NIRA Dynamics, a Swedish automotive software company, has announced a strategic partnership with South Korea's BANF Smart Tire System to enhance vehicle safety and predictive maintenance.
This collaboration will integrate BANF's advanced high-frequency tyre sensors into NIRA's software ecosystem, improving real-time monitoring capabilities for commercial vehicles.

BANF's Smart Profiler system offers a hardware advancement by wirelessly powering sensors inside fast-spinning tyres, connected to the vehicle battery.
This innovation addresses a key challenge in tyre digitisation—ensuring continuous power and real-time data transmission from rotating tyres.

The company's collaborations with automotive giants like Volkswagen Group have led to innovations such as Road Surface Alerts, which inform drivers of road hazards based on real-time friction and vehicle data.
NIRA's focus on medium and large commercial vehicles addresses pressing safety challenges, including thousands of annual wheel detachment incidents reported by the Swedish Tire Safety Council.
NIRA's Loose Wheel Indicator (LWI), used in Audi vehicles since 2017, detects lug nut loosening using existing wheel speed sensors. This technology is now being extended to heavy-duty vehicles through the BANF partnership.
For fleet operators, NIRA's integrated system offers operational benefits.
Its Winter Road Insights product helps Scandinavian road authorities optimise salt use and ploughing routes by analysing friction data from connected vehicles.
Combined with BANF's wear prediction algorithms, fleets can expect reduced tyre replacement costs and improved fuel efficiency.

NIRA's technology roadmap extends beyond traditional applications.
Its Road Surface Conditions product creates "grip maps" that enable SAE Level 2-3 autonomous vehicles to adjust driving behaviour based on real-time friction data collected from various sources, including BANF's tyre-level sensors.
Leveraging data from several million vehicles, NIRA is also developing AI models for predictive infrastructure maintenance.

BT announced in 2023 plans to cut up to 55,000 jobs by 2030 as part of a push to reduce its cost base by the end of the decade. But Kirkby told the FT that this plan "did not reflect" AI's "full potential." "Depending on what we learn from AI ... there may be an opportunity for BT to be even smaller by the end of the decade," she said. BT has turned to AI in recent years to reinvent processes in areas like customer service. The company announced in 2024 that it was using generative AI to aid sales and support operations across BT and EE, its mobile network division. In December, the firm said that EE's virtual assistant, dubbed "Aimee," was handling up to 60,000 customer conversations a week. BT is not alone in its attempts to automate such tasks. Swedish payments company Klarna has been open about its efforts to use AI to run its customer service desks. In 2024, Klarna said its OpenAI-powered AI assistant was carrying out the work of 700 full-time customer service agents. The firm's CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, has been a strong advocate of AI but has since softened his position on the tech, saying in May that certain cost-cutting efforts had gone too far and that Klarna was now recruiting for its customer service operation, Bloomberg reported. But Siemiatkowski has remained confident that AI poses a major threat to white-collar jobs going forward. Speaking on The Times Tech podcast earlier this month, Siemiatkowski said that the technology had played a major role in "efficiency gains" at Klarna and that its workforce had reduced from about 5,500 to 3,000 people in the last two years as a result. "My suspicion again is that there will be an implication for white-collar jobs, and when that happens, that usually leads to at least a recession in the short term," he added. "Unfortunately, I don't see how we could avoid that, with what's happening from a technology perspective." AI companies themselves have sounded the alarm that their product could significantly impact the job market. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently warned that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within the next five years. "We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming," Amodei told Axios in May. "I don't think this is on people's radar.

Researchers make game-changing breakthrough that could change how we heat our homes: 'Has great potential'

While photovoltaics convert the sun's rays into electricity, solar thermal collectors absorb its heat energy for home and industrial purposes. A researcher at Umeå University in Sweden recently developed new sustainable coatings for these collectors that can improve their efficiency and durability, according to a report from the school. "Solar thermal has great potential to contribute to the green transition, especially as a source of industrial process heat. But the technology needs to become even more competitive to gain broader traction," said Erik Zäll, a doctoral student in experimental physics at Umeå University. By leveraging more sustainable methods of heat or electricity generation, companies can reduce their carbon footprints, decrease their operating costs, and even pass on those savings to consumers. Zäll explained in his doctoral thesis how optical coatings could be tailored for two key components of solar thermal collectors: the cover glass, where light enters the system, and the receiver that absorbs the light and converts it into heat. An anti-reflective silica coating with small, hexagonally ordered pores helped improve light transmission through the cover glass while boosting the coating's resistance to environmental factors such as scratches, dirt, and moisture. For the receiver, two solutions were presented that helped absorb most of the sunlight while emitting little thermal radiation. Both can be manufactured using low-cost, environmentally friendly methods that can be scaled up for production. One option uses an electroplated cobalt-chromium coating that absorbs light and is more environmentally friendly than other types of chromium previously used. The second is a composite film made up of carbon nanotubes and silica, which the report said can be spray-coated onto annealed stainless steel using ultrasonic technology. The thermal treatment of the steel helps create a thin oxide layer that boosts optical properties and heat resistance. According to the World Economic Forum, heat accounts for half the world's energy consumption, from home space heaters to industrial applications. The processes used in creating this heat contribute more than 40% of global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Solar energy systems can use the sun's rays to heat water or air in buildings, with flat-plate collectors being the most common type for applications where temperatures of 200 degrees Fahrenheit are sufficient. Some industrial-scale solar thermal power plants use vast arrays of concentrating collectors that focus the sun's rays on a smaller absorber for heat generation. Zäll's research was done in collaboration with Absolicon Solar Collector and is specifically adapted to the Swedish solar energy company's designs, which have led to two patent applications for more efficient solar collectors. Absolicon's website details how its sustainable heat collector systems can work alongside solar photovoltaics to lighten the load on the electricity grid and boiler systems that use dirty fuels. Those systems include thermal energy storage in the form of heat batteries, which allow them to operate around the clock, even when the sun isn't shining, increasing the sustainability factor for the technology. "Our work shows that it's possible to combine sustainability, cost-effectiveness and high performance in optical coatings – a key to making solar heat a viable alternative to fossil fuels on a larger scale," Zäll concluded.
