J&K: Congress starts hunger strikes for statehood, allies missing
J&K Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra led the fasts in Srinagar coinciding with Quit India Movement's anniversary as part of a series of protests by the party in the past two months on the issue. Karra announced that Congress workers would fast in different districts of J&K from Aug 9 to Aug 21 --- when Parliament's monsoon session concludes.
Amid chants of 'We want statehood', Karra pointed out that after the abrogation of Article 370 on Aug 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi govt had repeatedly promised to restore statehood and BJP leaders had publicly reaffirmed their commitment during election campaigns.
'No steps have been taken. We feel they are not serious about their promise. This has compelled us to stage protests last month in Srinagar, Jammu, and at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Now we have started this hunger strike programme,' Karra said.
On July 17, Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to PM Modi to introduce a bill in the ongoing monsoon session to restore J&K's statehood.

Two days later, the party held protests in Kashmir, followed by a demonstration on the first day of the monsoon session in Delhi. The party also observed Aug 5 as a 'black day.'
K
arra urged political forces, irrespective of political ideologies, to join the latest protests. 'Every party is appealing for restoration of statehood. What stops them from joining us?' Karra asked in comments seen as an allusion to ally NC.
Chief minister and NC vice-president Omar Abdullah had last month voiced displeasure at not being consulted or informed when Congress launched its protests in Delhi. Three days ago, Omar wrote to all national parties, including BJP, to help bring a bill in the Parliament's current session for statehood restoration.
Karra, however, argued that the CM should have directly written to Modi. 'I don't know why he (Omar) preferred parties for the letter rather than the PM.'

With polls in sight, Bengal BJP revives Durga Puja at Kolkata's EZCC after 2 yrs
The BJP in West Bengal will organise Durga Puja at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Kolkata this year. The 'khunti puja' (worship of the pole that marks the beginning of pandal construction) was held on Sunday, with several BJP leaders in attendance, including party state president Samik Bhattacharya, cultural cell chief Rudranil Ghosh, and former MP Rupa Ganguly. While the event is officially being organised by the 'West Bengal Cultural Manch,' its close ties to the BJP are evident, with key party figures leading the arrangements. Speaking at the khunti puja, state president Samik Bhattacharya stressed the cultural and apolitical nature of the festival and said, 'Maa Durga is inseparable from the Hindu Bengali diaspora.' He highlighted Bengal's historical tradition of communal harmony during festivals, citing examples of Muslims participating in Durga Puja. He mentioned about a 300-year-old puja in Basirhat where a Muslim family, which has been living there for generations actively participates in the puja. 'In Bengal, Muharram processions and Durga Puja immersion must take place in the same lane at the same time peacefully,' he said, invoking a message of unity. On being selected as the new president of the West Bengal BJP, Bhattacharya had made similar statements regarding Durga Puja and Muharram BJP's revival of Durga Puja at EZCC is seen as strategic outreach to tap into Bengali voters' cultural and religious sentiments ahead of 2026 polls, strategy that was last employed before the 2021 Assembly elections. This year's Puja marks a revival of a tradition that was initiated by the BJP in 2020, when the party had organised a grand puja at the EZCC, which was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The puja was held again in 2021, but enthusiasm reportedly waned after the BJP's electoral defeat. According to tradition, a puja, once started, must be performed for at least three consecutive years. Following this custom, the Durga Puja at EZCC was held for three consecutive years, concluding in 2022. It was then discontinued in 2023 and 2024, with a smaller, more subdued celebration held at Oikyatan in 2023. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Day after heavy rain brings parts of Delhi to halt, AAP alleges ‘desilting scam' linked to ex-chief secy
A day after heavy rain brought parts of the Capital to a standstill, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday accused the BJP-led government of destroying documents to shield former chief secretary Naresh Kumar in a 'drain desilting scam'. The Delhi BJP, however, dismissed the allegations as a 'political stunt.' Citing an RTI reply, Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed Chief Secretary Dharmendra's office denied receiving his complaint on the matter, despite copies being available with the reporters and on social media. 'This is a direct criminal offence…When I wrote this letter last year, I held a press conference and posted it on social media. The BJP government is now saying they have no record of it. This is an attempt to hide corruption, shield Naresh Kumar, and destroy evidence,' Bharadwaj alleged at a press conference. The AAP leader criticised the BJP-led government for failing to resolve the Capital's waterlogging woes. 'Seven people died in one incident when a wall collapsed during rain yesterday. In another heart-wrenching case, a two-and-a-half-year-old drowned in an open sewer outside his house on Raksha Bandhan,' he said. The AAP leader said that the Delhi High Court had ordered a third-party independent audit of desilting works, but claimed the audit had not been carried out despite repeated reminders to the Chief Secretary and letters to the Union Home Ministry. 'When I filed an RTI on July 21 seeking file notings, correspondence, and directions related to my June 13, 2024 complaint, the Chief Secretary's office replied on July 29 that no such letter had been received. This is proof that documents are being destroyed,' Bharadwaj said. In response, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said that the Kejriwal government had a poor record on desilting. 'Before accusing us, Saurabh Bharadwaj should clarify whether it's not true that between 2015 and 2018, due to the Kejriwal government's failure to carry out desilting, an NGO had to approach the Delhi High Court demanding an audit,' Sachdeva said. He alleged that 'scams' in the name of desilting were committed annually between 2015 and 2024 during AAP rule, and 'under the protection' of the AAP government, involving officials from the Public Works Department, Flood Control Department, and Delhi Jal Board, along with local MLAs. Sachdeva also questioned Bharadwaj's claim about the missing letter. 'The reality of the Kejriwal government was that they would tweet about writing letters to the central government or the LG, but conveniently 'forget' to send them through official channels. Possibly, Bharadwaj did the same — because government offices do not lose letters,' he said.

