Gunman in 2022 mass shooting at suburban Chicago July Fourth parade to be sentenced in court

Time of India24-04-2025

Judge Victoria Rossetti (AP)
WAUKEGAN: The man who admitted to a
2022 mass shooting
at a suburban Chicago Independence Day parade was set to be sentenced Thursday, a day after survivors and witnesses gave emotional testimony about how their lives have changed since he killed seven people and hurt dozens more.
Robert E. Crimo III
, 24, changed his plea to guilty last month, mere moments before the start of his trial. His case has progressed slowly, in part because of his erratic behavior. That history continued Wednesday when he refused to attend court despite a judge's previous warnings that the case would proceed without him.
Keely Roberts, whose 8-year-old son Cooper Roberts was the youngest person wounded and is paralyzed from the waist down, called Crimo "cowardly" for not attending.
"You will not hear my grief," she said. "You are now irrelevant."

Some survivors called Crimo a "monster" while another cited their faith in forgiving him. Many described feeling empty or facing deep sadness since the shooting. Some no longer attend public gatherings.
Crimo is certain to spend the rest of his life behind bars. He pleaded guilty to 21 counts of first-degree murder - three counts for each person killed - and 48 counts of attempted murder. Each first-degree murder count carries a maximum life sentence in Illinois.
But even in his absence, prosecutors made sure Crimo's own words about the attack took center stage ahead of Judge Victoria Rossetti's sentencing decision.
They used the first day of the hearing to reveal parts of the trove of evidence prepared for trial, including key parts of Crimo's videotaped confession.
In a recording of the police interview, which defense attorneys tried to have thrown out, a blank-faced Crimo slumped in a chair with arms crossed. He told officers that he briefly reconsidered the attack because of a problem with the gun. He later fixed the weapon.
"I walked up the stairs, jumped on the roof and opened fire," he said.
Crimo was calm and cavalier, even laughing and joking, said Brian Bodden, a Highland Park police officer.
Prosecutors recreated the horror of the day in the upscale community of about 30,000 people north of Chicago, showing video taken along the parade route and asking witnesses to recount the terrifying aftermath of the attack.
In one video, a marching band played "You're a Grand Old Flag" before shots were fired. Musicians carrying instruments ran as emergency sirens blared, fleeing along with other attendees.
Many cried during the testimony, while others put their arms around each other inside the
Lake County courtroom
.
The seven people killed were Katherine Goldstein, 64; Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63; Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; Eduardo Uvaldo, 69; and married couple Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35.
Crimo's father, Robert Crimo Jr., a former mayoral candidate, was charged in connection with how his son obtained a gun license. He pleaded guilty in 2023 to seven misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct. He served less than two months in jail.

From dacoits to organised crime: Chambal haunted ravines now hub for AK-47 training and gang operations; linked to Lawrence Bishnoi and Anandpal Singh

