Cowboys Can't Waste 'Blow It Up' Plan Under New Coach

The Dallas Cowboys know that what transpired last year can't happen again, and certainly not after the positive offseason we've seen from the franchise.

With Brian Schottenheimer now in the big chair, he has overseen significant changes both on and off the field, thanks to a solid free agency and draft haul, coupled with several coaching changes.
All of that was part of what CowboysCountry.com dissected last offseason as a "Blow It Up'' plan. That was about a combination of inactivity and savings when it came to roster-building going into 2024 ... and major changes - including the dismissal of coach Mike McCarthy - at the end of the 7-10 campaign.
But "Blow It Up'' is over.
Now it is time to recover from the pain and to capitalize.
And the post-McCarthy vibes are good at The Star.

Training camp is under a month away, and we'll get to see how long those good vibes last with the staff able to get a proper evaluation of every player on the roster.
Such has been the level of positivity this offseason that some are hopeful Schotty can lead this franchise back to the playoffs —and possibly beyond. Will it happen? Who knows, but when you have true belief, anything is possible.
However, for that to happen, the Cowboys have to show they are better than they were a year ago, and for Fox Sports' Ben Arthur, when naming one word to describe the offseason, "rebound."
"With quarterback Dak Prescott back healthy, the Cowboys will look to return to the playoffs in 2025," Arthur writes. "They traded for receiver George Pickens and a pair of former first-round defenders (linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr., cornerback Kaiir Elam) to give their team a boost under new coach Brian Schottenheimer."

There are many unknowns about the Cowboys under Schottenheimer, with numerous new faces, a different coaching approach, and adjustments to the system.

However, there is also a benefit to change. With a revamped run game and offensive line, and with Dak Prescott now having two genuine receiving weapons, fans are no longer looking at Dallas as dead in the water.
Granted, we are in June, so we can't be steadfast in our convictions just yet.
But things are nicely poised for the Cowboys to "rebound" under Schottenheimer.

NHL Draft: Boston Bruins Steal James Hagens In 'A Dream Come True'

LOS ANGELES – The Boston Bruins pulled off a great feat at the 2025 NHL draft: they got a super-talented player lower than expected, while adding another chapter to the rivalry between Boston sports fans and New York sports fans by snapping up center James Hagens. While New York Islanders supporters hoped their franchise would use two first-rounders it got for moving Noah Dobson to trade up and select the Long Island native, Hagens ended up going seventh overall to the Bruins, who got a little help from Happy Gilmore himself in making the pick. Advertisement "You're just sitting, waiting to hear your name called and when you hear Adam Sandler call it, it's pretty cool," Hagens said. "This is a really cool moment." Hagens, of course, knows Boston well. He just finished his freshman season at NCAA Boston College, where he helped the Eagles rank at or near the top of the national polls pretty much all season. "It's the coolest thing in the world," Hagens said. "It's close to home, so it's nice for my parents. I wanted to go to school in Boston, and turns out I'm a Boston Bruin now, so it all worked out. It really is a dream come true." 2025 NHL Draft Tracker: Round 1 Picks, Reports, Rankings And More 2025 NHL Draft Tracker: Round 1 Picks, Reports, Rankings And More The 2025 NHL draft day is here. Check out the picks and scouting reports of the first round as they come in, as well as draft rankings and much more prospect coverage. Advertisement No doubt the Bruins were pinching themselves when their turn came, and Hagens was still on the board. The gifted pivot was a pre-season front-runner to go first overall, but as time went on, other players caught up and passed him. It's truly not an indictment of Hagens, who won world junior gold with Team USA and had a very impressive college season, given his age. But his frame is smaller than some of the other centers that went in front of him, and as history indicates, smaller players tend to get dinged on draft day, particularly in the first 10 selections. From the sounds of it, the Bruins kept pretty good tabs on Hagens this season. "I talked to them a lot," Hagens said. "My sister had a tournament in Boston so I drove her up, and I was able to meet with one of their scouts there. I was in contact with them a lot, obviously being close to them at Boston College." James Hagens walks up to the stage after Adam Sandler announced him as the Boston Bruins' pick. (Kirby Lee-Imagn Images) If Hagens needs any more inside info, he can just call up some of his Boston College teammates: Andre Gasseau, Dean Letourneau and Oskar Jellvik had already been drafted by the Bruins in previous classes. Advertisement As for all the hype about him potentially going to his hometown Islanders, Hagens wasn't going to bog himself down in what-ifs before the picks were actually made. "I blocked it all out," he said. "I didn't know what was going to happen. You're not sitting in those rooms, and I'm really happy to be a Boston Bruin." For a franchise in desperate need of centers now and in the future, the Bruins now have a very good option once Hagens is ready to turn pro – and it won't take long. Pirates' Mitch Keller ends 15-start winless streak

PITTSBUURGH (AP) — Mitch Keller hadn't won a game since the early days of the season. 'It was just a great team win. That's what matters to me, team wins, and I was just glad to do my part," the 29-year-old right-hander said after leading the Pittsburgh Pirates over the New York Mets 9-1 on Friday night. "You only have so much control over individual wins, which is why I don't worry about them.' Advertisement Keller (2-10) allowed one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. He had been 0-10 with a 4.10 ERA in 15 starts since winning at Miami on March 28, the longest winless streak within a season in Pirates history. Pittsburgh hadn't scored more than four runs in any of Keller's previous starts. 'They were swinging early in the game but then I was able to start getting some quick outs,' Keller said. 'I started throwing more strikes and I think that was the difference.' Juan Soto homered in the fourth, his 20th this season. Keller was pulled at 91 pitches in the sixth inning with a 5-1 lead after walking Soto and allowing a single to Pete Alonso. Advertisement 'For Mitch, that was awesome,' Pirates manager Don Kelly said. 'He did what he's done consistently throughout this year. Pitched really, really well against a really good team. To score some runs for him felt really good, and to get him the win was great.' ___ AP MLB: John Perrotto, The Associated Press
