Mumbai-Ahmedabad in 2 hours! India's first bullet train service to commence soon, says rail minister Ashwini Vaisnaw
Speaking after he virtually flagged off the Ayodhya Express, Rewa-Pune Express, and Jabalpur-Raipur Express from Bhavnagar, he stated that the Mumbai-Ahemedabad bullet train, which will cut the journey between the two cities to two hours and seven minutes, will 'commence very soon'. India's first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will span 508 kilometres.
It will start from the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) area in Mumbai, and connect to Gujarat's Vapi, Surat, Anand, Vadodara and Ahmedabad, running at a high speed of 320 km per hour.
'The first bullet train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will start very soon, and the work on the project is going on at a fast pace. When it starts running, the journey from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will take only two hours and seven minutes,' Vaishnaw said.
The minister also sahred details of the upcoming railway projects in Gujarat, including a new train between Porbandar and Rajkot, a ₹ 135-crore coach maintenance facility at Ranavav station, a railway flyover in Porbandar city, two Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and a container terminal at an upcoming port in Bhavnagar.
Besides these, he added that there are several new projects in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and praised the 'double-engine government' in these states making projects progress rapidly.
'In 11 years of the Narendra Modi government, 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been laid, with almost 12 km of new tracks built in the country daily. Around 1,300 railway stations are being redeveloped in the country, which is something that has never been done before. No one has undertaken such a big work to date. When railway stations are renovated in developed countries, they are done systematically by closing down all stations and trains,' Vaishnaw added.
He also gave an update on the trains introduced by the Modi government — Vande Bharat Express, Amrit Bharat Express, and Namo Bharat Express.
'Eight Amrit Bharat trains have been launched so far. They have features like Vande Bharat trains, but the fare is low. These trains have been constructed using new-age technology, and you will be surprised to hear the emotions expressed by passengers using these trains,' he said.

Scientific coal mining begins in Meghalaya; two coal blocks commence production
Shillong, Aug 7 (PTI) Coal mining has officially resumed in Meghalaya under scientific and regulated frameworks, a decade after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a ban on such activity in the state in 2014, an official statement said on Thursday. Marking a significant shift towards environmentally sustainable practices, two coal blocks in Meghalaya - Saryngkham A Coal Block in East Jaintia Hills district and Pyndengshahlang Coal Block in West Khasi Hills district - have commenced production after receiving statutory approvals from the Ministry of Coal. The Saryngkham A Coal Block was granted opening permission on March 10, 2025, and began production on June 3, 2025, while the Pyndengshahlang Coal Block received permission on May 2, 2025, and commenced operations on June 5, 2025, the Coal Ministry said in a statement. The NGT had imposed a ban on coal mining in Meghalaya in April 2014, citing widespread environmental degradation, water contamination, and unsafe working conditions caused by unregulated rat-hole mining. The tribunal had observed that such practices violated environmental laws and posed serious health and safety risks to workers and local communities. The resumption of mining in the state follows years of legal and regulatory efforts to establish a framework for scientific, legal, and environmentally sound mining practices, the ministry said. "This milestone underscores the Ministry's commitment to promoting legal, safe, and scientific mining practices while enhancing the contribution of the North-East to the country's energy needs," the statement said. The Coal Ministry has called upon all state governments to cooperate in furthering scientific coal mining and improving coal transportation infrastructure in the region, which is expected to strengthen energy security and support economic development in North-Eastern states, it added.

Bill aimed at boosting coastal shipping gets Parliament's nod
The Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, aimed at boosting domestic participation in maritime trade, got parliamentary approval on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha cleared it through voice vote amid continued protests by opposition lawmakers demanding a discussion on the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The legislation, passed by the Lok Sabha on 3 April, will now go for the Presidential assent to become a law. The Coastal Shipping Bill aims to regulate vessels moving along the Indian coast and eases compliance for domestic ships as the country looks to ensure supply-chain security. The Bill will consolidate and amend the law relating to the regulation of coastal shipping, promote coastal trade and encourage domestic participation. It will also ensure that the country's fleet of coastal ships grows and coastal shipping picks up. Replying to a debate on the Bill, Union minister of ports, shipping, and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the Bill is a major reform initiative by the government that will unlock the full potential of the country's vast and strategic coastline. The ministry targets increasing coastal cargo traffic to 230 million metric tonnes by 2030. Under the legislation, coastal waters mean the territorial waters of India, along with adjoining maritime zones. Territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles from the coast (about 22km). The adjoining maritime zones extend up to 200 nautical miles (about 370km). The Bill seeks to regulate all types of vessels, including ships, boats, sailing vessels, and mobile offshore drilling units, whether self-propelled or not. It does away with licences for Indian-owned ships. The Bill requires the Union government to prepare a National Coastal and Inland Shipping Strategic Plan within two years of the commencement of the Act.
