at a suburban Chicago Independence Day parade was set to be sentenced Thursday, a day after survivors and witnesses gave emotional testimony about how their lives have changed since he killed seven people and hurt dozens more.

, 24, changed his plea to guilty last month, mere moments before the start of his trial. His case has progressed slowly, in part because of his erratic behavior. That history continued Wednesday when he refused to attend court despite a judge's previous warnings that the case would proceed without him.
Keely Roberts, whose 8-year-old son Cooper Roberts was the youngest person wounded and is paralyzed from the waist down, called Crimo "cowardly" for not attending.
"You will not hear my grief," she said. "You are now irrelevant."

Some survivors called Crimo a "monster" while another cited their faith in forgiving him. Many described feeling empty or facing deep sadness since the shooting. Some no longer attend public gatherings.
Crimo is certain to spend the rest of his life behind bars. He pleaded guilty to 21 counts of first-degree murder - three counts for each person killed - and 48 counts of attempted murder. Each first-degree murder count carries a maximum life sentence in Illinois.
But even in his absence, prosecutors made sure Crimo's own words about the attack took center stage ahead of Judge Victoria Rossetti's sentencing decision.
They used the first day of the hearing to reveal parts of the trove of evidence prepared for trial, including key parts of Crimo's videotaped confession.
In a recording of the police interview, which defense attorneys tried to have thrown out, a blank-faced Crimo slumped in a chair with arms crossed. He told officers that he briefly reconsidered the attack because of a problem with the gun. He later fixed the weapon.
"I walked up the stairs, jumped on the roof and opened fire," he said.
Crimo was calm and cavalier, even laughing and joking, said Brian Bodden, a Highland Park police officer.
Prosecutors recreated the horror of the day in the upscale community of about 30,000 people north of Chicago, showing video taken along the parade route and asking witnesses to recount the terrifying aftermath of the attack.
In one video, a marching band played "You're a Grand Old Flag" before shots were fired. Musicians carrying instruments ran as emergency sirens blared, fleeing along with other attendees.

The seven people killed were Katherine Goldstein, 64; Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63; Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; Eduardo Uvaldo, 69; and married couple Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35.
Crimo's father, Robert Crimo Jr., a former mayoral candidate, was charged in connection with how his son obtained a gun license. He pleaded guilty in 2023 to seven misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct. He served less than two months in jail.

Crime branch arrests 2 drug traffickers, seizes heroin worth Rs 80 lakh
New Delhi: Two drug traffickers, including a woman, have been arrested by Delhi Police 's crime branch with high-grade heroin worth Rs 80 lakh recovered from their possession. Police received a tip off regarding movement of drugs on July 19. "A police team intercepted 36-year-old Kashim, resident of New Seemapuri, and recovered 789 grams of heroin from him. A case under sections of the NDPS Act was registered at the Crime Branch police station," DCP (crime) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said. Kashim said he was working for 48-year-old Bindu Devi, a known trafficker from New Seemapuri Jhuggi, who allegedly ran the supply chain through her absconding son-in-law, Arif alias Samir. RPF steps up security measures at major railway stations ahead of Independence Day
Security has been stepped up at major railway stations falling under the limits of Tiruchi Division ahead of Independence Day as a precautionary measure to avert any untoward incidents. Personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Tiruchi Division, have stepped up surveillance round the clock and vigil in coordination with Government Railway Police and local police at the stations. The Bomb Detection Squad of the RPF has been roped in as part of the security measures. Personnel forming part of the squad are engaged in carrying out anti-sabotage checks at the railway stations. Detective dogs are being used to detect the presence of any suspicious objects on the railway premises. The jurisdiction of the RPF Tiruchi Division extends to over 10 revenue districts including Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, Cuddalore and Villupuram. A senior RPF official in Tiruchi said vigil had been stepped at major stations from August 11, with field-level officers instructed to enhance security measures. Random checking of passengers and their belongings was being done by the RPF personnel. The major stations where security had intensified included Tiruchi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur. Crowded areas such as cloak rooms, waiting halls, concourse areas and lobbies on the premises of the stations were under constant vigil. Besides platforms and other areas within stations, anti-sabotage checks were also being done by the RPF and Bomb Detection Squad personnel armed with necessary paraphernalia on railway parcels prior to being dispatched by trains. Random checks were also being conducted in some express trains upon arrival at Tiruchi railway junction. Patrolling was being done on railway premises and in its vicinity as part of the security measure. The assistance of local police had been sought in other stations in the division. The enhanced security measures would be in place till August 15, the officer added.
