Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's bitter relationship now from ghosting to 'witch' jibes
Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were once showbiz's greatest partnerships - friends on and off screen - but things turned sour a couple of years ago and there's unlikely any turning back
Only a few years ago Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were TV's golden couple, popular with viewers and fronting more than one primetime show together. As well as hosting iconic daytime series This Morning together for over 14 years, the pair dazzled as co-hosts of Saturday evening show Dancing On Ice - back when it commanded millions of viewers.
It was clear to viewers that Phillip and Holly's natural onscreen chemistry, which often left them in fits of giggles, was due to their genuine friendship - no mean feat in the shark-infested waters of the competitive television industry.
At the annual National TV Awards, the pair would often arrive in the ITV studios worse for wear after painting the town red following their frequent wins. But the personal friendship and professional partnership all came crashing down on May 18, 2023. They haven't been seen together publicly since their last show then.
Phil quits and admits 'I've lost my best friend'
It was May last year when the TV world was rocked as 63-year-old Phillip dramatically "quit" This Morning after admitting to lying about an 'unwise but not illegal' affair' with a 20-year-old runner on the programme.
Along with the scandal, rumours began to swirl about an alleged feud between the former best friends. It came after they were hit with criticism in September 2022, following allegations that they'd queue-jumped while seeing the late Queen Elizabeth II lying in state at Westminster Hall.
Matters between the pair appeared to escalate when Holly, 44, released a statement saying she was left feeling "hurt" after Phil's "lies" came to light. In a bombshell interview with the BBC, Phil spoke about his last text to Holly before ties were severed.
"The last time we had a conversation was when I texted Holly and said, 'Don't reply' – this was after the statement last week – 'Don't reply, you're probably not allowed to, but I am deeply deeply sorry that I lied to you. And I am." He also told that the affair "was the one secret in our sanctuary that was never mentioned", adding that he had "lost my best friend".
Addressing rumours that the mum-of-three knew about the affair, Phillip said: "Holly did not know. And she was one of the first texts that I sent, to say, 'I am so, so sorry that I lied to you'. She didn't reply and I understand why she didn't reply, as well. So yeah. If anyone is in any way linking Holly to this; that is absolutely, wholly untrue."
Phil's brother sex abuse scandal
On May 19 2023 Phil's brother Timothy was jailed for 12 years after being convicted of sexually abusing a vulnerable teenage boy over a three-year period. Initially Holly was reportedly furious that Phil kept her in the dark about the trial.
A friend told the Mirror: "There is a narrative - uncorrected by Holly's team - that she was blindsided by news of his brother's court case and was furious with him for keeping her in the dark about it.
'But that narrative couldn't be further from the truth. '
But when it became 'bad for her brand', it is understood Holly quickly turned her back on the former This Morning star when Timothy went on trial in May.
Phil's bitterness
Initially Phil said he understood Holly's distance.
He told The Sun: "Quite rightly, when I am in the middle of a s*** show with bad press over something where I have done nothing wrong – in fact, I did everything right – it's a witch hunt. And that strips that away. Quite rightly, she is going to take a step back and think, 'I have to step back from this', and I understand that completely."
But Holly's apparent disinterest in patching things up appears to have caused an even wider rift, with Phil making some veiled jibes at his former friend and co-host in the 2024 Channel 5 show Cast Away.
Phil said: 'I miss parts of being on TV, certainly. I miss most of it, if I'm honest. But there are bits that I really, really, really don't miss.'
Though Holly is never mentioned by name, Phil continued: 'You learn a lot about people. I don't miss that. When you throw someone under a bus, you've got to have a really bloody good reason to do it.'
In the series Phil spent 10-week stint on an isolated tropical island off the coast of Madagascar.
He also appeared to mock Holly's cringe moment 'are you OK?' intro to viewers on This Morning after he left. Making it clear there is no love lost between the pair these days, Phil was filmed sitting down with his wife Steph and two daughters Molly, 31, and Ruby, 28, for a BBQ in their garden where he jokingly said: "If you're okay, then we're okay and I'm okay. Are you okay?'
