affect about 130,000 customers a day, the carrier said in a statement. Flights by Air Canada's regional affiliates - Air Canada Jazz and PAL Airlines - will operate as usual. "Air Canada is strongly advising affected customers not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed ticket on an airline other than Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge," the airline said. WAGE DISPUTE The dispute between the union and the airline centers on wages. Attendants are currently paid only when their plane is moving. The union is seeking compensation for time spent on theground between flights and when helping passengers board. The union has said Air Canada offered to compensate flight attendants for some work that is now unpaid but only at 50% of their hourly rate. The carrier had offered a 38% increase in total compensation for flight attendants over four years, with a 25% raise in the first year, which the union said was insufficient. The impact of a strike will ripple far beyond Canada. Air Canada is the busiest foreign carrier servicing the U.S. by number of scheduled flights. While passengers have generally voiced support for the flight attendants on social media, Canadian businesses - already reeling from a trade dispute with the U.S. - have urged the federal government to impose binding arbitration on both sides, ending the strike. The Canada Labour Code gives Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu the right to ask the country's Industrial Relations Board to impose binding arbitration in the interests of protecting the economy. Air Canada has asked Prime Minister Mark Carney's minority Liberal government to act, but the union says it wants a negotiated solution, as binding arbitration would take pressure off the airline. Hajdu has repeatedly urged the two sides to return to the bargaining table. In a note to clients, analysts at financial services firm TD Cowen urged the carrier to "extend an olive branch to end the impasse," adding that investors are worried that any cost savings on labor would be outweighed by lost earnings in the airline's most important quarter. "We think it would be best for AC to achieve labor peace," the note said. "Not budging on negotiations risks being a Pyrrhic victory." Sabah UDA Carnival With BizFrancais Pernas A Platform To Strengthen Entrepreneurship Ecosystem For MSMEs In Sabah

BUSINESS PENAMPANG, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The three-day UDA Carnival with BizFrancais Pernas, ending tomorrow at Buhavan Square here, has the potential to be a catalyst in strengthening entrepreneurship development and opening up more opportunities for Sabah-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to expand their markets. The participation of 70 entrepreneurs from BizFrancais Pernas and UDA, representing various business backgrounds, has made the carnival an inclusive and relevant platform for all segments of society. Visitors have been able to enjoy a wide range of products and services, with sales targeted at RM4.25 million over the three-day event. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick said the initiative aligns with his ministry's aspiration to provide a more conducive market access environment in support of the country's entrepreneurial sector. This includes developing strategic networks and strengthening branding towards producing competitive, innovative, and sustainable entrepreneurs. He added that the strategic collaboration between UDA and Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (Pernas) reflects strong synergy among the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) agencies in empowering local entrepreneurs, not just in major cities, but extending down to grassroots levels. 'This carnival is not just a sales platform for entrepreneurs, but more importantly, it allows KUSKOP agencies to directly provide services and support to current and aspiring entrepreneurs,' he said during the carnival's opening ceremony today. Ewon also stated that under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), KUSKOP will focus on empowering the development of the franchise, MSME, cooperative, and social enterprise sectors in Sabah to strengthen the socio-economic standing of local entrepreneurs through business growth opportunities. President and CEO of UDA Holdings Bhd, Johari Shukri Jamil, said in his speech that the collaboration between UDA and Pernas is in line with the Blue Ocean Strategy, combining resources, expertise, and networks to create greater impact for the benefit of entrepreneurs and the local community. Since 2022, he noted, the UDA Carnival has been one of the agency's main platforms for reaching out to communities and supporting local entrepreneurs. 'This year, the collaboration with Pernas through the BizFrancais programme reflects our joint commitment to strengthening the support network for entrepreneurs. The BizFrancais programme, organised by Pernas since 2019, aims to promote the franchise industry and provide direct exposure to franchise opportunities in the country,' he said. Johari also reiterated UDA's commitment to supporting KUSKOP's efforts in strengthening the national entrepreneurial ecosystem, in line with its mandate as a property developer and provider of competitive commercial spaces.

Mega projects must serve people, not turn cities into concrete jungles, says Anwar

IPOH, Aug 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today cautioned against development that strips away local culture and identity. Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the RM6.25 billion Ipoh Sentral Development Project here, he said developers must be able to balance the pursuit of progress with public needs and preserve heritage. 'What I mean is that we don't want buildings that may appear grand and impressive, but are culturally barren. 'At times, in our eagerness to pursue development, we simply copy ideas from elsewhere, even though we know the setting and environment may not necessarily be compatible, whether in terms of climate, social values, or cultural context,' he said. Citing KL Sentral as an example, he said the mega transportation hub in Kuala Lumpur 'is merely a basic reference point, but not a good example to emulate'. 'So, we want something different when envisioning Ipoh, with its own unique landmarks. 'What makes it special is the cultural vibrancy rooted in our heritage, yet it remains modern, embracing new technologies, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, while still preserving our values and culture,' he added. Anwar praised project developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) for reflecting the Madani concept and urged stakeholders to refine the plans further. 'In the coming months, I request the Perak Menteri Besar, the Transport Minister, the City Council, the Housing and Local Government Ministry, and the Education Ministry to study all these aspects. 'Even though the plans have already been drawn up, we must see if improvements can still be made. 'If we can enhance it further, then Ipoh Sentral can become one of the best and most holistic development models in our country, a project we can proudly showcase,' he said. Designed as a Transit-Oriented Development, Ipoh Sentral will link directly to Kuala Lumpur and Penang Sentral, integrating rail, bus, taxi, e-hailing, cycling and pedestrian networks to promote walkability and reduce car use. The 67-acre project will be developed in two phases: Phase 1 will focus on landscaping, recreational upgrades, and a public park with a mosque alongside existing places of worship; Phase 2 will introduce mixed-use towers with apartments, offices, retail, hotels and community amenities. Expected to create up to 9,000 jobs during construction and over 10,000 upon completion, the project is a joint venture between Railway Assets Holding Sdn Bhd, Silver Smart Sdn Bhd (Perak State Government), and MRCB.
