Odisha: Pradhan urges Yadav to develop Industrial, coal, heat-affected areas as urban forests
Bhubaneswar, May 28 (UNI) Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, to take immediate steps to develop urban forests under the 'Nagar Van Yojana' (NBY) in Odisha's industrial, coal mining, and heat-affected regions.
During a meeting with Yadav in New Delhi on Wednesday, Pradhan proposed the development of urban forests in the industrial belt of Sambalpur–Jharsuguda–Brajrajnagar, the coal mining areas of Angul–Dhenkanal, and the heat-prone regions of Titilagarh and Balangir under the NBY initiative.
Pradhan also sought Yadav's personal intervention to develop the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary as part of a tiger reserve, alongside the proposed expansion of the Sambalpur Zoo.
In his letter to the Environment Minister, Pradhan noted that the above-mentioned regions are experiencing extreme heat as a result of climate change, which is adversely impacting public health. He praised the Ministry's Urban Forest Scheme, designed to support the development of green spaces in areas managed by municipal corporations, councils, and urban local bodies (ULBs).
Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'One Earth, Many Efforts' vision, Pradhan emphasised that the establishment of urban forests would significantly contribute to environmental sustainability and the overall well-being of communities.
Highlighting the Prime Minister's call for "Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)", Pradhan reiterated the importance of both individual and collective action in addressing climate challenges.
He also proposed the launch of a massive public awareness campaign to encourage community participation in tree plantation drives and environmental education, timed with World Environment Day on June 5.
According to Pradhan, this initiative would act as a catalyst for widespread implementation of the Urban Forest Scheme in Odisha's vulnerable regions. He urged Yadav to prioritise the creation of urban forests in the identified clusters to provide a sustainable and natural solution to combat the intensifying heat waves through large-scale afforestation.

Nagpur: The Union agriculture ministry has included Nagpur in its 'Clean Plant' project, which aims to provide disease-free seedlings to farmers. While announcing the project at an event in Pune on Tuesday, Union agriculture minister said 'Clean Plant' projects will be started in Pune for grapes, in Nagpur for oranges, and in Solapur for pomegranates. The Central government will provide ₹3 crore for large nurseries and ₹1.5 crore for medium-sized nurseries. "Through these nurseries, 8 crore disease-free seedlings will be available to farmers every year. Also, cooperation from countries like Israel and the Netherlands will be taken to implement this program," said Chouhan. He further stated that scientists work in laboratories to produce good seeds, increase production, and diagnose diseases. However, their research does not reach the farmers in a timely manner. To bridge this gap, the government is trying to bring scientists and farmers together through 'Lab to Land'. "The Central government has taken an important decision that 16,000 scientists from across the country will come out of laboratories and work directly with farmers and the agriculture department," Chouhan said. Chouhan also said that there is a misconception that the youth do not want to enter the agricultural sector. "The youth must use their skills and enter the agricultural sector to initiate startups." CM hands over job letters to differently abled candidates

Yadav said on the occasion that 'Divyangjans' have established their place in society based on their own ability, qualification, perseverance, and positivity. This self-confidence gives them a special identity. The Government of Madhya Pradesh is committed to encouraging and supporting them at every level. Social justice minister Narayan Singh Kushwaha said on the occasion that 'Divyangjans' are being given benefits like education-training, skill enhancement, scholarships, etc. While a 4 per cent reservation for 'Divyangjans' is provided throughout the country, chief minister Yadav has provided 6 percent reservation to them in government jobs.