US Vs BRICS: Why Did Donald Trump Go Silent After Threatening India With An 8-Hour Ultimatum?
Washington/New Delhi: When US President Donald Trump slapped an additional 25% tariff on India over its purchase of Russian oil, he warned that things would unfold dramatically within eight hours. He said, 'Wait for eight hours and see what happens.' Many expected more tariffs or sanctions against India soon after. But more than 40 hours have passed, and Trump has remained silent. Behind this sudden pause, several significant developments took place. India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a visit to China. Putin and Modi spoke on the phone. Brazil's President Lula da Silva also called Modi. All these events share one connection: Brazil, India, Russia and China are founding members of BRICS. The question arises: did Trump retract his aggressive stance after BRICS showed unity? Experts believe BRICS countries are preparing a major announcement, possibly about a new currency that could shake the US dollar's global dominance. Contributing nearly 35.6% to global GDP, BRICS seems to be uniting firmly against Trump's tariff policies. How Are BRICS Standing United Against US? Though BRICS has expanded, many new members remain close to China, with most maintaining friendly ties with India, like the UAE. South Africa remains a consistent member. Experts say conversations among BRICS leaders have moved beyond formalities, including lengthy talks between Modi and Putin. Brazil's Lula and Modi discussed boosting bilateral trade to $20 billion by 2030. Modi's upcoming visit to China after seven years signals a thaw in relations and possibly a fresh chapter. Even China's state media, Global Times, appears to soften its tone on India, defending it against Trump's tariffs. Trump openly threatened a 10% tariff on any BRICS nation opposing U.S. interests. India called the tariffs 'unfair' and said its ties with Russia are based on trust, not external views. Brazil's Lula rejected direct talks with Trump and announced using BRICS chairmanship for a collective response. The key question remains: as BRICS grows stronger, has Trump stepped back or is he preparing a new counterstrategy? If BRICS announces a new currency, it will pose a serious challenge to the United States. India has been the main obstacle to the BRICS currency plan so far. Can Cryptocurrency Counter BRICS? Once a critic of cryptocurrencies, Trump now seems to be steering the United States toward becoming a crypto capital, possibly to counter the BRICS currency threat. The coordination among BRICS countries is deepening. Lula plans to visit India next year. Modi's call for a 'people-centric partnership' for the Global South directly counters Trump's policies. Meanwhile, India's growing ties with Russia and PM Modi's participation in the upcoming SCO summit in China hint at shifting strategic priorities amid deteriorating US relations. Analyst Mario Navfal states, 'The world's largest democracy and South America's biggest player (Brazil) are now playing hardball with the United States.' Trump, in nut shell, has been forced to face the reality of BRICS closing ranks and challenging dollar supremacy. The Global South, which once faltered due to diverging agendas, is now united, signalling rapid changes in the global order. Experts predict that in coming months, BRICS will unveil new policies and plans that will highlight a move toward a multipolar world challenging American dominance.