From dacoits to organised crime: Chambal haunted ravines now hub for AK-47 training and gang operations; linked to Lawrence Bishnoi and Anandpal Singh JAIPUR: Once known for being haunted hideouts of moustached bandits on horseback, the infamous Chambal ravines are now witnessing a new era of organised crime. Until a few decades ago, the rugged terrain of Dholpur and Karauli was used as a fortress for keeping hostages in captivity with escape routes unknown to the outside world. But now the rivines echo with the gunfire of automatic weapons as they have transformed into training grounds for a new breed of criminals. The dacoits haven't disappeared, they've simply changed alliances. The recent arrest of gangster Jeetu Chambal has revealed a deepening nexus between traditional outlaws and interstate crime syndicates. Jeetu, a known criminal from Dholpur, was caught with an AK-47, allegedly procured from Jaipur. However, what stunned investigators even more was the discovery of a makeshift shooting range hidden in the ravines, used to train sharpshooters and hitmen for organised criminal networks, including those linked to Lawrence Bishnoi and Anandpal Singh. According to anti-gangster task force (AGTF), the hidden range was developed by Jeetu and his brother Ramdutt alias Sonu, a history-sheeter with links to the Anandpal gang. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo These men have become trainers and facilitators for a wider crime syndicate that stretches beyond Rajasthan's borders. Gangsters from Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh reportedly used the facility to train with sophisticated weapons before executing high-profile killings, including those of gangster Raju Thehat and Rajput leader Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. The network came to light while AGTF was tracing the origin of an AK-47, the existence of which surfaced during the investigation into the murder of Gogamedi, who was shot dead at his house in Jaipur's Shyam Nagar area in Dec 2023. Among those arrested was shooter Nitin Fauji. During the investigation, it emerged that a man named Mahendra had given shelter to Fauji at his flat in the city. When police searched the flat, they recovered a photo of an AK-47. Now, more than 18 months later, AGTF recovered an AK-47 from Jeetu Chambal. While AGTF has not officially confirmed whether it is the same AK-47 seen in the photo found at Mahendra's flat, it is suspected that the weapon was being used to train interstate criminal gangs in handling sophisticated weapons. During interrogation, Jeetu told police that the AK-47 was handed over to him on Kalwar Road in Jaipur by a man who hid it in a cricket kit nearly four months ago. He travelled from Chambal with help from Shivraj Singh, a key associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Jeetu didn't even know his way around Jaipur, requiring Shivraj to guided him to the pickup spot. The weapon came with 34 live cartridges and was allegedly ordered by his brother Ramdutt, who was running the Chambal camp with military-style discipline. "The traditional dacoits have vanished from the Chambal, but the nexus of the new breed of criminals from the area with organised gangs is a matter of concern," said an AGTF official. The firing range was being operated professionally, evident from the arrest of one Shyampal Thakur, a wanted criminal with a Rs 15,000 reward on his head, from the ravines of Dholpur on Friday. Thakur, linked to the Sonu Chambal gang, is accused of overseeing arrangements for gang members who used illegal firing ranges in the Chambal ravines to train with weapons. He is also suspected of being involved in arms trafficking, sheltering fugitives, and relaying police activity updates to the gang. Officials said he played a key role in managing food, shelter, and transport for visiting criminals from Rajasthan and neighbouring states.

Gaza mission curbed: IDF intercepts, boards Greta Thunberg's yacht; group calls detention 'arbitrary' and 'unlawful'

(Source: freedomflotilla) A civilian vessel carrying Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and other volunteers was intercepted by Israeli forces on Monday in international waters. According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organised the mission, the ship Madleen was attacked at 3:02 am CET. The vessel was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza in defiance of the Israeli naval blockade. The group claims the ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed crew abducted, and its cargo of food, baby formula and medical supplies confiscated. 'Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen,' said Huwaida Arraf, a human rights attorney and Freedom Flotilla organiser. 'This seizure blatantly violates international law and defies the ICJ's binding orders requiring unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. These volunteers are not subject to Israeli jurisdiction and cannot be criminalised for delivering aid or challenging an illegal blockade—their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end immediately. ' Footage posted on the Madleen's Telegram channel shows activists putting on life jackets in anticipation of the interception. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Home Efficient with This Plug-In elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo Israel's military reportedly boarded the vessel after warning it to change course. Israeli defence minister Israel Katz confirmed the order to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza. 'I have instructed the IDF to act so that the hate flotilla does not reach the shores of Gaza and to take all necessary measures to that end,' he said. 'To the antisemitic Greta and her friends who echo Hamas propaganda, I say clearly: You'd better turn back – because you will not reach Gaza.' The Israeli foreign ministry had earlier called the flotilla a 'media gimmick' disguised as a humanitarian mission. 'The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to unauthorised vessels under a legal naval blockade, consistent with international law,' the ministry posted on X. 'The yacht is claiming that it is delivering humanitarian aid. In fact, it is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) – a 'selfie yacht'. ' This is not the first time the FFC has faced military action. The group says a previous vessel, Conscience, was bombed by an Israeli drone in European waters, injuring four civilians and leaving the ship disabled and on fire. In response, the coalition has called for the immediate release of all detained volunteers, the delivery of the confiscated aid directly to Palestinians, and accountability for what they call a pattern of unprovoked military aggression.

