Andhra Government accelerates preparations for Amaravati works
Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana, accompanied by Guntur Range IG Sarvashreshtha Tripathi and District SP Satish Kumar, conducted a two-hour inspection of major routes leading to the event venue on Wednesday.
He reviewed the condition of the roads and instructed officials to complete repair work as per police department guidelines to ensure smooth access.
Speaking to the media, Narayana highlighted that over Rs 5,000 crore had already been spent on Amaravati's construction between 2014 and 2019, with a significant portion invested in road infrastructure.
He recalled that it was Prime Minister Modi who laid the foundation stone for Amaravati, and blamed the previous government for halting development and leaving the state directionless. He credited Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for reviving the capital project upon assuming office.
The State government has cleared tenders worth Rs 64,000 crore, with Rs 41,000 crore worth of work already finalised and under progress. The decision to resume construction activities in the presence of the Prime Minister underscores the government's intent to see Amaravati completed as the state capital.
Modi is scheduled to arrive at Gannavaram airport around 3 pm on May 2. He will proceed to Amaravati for a 1.1 km roadshow before attending a public meeting from 4 pm to 5 pm, expected to draw a crowd of nearly five lakh. To handle the turnout, 11 parking zones and eight approach roads are being readied. Key routes are under repair for smooth traffic flow.

GST reforms to bring double bonus for Diwali: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the country's citizens will receive a double bonus during Diwali this year through the next generation GST reform that is being planned to bring down the prices of goods and services to benefit the poor and middle class. In his address at the inauguration of two major highway projects in Delhi, the Prime Minister said: 'For us, reform means the expansion of good governance, and continuous focus is being placed on reforms.' He announced that in the coming days, several major reforms will be introduced to make both life and business easier. 'As part of this effort, a next-generation reform in GST is being planned. This Diwali, citizens will receive a double bonus through the GST reform," PM Modi remarked. He said that the complete framework has been shared with all states, and expressed hope that all states will cooperate with this initiative of the government of India. The Prime Minister urged for the swift completion of the process so that 'this Diwali can be made even more special". Adding that the government aims to simplify GST further and revise tax rates, the Prime Minister highlighted that the benefits of this reform will reach every household, especially the poor and middle class. The entrepreneurs of all scales, as well as traders and businesspersons, will gain from these changes. Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry on Friday sent its proposal to the GST Council for introducing two GST rates of 5 per cent and 18 per cent across all goods going forward, according to government sources. The proposed two-slab regime will replace the current four slabs in the goods and services tax (GST) regime, doing away with the 12 per cent and 28 per cent slabs. Items that will be covered under the lower GST rate of 5 per cent will include, essential goods consumed by the common man, health-related items, handicrafts and insurance. While the other goods including manufactured products such as refrigerators and TVs will come under the 18 per cent slab. However, sin and luxury goods such as cigarettes, tobacco, sugary drinks and pan masala will continue to be under a separate GST tax bracket of 40 per cent The government is of the view that this rationalisation of GST will give a big boost to consumption and spur growth in the economy. The GST Council, which includes finance ministers of states, is likely to meet in September to approve the proposal The proposal came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort that the next generation reforms in GST will be unveiled by Diwali, which will provide "substantial" tax relief to the common man and benefit small businesses. Key areas identified for next-generation reforms include the rationalisation of tax rates to benefit all sections of society, especially the common man, women, students, middle class, and farmers. Among the proposals is the reduction of taxes on items used by the common man and aspirational goods. This would enhance affordability, boost consumption, and make essential and aspirational goods more accessible to a wider population. The end of compensation cess has created fiscal space, providing greater flexibility to rationalise and align tax rates within the GST framework for long-term sustainability, according to the ministry. The correction of inverted duty structures is aimed at aligning input and output tax rates so that there is a reduction in the accumulation of input tax credit. This would support domestic value addition.

PM Modi once again praises leadership of Haryana CM Saini
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday once again praised the leadership of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, saying under his leadership, government jobs are being provided to the youth purely on the basis of merit and with complete transparency. The Prime Minister was addressing a programme in New Delhi on the occasion of the inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway and UER-II National Highway projects connecting Delhi and Haryana at a cost of about Rs 11,000 crore. He said there was a time when Congress governments ruled Haryana, and during that period, it was almost impossible for the youth to secure government appointments without 'parchi and kharchi'. However, the BJP government has completely transformed this system. These projects include the construction of two four-lane connectivity roads to Sonipat and Bahadurgarh under the Urban Extension Road-II project. The Chief Minister said Haryana, being the industrial and agricultural hub of north India, would be the biggest beneficiary of these projects. He said these key projects will not only boost exports, imports and investments by ensuring direct connectivity from Kundli, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram and Manesar to Delhi Airport, but will also provide long-awaited relief from traffic congestion in the region.

Modi govt under pressure, won't conduct 'true caste census': Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday claimed that the Modi government announced a caste census only under pressure and it would neither get a "true" caste census done nor remove the 50 per cent cap on reservations. He made the remarks at the launch of the Voter Adhikar Yatra that started from poll-bound Bihar's Sasaram and saw the participation of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav, Vikassheel Insaan Party's Mukesh Sahani. CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, CPI(M)'s Subhashini Ali and CPI's P Sandosh Kumar also joined the launch ceremony of Gandhi's 1,300 km-long yatra. "We had said in Parliament, that we want a caste census and that the wall of 50 per cent cap on reservation should be brought down. I said it before PM Modi. "But the BJP and Narendra Modi, under pressure, announced a caste census but I know that they will not conduct a true caste census and will never bring down the wall of 50 per cent cap on reservations," Gandhi said in his address at the launch event. The Congress and INDIA bloc will get a caste census done in the whole country and remove the 50 per cent cap on reservations, Gandhi said. The Centre announced in April that caste enumeration will be part of the next population census, with the inclusion of caste details for the first time since independence. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been demanding a nationwide caste census for long. Following the Union government's announcement, the Congress said many questions arise about the government's caste census decision, especially, the intention of the government, and the deadline for conducting the census. The Voter Adhikar Yatra will cover over 20 districts in Bihar to step up the Congress's campaign against what it claims to be "vote chori". It began on Sunday with Tejashwi driving a jeep which had Gandhi, Sahani, Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar and Bhattacharya in it.
