‘It's a joke' — Enzo Maresca fumes after Chelsea's two-hour weather delay
A furious Enzo Maresca appeared to question the suitability of the United States to host the Club World Cup after Chelsea's 4-1 victory over Benfica became the sixth match of the tournament to be interrupted by severe storms.
Chelsea's match was delayed nearly two hours due to a thunderstorm near the Bank of America stadium in Charlotte. The match was suspended in the 86th minute with Chelsea looking comfortable and leading 1-0, however after the break, Benfica managed to take the game to extra-time courtesy of a penalty from Ángel Di María.
Chelsea went on to win 4-1 in extra time, helped by a strong response and a red card for Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni, but Maresca was unhappy with the length of the delay, calling it a 'joke' and insisting that it changed the game and made it difficult to coach.
'After the break, the game changed completely,' Maresca said. 'I think for me personally it's not football. It's already [six] games that they suspended. I think it's a joke to be honest, it's not football. It's not for us. You cannot be inside. It's completely something new, but I struggle to understand. I can understand that for security reasons, you are to suspend the game. But if you suspend [six] games, that means that probably is not the right place to do this competition.'
The thunderstorm meant that FIFA had to implement a 'seek cover' protocol as players left the field and supporters moved inside and onto the concourses.
The protocol meant that the match was delayed by 30 minutes but if a lightning strike was detected to have struck the ground within a ten-mile radius of the stadium, the 30-minute clock was reset. Ultimately the delay lasted for one hour and 56 minutes.
This was the second longest delay of the tournament due to weather, with Benfica participants in the longest delay, a two-hour break during their 6-0 win over Auckland City in Orlando. There have been four other delays at the tournament so far due to storms, including Ulsan vs Mamelodi Sundowns in Orlando, Red Bull Salzburg against Pachuca in Cincinnati, Boca Juniors against Auckland City in Nashville and Palmeiras v Al Ahly in New Jersey. Other matches have taken place in high heat.
The match in Charlotte, though, would become the longest match of the tournament so far, where a 4pm kick off ended at 8.38pm local time.
Asked whether he was referring to the stadium in Charlotte specifically regarding suitability to host the tournament, Maresca said: 'No, no, no. I'm saying that. I ask you, if in this competition, they already suspended six, seven, eight games, probably there is something that is not working well. Because in a football game, it's not normal to suspend a game.'
Pushed on whether the delays are bad for a new competition like the Club World Cup, Maresca said: 'Please, don't misunderstand me. I said it's a fantastic competition. It's a Club World Cup. It's top. We are happy to be in the last eight. We are happy to win all these kind of things. But something happens, [six] games suspended.
'In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero, probably. In Europe, how many games? Zero. We are here, two weeks, they're already suspended [six] games. There is some problem for me personally. But I'm talking as a manager. Because when you are two hours inside and you try to keep them in the game, but for two hours, they are speaking with the family outside for safety reasons. They are eating something, they are playing, they are laughing. How can you keep them two hours inside, focused? It's a joke. That's why I said it. Then we are happy. We are happy to be here. We are happy to be in this competition. But it's something that it's not normal for.'

Chelsea players kept themselves warm during the break by using exercise bikes in the dressing room.
'Two hours inside; people speak with the family outside, if they were good, the security, people eating, people laughing, people talking on the mobile, It's two hours,' Maresca said. 'That's why I said it's not football.
'It's something that you struggle to understand. But we tried to go out, continue in the same way, knowing that it was difficult. It's not random that for 85 minutes, we didn't concede. nothing. And then for five minutes, we conceded a few chances. Why? It's because it started a completely different game. It's not normal. It's not football.'
Benfica managed to equalise from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time after Malo Gusto was adjudged to have handled Nicolás Otamendi's header. By the letter of the law it is a penalty, due to his arm's outstretched position, but the French defender could not see the direction of play having leapt to deal with the initial cross and it felt like an extremely harsh decision. VAR sent the referee, Slavko Vincic, to the monitor and he awarded the penalty.
Moises Caicedo said the players were upset about the decision. 'We thought it wasn't a penalty because he didn't look at the ball,' he said. 'He couldn't do anything.'
Chelsea will face Palmeiras in the quarter-final of the Club World Cup next Friday, in Philadelphia.

