Inter Milan change stance on Rasmus Hojlund transfer as Man Utd dealt fresh blow
Inter Milan contacted Manchester United to discuss the availability of Rasmus Hojlund in the summer transfer window but a permanent move to San Siro now looks unlikely
Manchester United's hopes that Inter Milan would follow up their enquiry with a bid for misfiring £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund have taken a huge hit. Inter targeted two new strikers after finishing second in Serie A and then being hammered by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Final.
But they have spent £20m on Parma's Ange-Yoan Bonny and are ready to give teenager Francesco Pio Esposito more game-time. He capped a fine performance against River Plate in the Club World Cup with his first goal for them.
That would close the door on a permanent move for Denmark international Hojlund, although Inter could still offer a 12-month loan option with an obligation to buy. United are willing to listen to offers for every member of their squad this summer after their disastrous season.
The 22-year-old has also been linked with a move to Napoli, although their first-choice target is Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. Hojlund expects to start the season with United, having been asked about his future during the June international window.
"I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United," he told Danish broadcaster TV2. "I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway."
"I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season."
Hojlund also enjoys working with Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim, as he declared in March: "I'm focused on the task with Ruben because that project is incredibly exciting.

" Erik [ten Hag] was of course one of the reasons why I moved to Manchester United. He was doing something good and was a talented coach, but it didn't work out, and that's how it is.
"I'm still very happy to be at Manchester United. It's the club I've always dreamed of playing for. And I'm really happy for Ruben. He's a cool character and a cool person."
Amorim has also suggested that we're yet to see the best of the Dane, saying last month: "I'm happy. Of course all the team has to improve, but the way he runs, he fights for every ball, loses a lot of duels, wins some duels. But he is improving. I'm really happy with him, he just needs to continue working hard and better things will come."

Inter knocked out of Club World Cup in last 16 by Brazilians Fluminense
Brazilian side Fluminense stunned Champions League finalists Inter by knocking them out of the Club World Cup with a 2-0 victory in the last 16 in Charlotte. The reign of new head coach Cristian Chivu, who took over following Simone Inzaghi's departure just days after that humbling 5-0 loss to Paris St Germain a month ago, has not started well as they exited the tournament before the quarter-finals. Goals from Germán Cano, after just three minutes, and Hércules in the third added minute at the end of the game sealed the Serie A side's fate. In the quarter-finals, Fluminense will face either Manchester City or Al Hilal, who were due to play each other later on Monday. If City are their opponents, it would be a rematch of the 2023 Club World Cup final, which City won 4-0 in Saudi Arabia. The match was played in front of a crowd of just 20,030 in the final game at the 74,867-capacity Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Two of the other three games at the stadium have also gone ahead with more than 40,000 empty seats. Fluminense's 44-year-old goalkeeper Fábio made four saves to seal one of the most famous wins in the Rio de Janeiro club's history, with 40-year-old former Chelsea centre-half Thiago Silva also producing a fine performance at the back. The result ensured there will be two Brazilian quarter-finalists in the first edition of this expanded tournament, with Palmeiras already having won through to face Chelsea in the last eight. Fluminense were the better side for the opening hour of another sweltering last-16 encounter, then suffered through increased Inter pressure for the final 20 minutes to keep their third clean sheet of the tournament. Lautaro Martínez came closest to pulling Inter Milan level, forcing Fábio into saves in the 80th and 82nd minutes, then striking the upright with another low effort only seconds later. In the 93rd minute, Inter's at times shaky defence was exposed for a second time. Hércules found himself free at the edge of the 18-yard box following a throw-in, and drove a composed, low finish into the bottom right corner, sending most of the crowd into delirium. Cano had put the Brazilians in front in just the third minute during a shaky start from Inter. Jhon Arias's cross from the right took a deflection that caused defenders and goalkeeper Yann Sommer to hesitate. Cano reacted superbly, continuing his run to meet the ball and angling his header from close range downward and through Sommer's legs. And in the 39th minute, Ignacio thought he had scored, only to be ruled fractionally offside by the automated review system. The pattern of more Inter possession but more dangerous Fluminense chances continued early in the second half, and Sommer reacted superbly in the 62nd minute to dive and push Arias's effort from beyond the penalty area just around his left post. After the game Martínez was critical of Inter's performance. 'I gave everything on the pitch, in every training session, and I'm really sorry,' he said on Dazn. 'I don't want to lose, and I feel bad for the team. But I want to say one thing: you have to want to stay at Inter. We're fighting for important goals, and whoever wants to stay here needs to show it. 'Whoever doesn't, should leave. We're here to do everything we can for Inter, and I've seen a lot of things that, as captain, I didn't like. I want to fight for our objectives because we're part of a great club, and I want to keep competing at the top.'

Former Chelsea captain Thiago Silva, 40, breaks down in tears after his Fluminense side stun Inter Milan to reach Club World Cup quarter-finals
Fluminense captain Thiago Silva was visibly emotional after his side progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup at the expense of Inter Milan. The 40-year-old former Chelsea skipper played the full 90 minutes as Fluminense beat the UEFA Champions League finalists 2-0 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Fluminense, who qualified for this summer's tournament by winning the Copa Libertadores in 2023, went ahead after just three minutes when German Cano stooped to head home a deflected cross from close range. Inter dominated possession and registered 16 shots as they tried to force their way back into the contest. But only four of those efforts forced keeper Fabio into work, before substitute Hercules wrapped up a famous victory with a cool finish from 18 yards in added time. That goal sparked wild celebrations in the stands at Bank of America Stadium, with many fans seen crying tears of joy. Silva, who was also pictured in tears, later told DAZN: 'I'm very proud with my team, with my team-mates. 'This game is like this, too hard to play against the Inter team, you know? They played the Champions League final a month ago. 'It is not easy to play like this. It's too hot today to play football. The time is not good, but it is like this. 'Fluminense are a big team.' Silva's Fluminense side — who progressed from Group F with five points after drawing with Borussia Dortmund and Mamelodi Sundowns, and beating Ulsan HD — will now face either Manchester City or Al-Hilal in the last eight.

Phil Giles ‘wouldn't be massively surprised' if Bryan Mbeumo stays at Brentford
The Cameroon winger, 25, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who submitted an improved bid in the region of £60million around a week ago. Giles, speaking on Monday afternoon at the unveiling of new head coach Keith Andrews, said the London club would be 'open' to a deal which was 'right for us financially', but insisted Mbeumo staying put was 'not off the table'. 'In terms of expectations, I don't actually know where that will end up,' Giles said. 'I think we made our point clear that Bryan had such a great season and if he earned a massive move now, which is right for us financially, then we would be open for that, but if he's here next season I wouldn't be massively surprised, it would be welcomed, we would be delighted. Keith Andrews has taken the Brentford helm (Maja Smiejkowska/PA) 'It would save me a massive headache, frankly, and that's not off the table, so let's see how it goes.' Brentford scored a club-record 66 Premier League goals last season en route to an impressive 10th-place finish, with Mbeumo's 20-goal haul a big factor. 'With Bryan, he had 20 Premier League goals last season so we expected lots of interest and there has been lots of interest,' Giles added. 'He has his own views for the next part of his career and where he will end up, which is fair, because it's his career and those conversations have been going on for the last couple of weeks.' If Mbeumo does leave, he would add to a growing list of summer departures from Brentford, with manager Thomas Frank joining Tottenham, goalkeeper Mark Flekken heading to Bayer Leverkusen and midfielder Christian Norgaard 'more likely than not', in Giles' words, to leave.
