Jordan Rally attracts 21 starters this weekend
AMMAN, Jordan: Twenty-one crews will tackle the opening two rounds of this year's Jordan National Championship that are being held In conjunction with days one and two of this weekend's Jordan Rally, round four of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC). Nine crews are eligible to score points in both the FIA event and the two national rallies with an additional 12 teams running at the rear of the field and solely targeting local championship points. Each of the two national events on Friday and Saturday will run over six gravel special stages in the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley areas. Oman's Abdullah al Rawahi is a former winner of the FIA event and is the top seed for national success, where he faces Rally2 opposition from Shaikh Bader al Fayez and Ihab al Shorafa, all three of whom drive Škoda Fabias this weekend. Defending MERC champion Abdulaziz al Kuwari and his co-driver Marshall Clarke won the Jordan National Championship last season, but the Qatari is not scoring points this year. He is solely targeting the FIA event in a Citroën C3. Al Fayez was the runner-up in the national series in 2024 with Shadi Shaban finishing third. Shaban also topped the standings in the NR4 group with Group MT success falling to Salama al Ghammaz and Hashim al Kalbouneh winning Group T in his Black Iris. Hashim al Kalbouneh Shaker Jweihan is the defending regional MERC2 champion and he will be aiming for national podium success in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. Palestine's Hamada Uda also drives the latest version of the Mitsubishi and there are a fleet of Evo IXs for Shaban, Mohammed al Shorafa, Lebanon's Joanna Hassoun, Issa Abu Jamous and Fadi Dhashan. Fayez al Ghammaz and Faisal al Ghammaz wheel out older versions of the all-conquering Mitsubishi. Oman's Zakariya al Aamri is the current leader of the FIA MERC2 category and is also chasing Jordan National Championship points in his Subaru. Bader al Helalat, Amjad al Sheikh and Asem Aref drive older versions of the renowned Impreza rally car. Al Kalbouneh returns to action with his Black Iris and last year's FIA Middle East Baja Cup's Stock champion Majed al Thunayyan is making the trip from Saudi Arabia to tackle the event in a Nissan Patrol. The Jordanian trio of Yahia Sobar (Toyota FJ), Karim Badawi (Suzuki) and Farah Zakaria (Can-Am) round off the impressive national field. Pact signed to establish advanced testing facility at Sohar Port and Freezone
Sohar Port and Freezone will soon have an advanced and comprehensive testing Centre for all imports and exports to ensure compliance with international quality and safety standards. An agreement to this effect was signed between Global Laboratories and Testing LLC and Al Madina Logistics to establish an advanced testing facility at the Port at the Oman Logistics Day 2025, where 18 investment agreements totalling over RO 100 million were signed to advance the nation's logistics sector. The agreement was entered into by Mahmood bin Sakhi al Balushi, CEO of Al Madina Logistics, and TK Vijayan, Chairman of Global Laboratories and Testing LLC. 'This initiative is part of a broader strategy unveiled during the Oman Logistics Day 2025, and the collaboration between Global Laboratories and Al Madina Logistics underscores a shared commitment to elevating Oman's trade capabilities and ensuring the highest standards of product safety and quality in the global marketplace. The new facility aims to provide comprehensive testing services for all imports and exports processed through Al Madina Logistics, to ensure international standards,' said Mahmood bin Sakhi al Balushi, CEO of Al Madina Logistics. Al Madina Logistics, a leading logistics provider in Oman, operates the Sohar Logistics Hub, strategically located near Sohar Port. The collaboration with GLT is expected to streamline the testing and certification processes for goods, thereby facilitating smoother trade operations and bolstering Oman's position as a logistics hub in the region. 'We believe it is a significant development for Oman's logistics and trade sectors by Global Laboratories and Testing LLC (GLT) partnering with Al Madina Logistics to enter into a strategic agreement to establish a state-of-the-art testing laboratory at the Sohar Logistics Hub. We hope to meet the global standards in serving clients from Oman and beyond and support the nation in meeting the Vision 2040 goals,' said TK Vijayan, Chairman of Global Laboratories and Testing LLC. Established in 2011, Global Laboratories and Testing LLC is a GAC-accredited laboratory renowned for its advanced technical capabilities and cutting-edge instrumentation. The laboratory offers a wide range of testing services, including analyses of food substances, water, cosmetics, petroleum products, and more, catering to the diverse needs of Oman's industries. Key projects signed at the OLD 2025 include the development of LNG infrastructure at Sohar Port and the establishment of a drone research academy at Muscat International Airport.

Gulf Accreditation Centre expands presence with Muscat branch
Muscat – The Gulf Accreditation Centre (GAC) officially opened a branch in Muscat on Sunday, in a move aimed at strengthening quality infrastructure across GCC and supporting international recognition of Gulf competencies. The inauguration was attended by Jasem Mohamed al Budaiwi, Secretary General of the GCC, and H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, along with senior officials from Oman. Speaking at the event, Budaiwi said the opening of the GAC branch in Oman reflects the sultanate's commitment to joint Gulf cooperation and its efforts to advance initiatives in various fields. 'This stems from the wise leadership's noble directives in the sultanate, especially as it responds to an ambitious Gulf vision aimed at unifying efforts and developing the accreditation system, which leads to raising the level of quality and reliability in economic, industrial, health, and educational sectors.' Budaiwi added, 'This aims to achieve Gulf integration and enhance its regional and global standing. The GAC in Oman seeks to outline avenues for cooperation and coordination among the GCC's member states, develop the system for applying standards, evaluation, and product control, as well as support and develop the Gulf industry and economy.' The opening took place on the sidelines of the Advantage Oman Forum, which Budaiwi described as a valuable platform for discussing investment opportunities, and other initiatives.