Protests intensify in Los Angeles after Trump deploys hundreds of National Guard troops

Los Angeles: Law enforcement officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Los Angeles on Sunday as they gathered downtown in response to President Donald Trump 's extraordinary deployment of the National Guard over the objections of the governor and mayor. The clashes came on the third day of demonstrations against Trump's immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 federal troops spurred anger and fear among some residents. By midday, hundreds had gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Centre in downtown Los Angeles, where people were detained after earlier immigration raids. Protesters directed chants of "shame" and "go home" at members of the National Guard, who stood shoulder to shoulder, carrying long guns and riot shields. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canada is looking for skilled immigrants - New job opportunities are waiting for you! Canada Immigration Express Apply Now Undo After some protesters closely approached the guard members, another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting smoke-filled canisters into the street. Minutes later, the Los Angeles Police Department fired rounds of crowd-control munitions to disperse the protesters, who they said were assembled unlawfully. Much of the group then moved to block traffic on the 101 freeway. Live Events The presence of the Guard was "inflaming tensions" in the city, according to a letter sent to Trump by Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday afternoon. He formerly requested Trump remove the guard members, which he called a "serious breach of state sovereignty." Trump has said the National Guard was necessary because Newsom and other Democrats have failed to stanch recent protests targeting immigration agents. Their deployment appeared to be the first time in decades that a state's national guard was activated without a request from its governor, a significant escalation against those who have sought to hinder the administration's mass deportation efforts. Deployment follows days of protest The arrival of the National Guard followed two days of protests that began Friday in downtown Los Angeles before spreading on Saturday to Paramount, a heavily Latino city south of the city, and neighbouring Compton. As federal agents set up a staging area on Saturday near a Home Depot in Paramount, demonstrators attempted to block Border Patrol vehicles, with some hurling rocks and chunks of cement. In response, agents in riot gear unleashed tear gas, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls. Tensions were high after a series of sweeps by immigration authorities the previous day, as the weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the city climbed above 100. A prominent union leader was arrested while protesting and accused of impeding law enforcement. The recent protests remain far smaller than past events that have brought the National Guard to Los Angeles, including the Watts and Rodney King riots, and the 2020 protests against police violence, in which Newsom requested the assistance of federal troops. The last time the National Guard was activated without a governor's permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. Trump says there will be very strong law and order In a directive on Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is "a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States." He said he had authorised the deployment of 2,000 members of the National Guard. Trump told reporters as he prepared to board Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, Sunday that there were "violent people" in Los Angeles "and they're not gonna get away with it." Asked if he planned to send US troops to Los Angeles, Trump replied, "We're gonna have troops everywhere. We're not going to let this happen to our country. We're not going to let our country be torn apart like it was under Biden." He did not elaborate. Trump also said that California officials who stand in the way of the deportations could face charges. A Wisconsin judge was arrested last month on accusation that she helped a man evade immigration authorities. "If officials stay in the way of law and order, yeah, they will face charges," Trump said. Newsom called Trump on Friday night and they spoke for about 40 minutes, according to the governor's office. It was not clear if they spoke Saturday or Sunday. There was some confusion surrounding the exact timing of the guard's arrival. Shortly before midnight local time, Trump congratulated the National Guard on a "job well done." But less than an hour later, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said troops had yet to arrive in the city. Defence secretary threatens to deploy active-duty Marines if violence continues In a statement Sunday, Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin accused California's politicians and protesters of "defending heinous illegal alien criminals at the expense of Americans' safety." "Instead of rioting, they should be thanking ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officers every single day who wake up and make our communities safer," McLaughlin added. The troops included members of the California Army National Guard's 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, according to a social media post from the Department of Defense. In a signal of the administration's aggressive approach, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also threatened to deploy active-duty Marines "if violence continues" in the region. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said the order by Trump reflected "a president moving this country rapidly into authoritarianism" and "usurping the powers of the United States Congress." Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lives in Los Angeles, said the immigration arrests and Guard deployment were designed as part of a "cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division." She said she supports those "standing up to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms." House Speaker Mike Johnson, a staunch Trump ally, endorsed the president's move, doubling down on Republicans' criticisms of California Democrats. "Gavin Newsom has shown an inability or an unwillingness to do what is necessary, so the president stepped in," Johnson said.
