Diamond Cleland couple celebrate 60 years of wedding bliss
A loving Cleland couple will celebrate 60 years of wedding bliss surrounded by family and friends.
John and Margaret Canning marked their diamond wedding in style with a presentation from North Lanarkshire Provost Kenneth Duffy and Depute Lord Lieutenant Terry Currie.
The Provost presented them with a flowers, cards and gift from the councillors and people of North Lanarkshire while Mr Currie presented them with a certificate on behalf of Lanarkshire Lord Lieutenant Lady Susan Haughey.
The couple's daughter Lorraine Ingram said: 'They had a fantastic day. We took them out for lunch and they were really pleased to get a visit from the Provost and Mr Currie.
'My dad knows Terry so they had a really good chat.
'We are going to have a party later this month at St Mary's Church in Cleland and I know they are really looking forward to it.'
John and Margaret met at Newarthill Miners Welfare back in 1960 when John was 16 and Margaret was 15. The couple were married at St Mary's Church in Cleland on July 10, 1965.
John began his working life as a joiner before moving into the licencing trade.
The couple had three daughters Lorraine, Suzanne and Kay as well as five grandchildren.
Lorraine added: 'I think they are just so well suited. They always told us the key to a happy marriage is to share everything.
'Mum likes to keep the house in order. She's a great home-maker. She loves her crafts and a great seamstress.
'She used to make all of our Irish dancing costumes.'

TASTE TEST: Harley's in Meliden
Last month, Harley's in Meliden was awarded a 1 out of 5 rating by the Food Standards Agency, following an inspection on June 12. It came two years after a rating of 4 in June, 2023. From word-of-mouth, I knew that Harley's was a very popular destination for many people. Inside Harley's in Meliden. Hygiene ratings do no reflect on the quality of the food served, it is concerned with cleanliness, hygiene, and food management, but I was keen to find out for myself. So I visited for breakfast. Often described as a "hidden gem," Harley's is tucked away on the Craig Fawr Industrial Estate on Meliden Road. Harley's in Meliden. The site gives in a truck stop vibe, but on entering I found a cosy cafe that was homely, clean, and welcoming. I certainly had no qualms about eating there. I was given a friendly greeting and a menu and chose my table. In the interest of a thorough review, I ordered two breakfast dishes (don't judge me!). First came Eggs Royale, which is essentially Eggs Benedict of Florentine with smoked salmon replacing the ham or spinach. Eggs Royale at Harley's in Meliden. My first impression was wow, the presentation of the dish was very good. Was I really in a small cafe on an industrial estate in North Wales? Earlier in the summer, I'd had the same dish at the lauded Porth Eirias in Colwyn Bay. It terms of presentation, Harley's compared more than favourably. In quality too, the eggs were perfectly poached with runny yolks and the muffins were the perfect combination of crunch and fluffiness. Hash browns. I also added a side of hash browns on the recommendation of one of the staff members. I was glad I did. Similar in size to McDonald's hash browns, but far less greasy. They were golden and crunchy, a far cry from the anaemic stodge that passes as hash browns elsewhere. I would recommend giving them a try. This was a very good start indeed. I also ordered the American pancake stack. Initially I went for a more dessert option with fresh fruit and cream but at the last minute switched to the classic USA combo of bacon and maple syrup. The pancakes were huge, twice the size of others I've had, with a homemade quality. Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup at Harley's. The bacon was not the crispy American-style variety that is almost used as a garnish across the Atlantic. Atop my generous stack of pancakes was a equally generous helping of good old British back bacon. I missed the crispy snap of American-style bacon, but the bacon was thick and gave the salty, umami hit that this dish needs to cut through the sweetness of the syrup. Coffee. My one regret is that I had consumed too much food. In most cafes it wouldn't have been a problem, but the portions at Harley's are very generous. I would happily return to try some of the other menu items (one at a time!). Excellent food, service, surroundings and price. A really enjoyable meal. Difficult to see how they could make it any better. Plus parking right outside the door." The scheme helps people choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving them clear information about businesses' hygiene standards. Run the scheme in partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the scheme gives businesses a rating from 5 to 0 which is displayed at their premises and online so customers make more informed choices about where to buy and eat food. 5 – hygiene standards are very good 4 – hygiene standards are good 3 – hygiene standards are generally satisfactory 2 – some improvement is necessary 1 – major improvement is necessary 0 – urgent improvement is required To sum up, the food served at Harley's is fresh, well-presented, and very tasty. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, and it was clear that many of the diners that day were regular customers. Always a good sign. With the enthusiasm and care going into the presentation food, I'm sure that the current low rating will be improved when it is inspected again.

Couple in Winnersh 'angry' as council halts tree removal plans
A woman with a rare degenerative disease has said she is angry a council halted the removal of a tree stopping her from making her home fully and John Garcia hoped to build a ramp and flat space outside their bungalow in Winnersh, Berkshire, to accommodate an electric said they needed to remove an oak tree at the end of their drive, but Wokingham Borough Council halted their plans by making a Tree Protection Order (TPO).The council has declined to comment on the case. The couple said when they initially enquired about removing the tree they were given the green light by the they said work on felling it was halted half-way through and the local authority said it must stay, applying a TPO to what was pair said they challenged the order, but it was refused by the council."It looks ridiculous, there is no public amenity value there," Ms Garcia said. "I can't walk, I've got limited standing, I'm hoisted and I'm cared for 24/7," Ms Garcia said."We have to use a manual ramp, which is shorter than what we need."Ms Garcia said she is forced to travel backwards down the ramp and there have been two occasions when she has "crashed off".She said it had taken some of her independence as she is unable to put the ramp out herself and always needs someone with her when leaving the house. The BBC has seen council emails that state that in May this year officers from the local authority were still trying to confirm whether the tree belonged to Garcia said: "It's very upsetting to be honest."He said they have sent reports and pictures to the council and explained why they needed the tree removed."They're just reluctant to help," he said. David Ellis on Lil' Nashville: Line dancing? In Chiswick? It's a hoot
It operates more as a bar than a restaurant: huge glasses of wine for about £11 a go, picklebacks at a fiver, their own-branded beer (authentically American; ie, its only flavour is 'cold'). But the food is far better than required. Contrary to the menu's suggestion of starters and mains, everything arrived together, which I mention only as portions here are likewise authentically American, ie, bloody massive. At the end of an alarming amount of pulled meat — why must this be the only hallmark of Southern food? — half a meal remained on the red-lipped enamel trays. It is not food to over-analyse: tater tots buried under both pulled pork and beef brisket, the shredded meat piled like kindling, waterlogged with barbecue sauce. Or crisp battered Nashville chicken tenders, served authentically but baffingly on a slice of cheap white bread, with slices of pickles and a sauce as hot as is wanted. Particularly good fries, too; even better stuffed in with the brisket burger. Much of the menu replicates itself with paltry disguises, but is in essence party food done well. It will fuel a night stomping and turning and pausing only for beers. I left cradling my stomach unsteadily, all that brisket having shifted my centre of gravity.
