Be Your Best and Skippylongstocking give Ortiz and Joseph a stakes double at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Be Your Best led all the way to earn her first Grade 1 victory in the $300,000 Gamely Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths Monday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Be Your Best ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:46.26, the fastest time in the race for fillies and mares since 2017, when Lady Eli won in 1:45.29.
The 5-year-old Ireland-bred mare and Ortiz traveled from the East Coast to compete. It was Florida-based trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.'s first career win at Santa Anita.
About 30 minutes later, Ortiz rode odds-on favorite Skippylongstocking to a three-quarters of a length victory in the $200,000 Hollywood Gold Cup for Joseph.
'It was amazing to get that Grade 1, then you don't want to go home with Skippy getting beat,' Joseph told track officials by phone. 'So for him to go out there and win a historic race like the Hollywood Gold Cup was truly special.'
In the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile, Britain-bred King of Gosford and jockey Flavien Prat won.
King of Gosford ran the distance on turf in 1:33.52 and paid $10.80, $4.80 and $3.60. Mi Hermano Ramon was second and Cabo Spirit was third.
In the Gold Cup, Skippylongstocking ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.64 and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.10. He increased his career earnings to over $3.6 million with 11 wins in 32 starts.
Midnight Mammoth returned $7.20 and $3.60 and Extensive paid $2.40 to show.
It was Skippylongstocking's eighth graded stakes victory at six different tracks.
'He's just a hard-knocking horse who takes his track with him everywhere he goes,' Joseph said. 'He's a sound horse and he's very strong mentally. We'll be forever grateful for him.'
In the Gamely, Be Your Best paid $6.20, $3.80 and $3.00. Lady Claypoole returned $8.20 and $4.60 and Liguria returned $5 to show.
'She is a very good filly and she showed it,' Joseph said. 'This is really big for us.'
Be Your Best has six wins in 20 career starts and earnings of over $1 million.

The 23-year-old Mayo appeared in his ninth game of the season on Friday after playing in 17 games while making his big league debut a year ago. Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. has The Seventy Percent Solution
NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. has The Seventy Percent Solution. While most athletes talk about the urge to give 100% or even 110%, the New York Yankees infielder thinks his success since returning from the injured list has been caused by limiting intensity. 'Just go at 70%. That's what's been working for me,' he said Friday night after his three-run, go-ahead homer in the first inning and four RBIs sparked the Yankees over the Boston Red Sox 9-6 in the opening meeting this year of the AL East rivals. 'Play at 70%: defense, offense, running, everything. Stay healthy. You don't overswing. You don't swing and miss as much, and you're a great player at 70%.' Chisholm is hitting .500 (8 for 16) with two homers, six RBIs and three steals in four games since returning Tuesday from a strained right oblique, an April 29 injury that caused him to miss 28 games. 'He's squaring balls up. He's got so much talent and power, and he doesn't have to go reach for it,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'That kind of wiry thing he's got inside him, he doesn't have to work too hard to generate it. So nice and easy is always good for Jazz.' Chisholm raised his season average this week from .181 to .223. 'He's a game-changer,' Yankees captain Aaron Judge said. 'When you step out there in Yankee Stadium, the adrenaline is going to be flowing. It's really just about slowing everything down and just take a nice, easy approach.' Solving the mindset issue was credited by Chisholm to assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler. 'Like my coach Six said, he said: `At 70% you're one of the best out there'. At 100%, I might be dog crap,' Chisholm explained, referring to Roessler by the coach's nickname. Chisholm prepared for a rehab stint at Double-A Somerset last weekend by joining coaches to review video of his minor league days. 'I've really heard that, all my life, is that I need to tone down on the way I play, because it's really over — it's electric, but you can be electric while being controlled at the same time,' Chisholm said. 'My 70% running is probably faster than a lot of guys in the league, too. So if at 70% I'm hitting balls 108, 109 (mph), playing great defense and out running and having stolen bases. I think that's where I should stay at.' He also mentioned a NASCAR analogy. 'It's super challenging for me because only thing I knew was like how to go fast,' Chisholm said. 'Basically I was Ricky Bobby growing up.' Chisholm had three hits, including an RBI single in the second, and stole two bases in three tries — the third was originally called safe but overturned in a video review. Anthony Volpe hit a two-run homer in the first off Walker Buehler, boosting the lead to 7-0. 'In his mind it might be 70%, but I think what everyone in the clubhouse loves and respects about him is that it looks like every night he's playing with his hair on fire and over 100%,' Volpe said. Following Oswaldo Cabrera's broken left ankle and the return of DJ LeMahieu from a calf strain, the Yankees moved Chisholm back to third base from second. He was a middle infielder for the Miami Marlins from 2020-22, was moved to center field from 2023-24, then inserted at third when the Yankees acquired him in a trade last July 27. Marchand scores in double OT, Panthers beat Oilers 5-4 to tie Stanley Cup series 1-1
Article content By Shane Jones EDMONTON — Brad Marchand had a pair of goals, including the winner in the second overtime, as the Florida Panthers evened their Stanley Cup final rematch with Edmonton, defeating the Oilers 5-4 in a wild Game 2 on Friday. Article content Marchand got a breakaway and was able to sneak a backhand shot through Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner's legs 8:05 into the second overtime. Article content Sam Bennett, Seth Jones and Dmitry Kulikov also scored for the Panthers, who improved to 9-3 on the road in post-season play. Sergei Bobrovsky made 42 saves to register the win in the Florida net. Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard, Leon Draisaitl and Corey Perry replied for the Oilers who had a five-game win streak snapped and dropped to 7-2 at home. Skinner made 37 saves in the loss. Florida started the scoring 2:07 into the opening period on an early power play as Nate Schmidt fed it across to Bennett and he deposited his 13th of the playoffs into the net before Skinner could get across, setting a new NHL record for road goals in a single post-season with 12. The Oilers tied it at 7:39 of the first frame as Kane was sprung on a partial breakaway and beat Bobrovsky up high with a shot that went off the post and in for his sixth of the playoffs. Edmonton then surged in front less than two minutes later with the teams playing four aside as Connor McDavid dropped it back to Bouchard and he got the rebound of his own blocked shot and then sent it past Bobrovsky from distance for his seventh. Article content Florida knotted the game back up with just over eight minutes to play in the frantic first as Eetu Luostarinen made a nice pass across to Jones, who had a wide-open net to rifle in his fourth of the playoffs. Edmonton jumped back in front a minute later after Bennett was sent off for goaltender interference after landing heavily on Skinner's right leg in a play reminiscent of the challenged goal in Game 1, as McDavid made a couple of incredible moves before passing it to Draisaitl who scored his 10th of the playoffs and third of the finals after being held without a goal in last year's final. It was the highest scoring first period in a final since 2016. Florida made it 3-3 at 7:23 of the second period as a Kulikov shot went off of Bouchard and then the post and in for his second. The Panthers took the lead with 7:51 to play in the middle period as Marchand sent it through Skinners' legs on a short-handed breakaway for his sixth. The game looked like it was over, but Edmonton engineered another comeback, scoring with just 18 seconds left in the third period and their goalie pulled as Perry found the puck in a mad scramble in front and managed to bang in his eighth of the playoffs to send the game to extra time. Florida had the best chances in the first overtime, with Marchand sliding a puck under Skinner only to hit the post and be fished to safety by John Klingberg, as well as Sam Reinhart missing the net on a clear breakaway.
