Midlothian primary children 'told to send explicit photos' in WhatsApp group
Midlothian children were added to a WhatsApp group and 'told to send explicit photographs'.
Police are investigating after six children at Paradykes Primary in Loanhead were urged 'not to let parents know' when they were added into a group chat. The pupils targeted were aged between nine and 10-years-old.
Midlothian Council said the children were being offered support, with parents alerted of the incident in an email. They confirmed the group had not been accessed using council-issued devices, reports the Daily Record.
Parents were sent a warning to check their children's phones and remove them from the group after some children were understood to have been added on their personal devices.
An email from the school's head teacher said some of the messages were "highly inappropriate, referring explicitly to body parts" and "requesting nude photos", according to BBC News.

It said that 84 people were members of the group, warning it "went beyond" children solely from Paradykes. A Midlothian Council spokesperson said: "The head teacher at Paradykes Primary emailed P6 parents today after a parent reported concerns about the online safety of children on a WhatsApp group.
"A council investigation confirmed the group was not on council devices. The head teacher has passed the matter to the police, and the council will issue guidance to all parents in Midlothian on how to keep their child safe online.

Police find nine severed heads in boxes after bursting into man's home
WARNING, DISTRESSING CONTENT: The remains had been kept in cool boxes by the serial killer. Nine severed heads were found in boxes by police - after officers raided a serial killer's home following a tip from the brother of one of his victims. The raid on the property unearthed body parts belonging to nine different people - eight women and one man. It came after a discovery by the brother of one of the women. He found messages between his sister and the serial killer on social media and alerted the authorities, allowing them to descend on the property in question. After raiding the man's apartment they found the remains, which had been stored in cool boxes. The Mirror reports authorities said cat litter had been used to mask the smell. The human remains had been stashed around Takahiro Shiraishi's home in Japan. The twisted murderer was arrested in 2017 at the apartment in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Justice Minister Keisuke Suzuki said he had targeted "mentally fragile" women on Twitter, now known as X, who had expressed suicidal thoughts on the platform. This led to him being dubbed the Twitter Killer. He sickeningly offered to assist them with their wish to die and lured them to his apartment which was around 20 miles outside Tokyo. He then beat, strangled, killed, robbed, and mutilated them. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Shiraishi also sexually abused his victims, three of whom were teenagers, aged between 15 and 26. One was the boyfriend of one of the slain girls, who he killed to silence and prevent authorities discovering his sick plot. He admitted murdering all nine victims and was sentenced to death in 2020. Jusice Minister Suzuki said he agreed to the execution 'after careful consideration' because the heinous crimes were committed to satisfy Shiraishi's "sexual and financial desires". In March 2025 Shiraishi, 34, was hanged at the Tokyo Detention House in what was Japan's first execution since 2022. News of the event wasn't released until afterwards. Prisoners are given just a few hours to no warning beforehand, while their families have none. Japan and the US are the only countries in the G7 that still use the death penalty and the decision to execute Shiraishi was condemned by the European Union.

Man caught on CCTV 'starting fire which gutted Scots businesses and killed cat'
The blaze took place in Glasgow last month and a £10,000 reward has been offered for information. CCTV footage has emerged of a man allegedly starting a massive fire at a Glasgow business which lead to the death of a cat. The clip shows the man pouring a liquid onto the floor from a green canister. He then disappears out of sight, and moments later flames burst from the floor where the liquid had been poured at the business in question, in Glasgow's Kinning Park area. The fire took place at a building in Stanley Street on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Glasgow Live reports smoke could be seen from Anderston, on the other side of the Clyde. It rose from the scene as firefighters were pictured battling the flames from aerial platforms, after being scrambled to attend the blaze at 6.46am. A cat died in the fire. Nine fire engines attended after a 999 call. Police are probing the wilful fire-raising, with officers asking anyone with information to come forward. Now CCTV footage of the incident has emerged of the moment a man, riding a bike, enters the premises and sprays a substance before allegedly setting it alight. John McBride, who faces losing his house after his business The Grow Shop was destroyed in the blaze, said: "I got an alert from my alarm system that someone was in the business and I was half way there when I saw the flames. "I phoned 999 but by then the fire brigade was already there. It's completely gutted my business, my brothers, my mum's and the tattoo shop. There are about 15 people who have lost their jobs because of this." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Unfortunately, none of the businesses were insured after a claim for a fire at a nearby car garage five years ago raised the cost from £400 a year to almost £15,000, making it unaffordable. John continued: "I might lose my house, my brother might lose his, everyone is very stressed, and it's having a major impact on our health. My girlfriend has been in the hospital for two weeks now after having a stroke. "We keep three cats in the shop to keep down the rats, they come and go as they want. Zena died in the shop. It's only fortunate that the others were out at the time. "We don't know why anyone would do this. It's ruined so many lives. I estimate that it cost us all around £500,000 in lost stock and damage. "We're trying to get the word out to find who did this. The community has come together and raised £10,000 as a reward to anyone who can identify the guy in the CCTV." John – who had only just opened a second shop, on Spiersbridge Terrace in Thornliebank Industrial Estate – has been left without any income while bills continue to stack. He added: "We don't have any customers at the new shop yet. We're hoping it will pick up because I have no income and it's just bills after bills we are getting." A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: 'Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0563 of 31 July, 2025. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.'