Bullpen ready to contribute as Cubs chase series win vs. Astros
June 29 - While the Cubs' seven-run fourth inning laid the foundation for an easy 12-3 road victory over the host Houston Astros on Saturday, how Chicago was able to set up its bullpen for the series rubber match on Sunday was tied to the opener. Veteran right-hander Chris Flexen worked four shutout innings of relief after the Cubs fell into a seven-run deficit on Friday and his performance enabled Chicago to preserve their bullpen for the final two games of the series. The blowout victory on Saturday, combined with what Flexen produced in the opener, leaves the Cubs with their high-leverage relievers available for the finale. "In your bullpen, the guys are connected to each other," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. "Chris made somebody else more effective (Saturday and Sunday), and I think that's a big deal. "There's no statistic for that, there's no metric, there's no analytics for that. He made our team better (Saturday), he made a particular player better, and that's in addition to throwing four scoreless innings." Right-hander Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.47 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Cubs on Sunday. Taillon has dropped back-to-back starts after winning five consecutive outings through mid-June, recording a 14.63 ERA and .379 opponent batting average in those outings. He allowed a season-high eight runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over a season-low-tying four innings in an 8-7 road loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Taillon is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five career starts against his hometown Astros. In his last appearance against Houston, he allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-3 road win on April 24, 2024. Left-hander Framber Valdez (8-4, 2.88) has the starting assignment for the Astros in the rubber match. Despite tossing seven scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, Valdez had his streak of six consecutive starts with a winning decision snapped when he did not factor into the decision of a 1-0 home victory. However, Valdez remains unbeaten over his last nine starts (7-0 with a 1.89 ERA) with 65 strikeouts over 62 innings. The Astros are 9-0 in those games. Valdez has faced the Cubs once previously. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in four innings but did not factor into the decision of a 6-4 win on May 15, 2023. Given their spate of injuries to starting pitchers, the Astros sorely need veteran right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. to serve as a reliable member of the rotation for the second half of the season. McCullers returned from a 15-day stint on the injured list and allowed eight runs on seven hits and four walks while recording one strikeout and only 10 outs. He threw 79 pitches. It marked the eighth start of the season for McCullers, who missed the previous two seasons with injuries. With right-hander Hunter Brown and Valdez the only experienced options currently in the rotation, the Astros are hopeful that McCullers can stay healthy and return to past form. "Just the fact that we got him back out there and got him close to 80 pitches (is important)," Astros manager Joe Espada said of McCullers. "It's just one that we've got to put behind him and get ready for the next start." --Field Level Media

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: Expert lip-reader exposes Chelsea star Levi Colwill's shocking x-rated rant at referee as frustrations over TWO-HOUR rain delay and controversial Benfica penalty boil over
A lip reader has revealed what was said by Levi Colwill during the Chelsea star's furious rant towards a referee. The Blues defender was livid after Benfica were awarded a 93rd-minute penalty during their Club World Cup last-16 clash on Saturday. Angel Di Maria converted the spot kick to make it 1-1 and send the game to extra time. But the Portuguese side could not continue their momentum into the final half hour, and Chelsea responded by scoring three goals to win the game 4-1 and tee up a quarter-final clash with Brazilian club Palmeiras. The penalty came after a storm warning triggered a lightning protocol involving a full evacuation and a 30‑minute suspension, which reset with every new strike - delaying the match for 1 hour and 53 minutes. The lightning‑ridden chaos stretched the game to nearly five hours in total, undoubtedly fuelling the mounting frustrations at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chelsea conceded a penalty after VAR flagged Malo Gusto for a handball. By this point, Colwill had reached his breaking point. I fell in love with Levi Colwill from this moment more and more. Proper captain material. At some point I was thinking, 'Leave the ref,' but man refused and said his piece. — SHAYEE 𒀭 (@tier_first) June 29, 2025 Levi Colwill let out a furious rant at the referee after Chelsea conceded a penalty vs Benfica 'F***ing s***, you're f***ing s***, you're s*** referee… disgrace,' the 22-year-old told official Slavko Vincic, while pointing a finger in his face. Despite Chelsea going on to win the game, Colwill was not the only one who was in angered spirits, with manager Enzo Maresca also airing out his frustrations after the game. 'For me personally, it's not football,' the Italian tactician said. 'It's already seven, eight, nine games that they suspended. 'I think it's a joke, to be honest. It's not football. It's not for us. You cannot be inside. If you suspend seven or eight games that means that probably is not the right place to do this competition.' This was the sixth weather‑related stoppage at venues across the US during the Club World Cup. Other games suspended due to storms have been Benfica versus Auckland City in Orlando, Ulsan versus Mamelodi Sundowns in Orlando, Red Bull Salzburg versus Pachuca in Cincinnati, Boca Juniors versus Auckland City in Nashville, and Palmeiras versus Al Ahly in New Jersey.

Inter Milan change stance on Rasmus Hojlund transfer as Man Utd dealt fresh blow
Inter Milan contacted Manchester United to discuss the availability of Rasmus Hojlund in the summer transfer window but a permanent move to San Siro now looks unlikely Manchester United's hopes that Inter Milan would follow up their enquiry with a bid for misfiring £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund have taken a huge hit. Inter targeted two new strikers after finishing second in Serie A and then being hammered by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Final. But they have spent £20m on Parma's Ange-Yoan Bonny and are ready to give teenager Francesco Pio Esposito more game-time. He capped a fine performance against River Plate in the Club World Cup with his first goal for them. That would close the door on a permanent move for Denmark international Hojlund, although Inter could still offer a 12-month loan option with an obligation to buy. United are willing to listen to offers for every member of their squad this summer after their disastrous season. The 22-year-old has also been linked with a move to Napoli, although their first-choice target is Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. Hojlund expects to start the season with United, having been asked about his future during the June international window. "I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United," he told Danish broadcaster TV2. "I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway." "I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season." Hojlund also enjoys working with Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim, as he declared in March: "I'm focused on the task with Ruben because that project is incredibly exciting. Should Manchester United sell Rasmus Hojlund? Have your say in the comments section. " Erik [ten Hag] was of course one of the reasons why I moved to Manchester United. He was doing something good and was a talented coach, but it didn't work out, and that's how it is. "I'm still very happy to be at Manchester United. It's the club I've always dreamed of playing for. And I'm really happy for Ruben. He's a cool character and a cool person." Amorim has also suggested that we're yet to see the best of the Dane, saying last month: "I'm happy. Of course all the team has to improve, but the way he runs, he fights for every ball, loses a lot of duels, wins some duels. But he is improving. I'm really happy with him, he just needs to continue working hard and better things will come."