Then, Phil made a bombshell remark suggesting he was fired from the This Morning sofa rather than leaving by choice after two decades, Phil said: 'It's inconceivable that I would quit [any show that he is on].' In a blunt comment, he added: 'I don't quit. I'm fired. But I never quit.'
In another scene whilst fishing on the island, he could be referring to Holly again when he says: "People who I thought were my friends, just went. And that's like 'what the hell?'.
Holly's revels in 'witch' status
In October 2-24 it was claimed in The Sun, that Phil refers to his former pal Holly, 43, as ' the witch', within his inner circle. Friends of the disgraced presenter said Phil felt Holly and a This Morning boss had staged a 'very well constructed coup' as the country witnessed his dramatic fall from grace.
According to a source speaking to The Sun, he even uses a hatted hag's emoji when discussing her with pals if she comes up.
A few days after Phil's nickname for his ex bestie was reported, Holly seemingly referenced the jibe as she shared a picture of Kate Moss dressed as a witch on the catwalk in the 1990s.
To add fuel to the fire, the blonde beauty added Donovan's Season Of The Witch single in the background.
Ice queen Holly's new year Phil snub
Holly returned to Dancing On Ice this year with Phil's replacement Stephen Mulhern.
The pair had presented the show since it launched back in 2006. Christine Lampard took over from Holly for three years, before Holly and Phil rejoined in 2018 after a break.
Catchphrase host Stephen permanently joined Holly Willoughby in presenting the sixteenth season of Dancing on Ice in January 2023. However the permanency of his role didn't last long as the series was axed after this year's series ended in March.
Following the blow, Holly issued an emotional statement on Instagram, but failed to mention her former co-host Phillip in the statement or feature him in photos. Following Dancing on Ice' s axe, she shared a behind the scenes photo of the latest series as well as throwback snaps and wrote: "A huge thank you to @ itv, The brilliant team, Crew, Celebrities and Everyone who has been part of our Dancing on Ice family over the last 19 years.
"Every year, just when January felt at its greyest, Dancing on Ice arrived like a burst of glittering, dazzling light, warm, joyful, and full of heart… It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside true national treasures Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, and to have a front-row seat to their breathtaking skating.
"Watching them glide across the ice was nothing less than pure magic… A special thanks must also go to Arnica, Deep Heat, Spanx and fake tan, unsung heroes of the rink!
"… I will miss it hugely, but I count myself so lucky to have had it for as long as we did. Finally and most importantly, thank you to you for watching, you're the BEST! …"
There was no mention of the man that had once championed her as his fellow host for so many years. And it is unlikely given all that has been said that the pair will ever reunite on screen - or be the great friends they once were.

Why Helena and Harry's shotgun trip to The Hideaway means Love Island's rediscovered its sex factor
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CALL me a voyeur, but I'm a 40-year-old, married woman who is hot under the collar at the idea lust is back on Love Island. The Sun told yesterday how two of this year's intake enjoyed a sleepover in the private Hideaway boudoir just 56 hours after meeting. 6 Blonde cabin crew Helena Ford enjoyed a sleepover in the Hideaway Credit: itv 6 Semi-pro footballer Harry Cooksley is now coupled up with another Islander Credit: itv It's even juicier because - officially - both blonde cabin crew Helena Ford and semi-pro footballer Harry Cooksley are coupled up with other Islanders. Of course it helps that both are cut straight from the Barbie and Ken mould, with matching abs, glowing tans and designer locks. So when I heard from my source that the pin-up pairing had snuck away on Monday to spend the night in the private bedroom, I was gleeful. That's not because I get my kicks watching twenty-somethings frolic in a Majorcan villa - honest, Mr Cross. It's because it was the early sign of promise that sex might just be back on Love Island after years of celibacy. Bold choice too far Let me lead you astray, back to 2015 when the ITV dating series first plunged a group of youngsters into a luxury villa and encouraged them to find, ahem, love. The series' main characters were John Lee and