J&K: Congress starts hunger strikes for statehood, allies missing

SRINAGAR: Congress kicked off Saturday a programme of hunger strikes to press for restoration of J&K's statehood, ploughing a lonely furrow with none of its INDIA bloc allies, including governing National Conference (NC), joining in. J&K Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra led the fasts in Srinagar coinciding with Quit India Movement's anniversary as part of a series of protests by the party in the past two months on the issue. Karra announced that Congress workers would fast in different districts of J&K from Aug 9 to Aug 21 --- when Parliament's monsoon session concludes. Amid chants of 'We want statehood', Karra pointed out that after the abrogation of Article 370 on Aug 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi govt had repeatedly promised to restore statehood and BJP leaders had publicly reaffirmed their commitment during election campaigns. 'No steps have been taken. We feel they are not serious about their promise. This has compelled us to stage protests last month in Srinagar, Jammu, and at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Now we have started this hunger strike programme,' Karra said. On July 17, Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to PM Modi to introduce a bill in the ongoing monsoon session to restore J&K's statehood. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Two days later, the party held protests in Kashmir, followed by a demonstration on the first day of the monsoon session in Delhi. The party also observed Aug 5 as a 'black day.' K arra urged political forces, irrespective of political ideologies, to join the latest protests. 'Every party is appealing for restoration of statehood. What stops them from joining us?' Karra asked in comments seen as an allusion to ally NC. Chief minister and NC vice-president Omar Abdullah had last month voiced displeasure at not being consulted or informed when Congress launched its protests in Delhi. Three days ago, Omar wrote to all national parties, including BJP, to help bring a bill in the Parliament's current session for statehood restoration. Karra, however, argued that the CM should have directly written to Modi. 'I don't know why he (Omar) preferred parties for the letter rather than the PM.'

Kerala govt weighs US tariff move

The Kerala government is set to hold a meeting to assess the impact of the hefty tariff imposed by the US on imports from India. It said that the 50 per cent tariff announced by the US will badly impact the state economy and exports. At the same time the government has advocated that the central government maintain a tough stand against the US. "The high tariffs from the US will surely impact our state, especially in the export sector. We are the largest marine producers. Apart from that, there are spices extracts, tea-coffee, cashew and other agricultural products," state finance minister KN Balagopal told ET. "But the central government should not give in under the US pressure. Once you allow them to increase tariffs on their imports, they will ask for a reduction in export duty from India." On August 16, the Kerala government will hold round-table discussions with industry experts, economists, academicians and agriculture and marine producers to assess the impact of the US tariff and the way forward. Balagopal also suggested that the Centre call a meeting of all the states to devise strategies to deal with the tariff as other states too are going to be affected. Defence production hits record Rs 1.5 lakh crore, private firms' share up

Indian defence production has crossed the ₹1.5 lakh crore mark, with private companies increasing their share in production and export of military systems, defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday. Lauding the collective effort that led to an all-time high figure of defence production worth ₹1,50,590 crore, Singh said that the milestone is a clear indicator of India's strengthening defence industrial base. Officials said that in the 2024-25 FY, there has been an 18% growth over the previous fiscal's output of ₹1.27 lakh crore, and a 90% increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was ₹79,071 crore. The numbers have been achieved as the government has gone on overdrive to promote Indian companies to enter the sector and has initiated programs like Emergency Procurement (EPs) that have given orders to a large number of startups and smaller companies as well. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs accounted for around 77% of total production, while the private sector contributed 23%. The share of the private sector has been steadily rising, from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25, and is expected to go up exponentially in the coming years as several big projects have been opened up to competitive bidding. Dozens of companies, from backgrounds as diverse as automobile component manufacturing to civil works have entered the defence manufacturing sector as opportunities grow. There has been a surge in defence exports as well, with the figure growing to ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, a 12% growth over the previous year. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
