Magnus Carlsen Beats ChatGPT in Chess Without Losing a Piece
The world's top chess player defeated ChatGPT in an online match in only 53 moves.
Magnus Carlsen won the game without losing a single piece, while ChatGPT lost all its pawns, screenshots the Norwegian grandmaster shared on X showed. ChatGPT resigned the match.
'I sometimes get bored while travelling,' Carlsen captioned the post.
'That was methodical, clean, and sharp. Well played!' ChatGPT said to him, according to the screenshots Carlsen posted.
Carlsen told the AI bot that he thought it 'played really well in the opening,' but ultimately 'failed to follow it up correctly.' He went on to ask ChatGPT for feedback on his performance.
'Your play showed several strong traits,' ChatGPT told him. It complimented him for his opening, patience, tactical awareness, and endgame technique. It estimated his classical strength to be around 1800-2000 FIDE or USCF, though the AI bot acknowledged it could be higher.
Both FIDE and USCF ratings calculate chess players' skill levels based on their performance in official tournaments using the Elo rating system, which takes into account the outcomes of matches and the rating of each player going in. Under the system, matches with unexpected results—such as those in which lower-ranked players defeat higher-ranked ones—have a greater impact on players' ratings.
FIDE ratings are managed by global chess's governing body, the International Chess Federation (FIDE), and USCF ratings by the United States Chess Federation. Carlsen's actual FIDE rating is 2839, making him the top-rated player in the world.
Carlsen is widely considered to be the best chess player in history. The 34-year-old has won the World Chess Championship five times, most recently in 2021. He has not competed in the championship since then, previously saying, 'I don't have any inclination to play" in it.

This year brought some major personal changes. Finally taking time to settle into this new chapter and figure out who I am and what I truly need." "Change is not easy, but I believe everything is the best arrangement," she added. Head Shaolin monk investigated for alleged embezzlement and affairs
Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the world-renowned Shaolin Temple, is being investigated for offences including embezzlement, "improper relationships with multiple women" and "having illegitimate children", the temple said. In a statement on Sunday, Shaolin temple said multiple departments were jointly investigating Mr Shi and more information would be made public in due course. The 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple, located in a mountain range in central China's Henan province, attracts thousands of disciples every year - some from across the world. Mr Shi, who has been Shaolin Temple's abbot since 1999, has earned the nickname "CEO monk" for transforming the institution into a global brand. Under his leadership, the temple started opening schools outside China and formed a travelling troupe of monks who performed Shaolin kung fu shows - the temple's signature style of martial arts. News of Mr Shi being investigated was the most read topic on Weibo on Monday morning. The last post on his own Weibo account, which has more than 880,000 followers and had been updated daily with Buddhist teachings, is dated 24 July. Mr Shi also came under scrutiny in 2015 for allegedly having sexual relations with women and embezzling temple funds. He also allegedly received expensive gifts from companies and local governments, including a Volkswagen SUV and a robe with gold thread. He was investigated at the time for embezzlement and fathering several children, but was later cleared of the charges. In an interview with BBC Chinese in 2015, Mr Shi was asked about the allegations of corruption and affairs with women. "If there were a problem, it would have surfaced long ago," he said at the time. Shaolin Temple also came under fire in 2015 over a plan to build a nearly $300m temple complex which also included a hotel, a kung fu school and a golf course. The name "Shaolin" has gained prominence in pop culture over the years, including being the title of a 1982 film starring Jet Li. The temple is referenced in songs by American hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan and inspired a spinoff of the video game Mortal Kombat.