Hannah Elizabeth, who weren't afraid to get down to it in the communal bedroom. Despite Michelle and Stuart, then Makosi and Anthony engaging in a public PDA on Big Brother in 2004 and 2005 respectively, such bold antics felt entirely new to TV viewers and split the nation. But nothing prepared the pearl clutchers for what happened a year on. The entire cast let rip, with eight couples going all the way - usually in the shared bedroom - which was all fun and games until ITV bosses took two specific editorial decisions too far. Love Island fans spot clue islander is 'faking' claim he has never shared a bed with a girl Beauty queen Zara Holland was stripped of her Miss GB title after having sex with Alex Bowen in the Hideaway in 2016. The judges were said to have been particularly offended by a scene which saw her visibly enjoying the act. Then, another late night scene showed Emma-Jane Woodham on top of Terry Walsh, above the bed covers. It was a bold choice too far - even after the 9pm watershed - and viewers rushed to Ofcom. That was the end of sex on Love Island as we knew it and from then on, execs took the decision to instead show a shaking bedside lamp or tangled pair of feet. And in recent years the Instagram career-focussed cast and media trained Islanders have abstained entirely. Abi Moores told The Sun that no one hooked up in the 2023 series until the penultimate night, when the cast are allowed to spend a night away from the cameras. 6 Dejon and Meg have also locked lips 6 Helena has a three way kiss with Conor and Harry Only TV personality Joey Essex and his girl Jessy Potts succumbed last summer - and the only clue was a wobbling champagne bucket, as they cemented their union, artfully off shot. But this lot don't seem to be as PR-focussed. Last night's episode, the third of this series, presented a lapdance, finger sucking, a string of snogs and even a three-way smooch. Tommy and Megan, Dejon and Meg, Shakira and Blu and throuple Helena, Harry and Conor have all locked lips. And the ep teased Helena and Harry's saucy sleepover, with them sharing an afternoon kiss on the Hideaway's swing and joking they would 'wait five minutes after everyone's gone to sleep then sneak in overnight.' Frankly, it's the green shoots of recovery the long-running series needs. The launch drew an audience of 1.4 million across all devices, which ITV proudly reported was ITV2's biggest show this year. But it represented a drop on last year's 1.6 million and was a far cry from its heyday when 6 million tuned in. As the series celebrates its tenth anniversary, there's still some love left for the format - all 11 series have been streamed a whopping 2billion times to date on ITVX. This year's up-for-it cast could prove to be the Viagra the series needs. 6 Harry and Helena were in the Hideaway boudoir just 56 hours after meeting 6 Love Island's Shakira and Blu sharing a kiss The dating show genre has upped its game in recent years, with Rylan Clark's Dating Naked asking its cast to find love entirely in the nude. And 12 innocents even explored popping their cherries on Channel 4's Virgin Island. But will Helena and Harry end up regretting their private night? Zara Holland, now 29, crown for being Love Island's most talked-about bonker after her beauty pageant scandal in 2016. After the series, she said: 'I regret massively having sex on the show. 'If I could turn back the clock, I would. 'I know I didn't do anything illegal, I was twenty at the time, there's nothing to be ashamed of but yes, you know, it was the biggest regret.' Montana Brown's relationship with Alex Beattie only lasted a couple of weeks when they left the villa. And Montana, now 29 and a mum of two, came to look back on their hour-long sex sessions during the 2017 series with regret. She said: 'In hindsight, having sex on TV wasn't the best idea. My advice to the new hopefuls is not to do it. 'If I could have done it differently, I wouldn't have had sex. 'It's all everyone wants to speak about now.' While some regret having sex on TV just once, Kem Cetinay's remorse comes from the fact he had so much. The 2017 series winner, now 29, spoke about his amorous stay in the villa with Amber Davies. He said: 'Maybe I shouldn't have had as much sex as I did – maybe once or twice would have been enough. 