Manchester United can win 2028 Premier League: CEO Omar Barreda sets bold target

India Today7 hours ago

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has stood firm on his ambitious goal for the club—winning both the men's and women's Premier League titles by 2028, coinciding with the club's 150th anniversary. Following what was arguably their worst season in decades, Berrada remains optimistic. United finished 16th in the 2024–25 Premier League, narrowly avoiding relegation—a low not seen since the 1973–74 season, when they were demoted to the second tier.advertisementDespite the dramatic slump, Berrada is sticking to his 'Project 150' plan, which he first unveiled in September 2024."It's establishing a series of targets within a timeframe so we can focus our efforts and energy on that goal. Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course. We've just finished 15th and it seems an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?" the 47-year-old said.
"We have two or three summer windows to build a team to start competing to win the Premier League...Nobody is saying we don't want to win it until then. We're setting ourselves a target with a specific time-frame to go and aim for," Berrada added. While the men's team has been clouded by internal tensions—most notably Alejandro Garnacho's reported fallout with manager Ruben Amorim, and the exits of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho on loan—Berrada acknowledged the unrest but promised that rebuilding efforts are in motion.advertisement"We have been a bit distracted with all the issues around the men's first team, but we are committed to making the women's team very successful," said Berrada. While United have started with their business in this summer window, Berrada believes that the club will find its way to recovery.

Soccer-FA charges referee Coote in relation to comments on Klopp

June 17 - Premier League referee David Coote was charged by the Football Association on Tuesday in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. "It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1," the FA said in a statement. "It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality." Rule E3 deals with improper conduct that brings the game into disrepute, including insulting words or behaviour, while it also covers actions that question the integrity of match officials. In November, the FA said they were also investigating allegations that Coote had discussed booking a player the day before a game with a friend, which the referee denied. "No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated," the FA added. Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. The 42-year-old had apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024.
