Oman hosts IUCN Green List workshop

Observer16-04-2025

MUSCAT: A two-day workshop titled 'Green List Reserves', organised by the Environment Authority in coordination with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), was held at the Grand Hyatt Muscat. The initiative aims to introduce the internationally recognised IUCN Green List standards to Oman's conservation and protected area communities.
Designed to enhance excellence in the management of nature reserves, the IUCN Green List evaluates protected areas across 17 criteria and 50 indicators, including governance, planning, management and conservation outcomes.
Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, emphasised that Oman's move to nominate several reserves for Green List status reflects its commitment to biodiversity protection and sustainable development goals. 'It is a culmination of ongoing efforts to elevate the efficiency of nature reserve management to meet international standards,' he said.
Currently, Oman has 31 declared nature reserves that span diverse ecosystems - coasts, deserts, plains, mountains and valleys. The workshop focuses on three nominated sites: Arabian Oryx Reserve, Daymaniyat Islands and Saleel National Park. Saleel has already entered the first phase of the Green List application process.

Eng Suleiman al Akhzami, Director-General of Nature Reserves, described the Green List as a global benchmark in conservation management. It promotes active participation of both government bodies and local communities.
Natalia Boulad, Programme Manager at IUCN West Asia, explained that the Green List is more than a certification - it is a holistic standard encompassing good governance, effective management and measurable conservation impact. 'It's about showing you're on the right path and encouraging a long-term commitment to excellence,' she said.
Workshop sessions include visual presentations, knowledge exchange with international experts and discussions on preparing nomination files for global Green List consideration. The event aligns with Oman Vision 2040, reinforcing Oman's dedication to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
With over 15,000 species of terrestrial and marine flora and fauna - many rare or endemic - Oman continues to prioritise environmental stewardship through global collaborations like the IUCN Green List.

Oman marks World Oceans Day, renews pledge to protect marine environment

Muscat - On the occasion of World Oceans Day (which falls on 8 June every year), the Sultanate of Oman highlights efforts on protecting the marine environment and promoting ecological sustainability. Oman is considered a leading country in this field. Oman boasts a long coastline of approximately 3,165 kilometres that makes the country home to a rich biodiversity of coral reefs, seabirds, fish and rare and endangered species like sea turtles. Oman is actively seeking to preserve its marine environment through a set of elaborate initiatives and policies. The Environment Authority was established to act as the body responsible for developing environmental strategies, notably in the field of protecting oceans and coasts. The Environment Authority conducts studies and research aimed at understanding common environmental challenges posed by the marine environment like pollution, overfishing and climate change. As part of its efforts to promote marine sustainability, Oman keeps implementing a variety of projects, including the "Artificial Coral Reefs" project, which aims to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs, enhance biodiversity, support sustainable fishing and protect coastal areas. Oman has also established a number of marine reserves like Ras Al Jinz Marine Reserve, the Daymaniyat Islands Marine Reserve, and Al Khor Marine Reserve, which all provide safe sanctuary for endangered marine species. Oman's efforts also include awareness campaigns and workshops aimed at raising and developing the knowledge of citizens and residents about the importance of preserving marine life. In particular, such initiatives target younger generations, encouraging them to actively contribute to environment conservation efforts. Oman also accords attention to international cooperation in the field of marine environment protection. This attention takes shape in Oman's regular participation in relavamt global programmes and agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity. Through this comprehensive approach,—which combines effective policies, innovative projects and community engagement—the Sultanate of Oman sets an exemplary model for marine environment protection.

Oman to mark World Oceans Day, focus on marine conservation

Muscat – Oman will join countries around the world in observing World Oceans Day on June 8 with a focus on protecting marine ecosystems and raising awareness on oceans' role in sustaining life. This year's theme – Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us – highlights the significance of oceans in maintaining ecological balance and supporting global livelihoods. Led by Environment Authority, Oman's participation includes a range of activities aimed at promoting marine conservation. These include beach clean-ups, ocean waste removal campaigns and educational initiatives designed to engage local communities. Oman has launched several long-term marine protection projects. One of the key efforts is the annual Marine Pollutant Monitoring Project, which tracks levels of contaminants such as heavy metals and hydrocarbons along the sultanate's coastline, from Musandam to Dhofar. Monitoring is focused on areas near industrial zones and ports which are considered environmentally sensitive. Environment Authority is also conducting targeted conservation programmes for rare marine species. A notable initiative is the study of loggerhead turtle nesting on Masirah Island, carried out in collaboration with international partners. The research aims to identify factors affecting nesting success and develop sustainable beach management practices. Another major effort is the Arabian Sea Humpback Whale Tracking Project, which monitors one of the world's rarest whale populations. The data gathered supports development of conservation strategies for the endangered species. Oman's broader environmental policy includes development of a National Biodiversity Strategy and regular field surveys to assess the status of flora and fauna, with particular attention to endangered species. The authority enforces environmental legislation, including the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Law and the Natural Reserves Law, and oversees compliance with rules regulating the discharge of liquid waste into the marine environment. 'These efforts reflect Oman's commitment to environmental stewardship and the sustainable use of marine resources,' the authority stated. The initiatives are aligned with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritises ecological sustainability alongside national development.
