The government on Tuesday introduced new reservation and domicile rules for the Union Territory of Ladakh, reserving 85 per cent jobs for locals and one-third of the total number of seats in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils for women.The move is aimed at safeguarding local interests as people in Ladakh have been protesting for constitutional safeguards to protect their language, culture and land after the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 was abrogated in 2019.The changes in the policies of the reservation in jobs, autonomous councils and domicile will come into effect immediately, according to multiple notifications issued by the government.Under the new rules, those who have resided for a period of 15 years in the UT or studied for a period of seven years and appeared in class 10th or 12th examination in an educational institution located in the UT shall be domicile of Ladakh for the purposes of appointment to any post under the UT or under a local or other authority other than cantonment Board.Children of Central government officials, All India Services Officers, officials of Public Sector Undertaking and autonomous body of Central government, Public Sector Banks, officials of statutory bodies, officials of Central Universities and recognised research institutes of Central government who have served in the UT for a total period of 10 years are also eligible for domicile.The reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections continues to be 10 per cent.In another notification, the government said that in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils Act, 1997, not less than one-third of the total number of seats in the Council shall be reserved for women and such seats may be allotted by rotation to different territorial constituencies.The rotation of constituencies reserved for women shall be made on the basis of serial number allotted to each constituencies by notification in the official gazette.A high level committee led by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai was first constituted in January 2023 to address the concerns of the people in Ladakh. It held several meetings with the representatives of Ladakh to find an amicable solution to their demands.In October 2024, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk also sat on an indefinite fast in Delhi to press for their demands After that, talks were held with civil society leaders from Ladakh on December 3, 2024 and again on January 15 this year and on May 27.

J&K: Congress starts hunger strikes for statehood, allies missing
SRINAGAR: Congress kicked off Saturday a programme of hunger strikes to press for restoration of J&K's statehood, ploughing a lonely furrow with none of its INDIA bloc allies, including governing National Conference (NC), joining in. J&K Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra led the fasts in Srinagar coinciding with Quit India Movement's anniversary as part of a series of protests by the party in the past two months on the issue. Kerala govt weighs US tariff move
The Kerala government is set to hold a meeting to assess the impact of the hefty tariff imposed by the US on imports from India. It said that the 50 per cent tariff announced by the US will badly impact the state economy and exports. At the same time the government has advocated that the central government maintain a tough stand against the US. "The high tariffs from the US will surely impact our state, especially in the export sector. We are the largest marine producers. Apart from that, there are spices extracts, tea-coffee, cashew and other agricultural products," state finance minister KN Balagopal told ET. "But the central government should not give in under the US pressure. Once you allow them to increase tariffs on their imports, they will ask for a reduction in export duty from India." Defence production hits record Rs 1.5 lakh crore, private firms' share up
Indian defence production has crossed the ₹1.5 lakh crore mark, with private companies increasing their share in production and export of military systems, defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday. Lauding the collective effort that led to an all-time high figure of defence production worth ₹1,50,590 crore, Singh said that the milestone is a clear indicator of India's strengthening defence industrial base. Officials said that in the 2024-25 FY, there has been an 18% growth over the previous fiscal's output of ₹1.27 lakh crore, and a 90% increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was ₹79,071 crore. The numbers have been achieved as the government has gone on overdrive to promote Indian companies to enter the sector and has initiated programs like Emergency Procurement (EPs) that have given orders to a large number of startups and smaller companies as well. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs accounted for around 77% of total production, while the private sector contributed 23%. The share of the private sector has been steadily rising, from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25, and is expected to go up exponentially in the coming years as several big projects have been opened up to competitive bidding.