'Now I've got a business and I've got staff, and if new recruits search for me, some of the first articles that come up will be about me having sex on TV.' There's plenty of Islanders who still love the fact they for lusty on screen. It's as if people wanted me to be ashamed, but I'm not going to be. Megan Barton-Hanson Jess Shears, now 32, romped with Dom Lever on 2017's series and she reckons hooking up in the villa helped cement their relationship. They are now married with two children. She said: 'I don't regret having sex on TV as such, but it's a bit strange that the whole nation knows about it. 'No one normally knows about your sexual relations but then at the end of the day if that worked for Dom and I, I'm glad that we did because I'm still with him now.' Kady McDermott, now 29, also didn't regret her on-screen sex with boyfriend Scott Thomas in the 2016 series. The couple even stayed together for 18 months after leaving the villa. She said: 'I personally don't regret having sex because it was with someone I was actually with and loved.' And Megan Barton-Hanson is another who has vocally supported pursuing a physical connection on the show after hooking up with Wes Nelson in 2018. She said: 'There is still so much stigma around women even saying they enjoy sex, let alone doing it on national TV. 'When Wes and I were interviewed afterwards, I would always be asked if I regretted having sex on TV and if my parents were embarrassed. They didn't ask Wes. 'It's as if people wanted me to be ashamed, but I'm not going to be.' *Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Joining presenter Jordan North on Capital Breakfast this week, the Dance Moms star said: "You know what's interesting? As hectic as life is, and as much as that noise goes on, I feel like Christopher and I discovered this beautiful house together. "And this house is earthquake proof, and it's fireproof, and bulletproof. "And you know, we discovered this house and found the keys, and we took the keys and locked ourselves in, and now it's like... You know what I mean? I feel like that with myself, I feel like that with him." Jordan then quizzed JoJo on whether she had found her 'happy place' with Chris. The US star gushed: "Oh my god, absolutely! We're having the best time. He's just the best! "I was saying this to my parents the other day. Like, I'm decently nice; he makes me look like I'm mean! "And I'm like known for being nice, that's the thing. People say to me, 'Oh, you're so nice'. "He makes me we want to be nicer, because he's such a nice human. He's the best egg in the batch! I could never get tired of speaking highly of him, he's just the best." Chris Hughes breaks silence on JoJo Siwa relationship and he's quizzed by Ben Shepherd on This Morning During their trip to the countryside to meet Chris's parents last week, the couple couldn't keep their hands off each other as the Love Island hunk was pictured kissing JoJo on the neck. Yesterday JoJo said she is "shocked" at how close the pair have them have become in such a short amount of time. Speaking to Billboard, JoJo said: "It blows my mind that 30 days ago I would never have even imagined that I would be friends with Chris Hughes, that's the weirdest thing, much less be one of the closest people too me now in my life who I would die for. "I think its a combination of the shared experience but also in Big Brother, you have no phone, no outside communication, no distraction, nothing. "You only have each other. I love connecting and I love people and when someone comes into your life and you enjoy it, you can tell." LOVED-UP TRIP JoJo's interview comes fresh from a cosy weekend she spent with Chris and his family in the Cotswolds. The YouTuber shared their time together on social media, which included a series of loved-up snaps with the Love Island hunk. In one of the snaps, Chris could be seen picking his girlfriend up and carrying her, whilst in another they held hands. JoJo described holding her boyfriend's hand as "the one thing that can make everything better". She also shared pictures of the pair enjoying breakfast and cups of tea as she relaxed at Chris' family home. MISSING HER MAN JoJo, who fell for Chris in the Celebrity Big Brother house, said she struggled to go back to normal life without Chris when she returned to the US for a month. But now the American star, who hails from Nebraska, plans to spend more time in the UK. The couple also spent time together when JoJo was in England for her tour. The happy couple drove fans wild with an intimate backstage moment in a post to TikTok when the pair were seen hugging each other, holding hands and putting bracelets on each other. 4 JoJo spent a cosy weekend with Chris and his family in the Cotswold's at the weekend Credit: Instagram/Chris Hughes
