Mamelodi Sundowns axe five more stars as Pirates get midfielder

Mamelodi Sundowns have ramped up their squad overhaul by confirming the exits of five additional players, following the departures of Rivaldo Coetzee and Lebohang Maboe. As the Tshwane giants streamline their squad ahead of the new season, the club has parted ways with Sanele Tshabalala, Thabang Sibanyoni, Sifiso Ngobeni, Lucas Suarez, and Sipho Mbule.
Sipho Mbule has already secured a fresh start with Soweto giants Orlando Pirates, long before Sundowns made their official announcement. The midfielder's move to Mayfair marks a new chapter after a somewhat turbulent stint at Chloorkop.
Thabang Sibanyoni and Sifiso Ngobeni, who spent last season out on loan, will not be returning to Sundowns. The club opted not to reintegrate them into the squad, as it continues to offload players who no longer fit its long-term vision.
Ngobeni has attracted interest from Richards Bay FC, who are on the hunt for a left-back following Nkosikhona Ndaba's move to Orlando Pirates. Aged 27, Ngobeni found game time hard to come by at AmaZulu but could see more minutes at Richards Bay, where he's being closely monitored.
Lucas Suarez, who joined on loan in January, failed to establish himself in the heart of Sundowns' defence. Despite having an option to buy, the club decided not to make the deal permanent. Suarez's brief spell at the club ends without him making a significant impression.
Lebohang Maboe's departure has sparked a scramble for his signature. Durban City, Kaizer Chiefs, Sekhukhune United and Orlando Pirates are all reportedly vying for the 30-year-old's services.
Maboe impressed during his loan at SuperSport United, playing a crucial role in helping the club avoid relegation. However, with SuperSport selling their PSL status, he won't be staying.
'Durban City, coached by Gavin Hunt, could offer a sentimental return,' an insider noted. Chiefs, on the other hand, are eyeing him as a potential replacement for Yusuf Maart.
Maboe leaves Sundowns as one of the most decorated players of his era, having amassed 183 appearances, 20 goals, 23 assists, and nine trophies during his time at the club.
Where will the Mamelodi Sundowns stars land?

Kaizer Chiefs: Three positions Velebayi can play

Kaizer Chiefs' attack just got a fresh spark. Asanele Velebayi has joined the Betway Premiership giants and immediately brings options for coach Nasreddine Nabi. The winger's arrival at Kaizer Chiefs isn't just about adding another player; it's about opening tactical possibilities in the final third. Amakhosi announced the 22-year-old winger from Phillipi, Cape Town, after a contractual dispute between him and his former club. Orlando Pirates full list: 16 players gone Kaizer Motaung Jr welcomes Asanele Velebayi to Kaizer Chiefs. Image: Kaizer Chiefs 'We are happy to finally have Asanele with us,' Motaung Jr told the club's website. 'He is a great addition, and we believe he will add significant value because he is a perfect fit for our game model and the culture we have here at the club.' New coach says Orlando Pirates star needed love Velebayi is comfortable in either right or left wing, offering pace, dribbling, and the ability to stretch defences. Additionally, the new Kaizer Chiefs number 17 is also capable of slotting into the number 10 role, acting as a creative hub behind the striker, linking midfield and attack. That kind of flexibility gives Kaizer Chiefs more ways to unlock stubborn defences in the Betway Premiership. Velebayi's versatility means Nabi can rotate the front line without losing cohesion. Whether starting on the left, right, or behind the striker, he's expected to make an immediate impact and challenge for minutes alongside established names like Pule Mmodi and Glody Lilepo. Kaizer Chiefs go TOP of Betway Premiership log

Here's something Kaizer Chiefs' fans haven't been able to brag about in many, many seasons: Their team is TOP of the Betway Premiership standings! After 180 minutes of action in the 2025/26 season, Amakhosi are looking down on the 15 other teams. This comes after Kaizer Chiefs made it two wins from as many matches this season against Polokwane City at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening. Siphesihle Ndlovu scored the only goal of the match in the 79th minute. Amakhosi were coming off a 2-0 win away to Stellenbosch FC in their opener last Sunday. The Glamour Boys thus boast a perfect six points after two matches this season and are ahead of Durban City, Marumo Gallants and Sekhukhune United on goal difference. Perhaps most satisfying for the Amakhosi faithful is that they are six points ahead of bitter rivals Orlando Pirates who are down in a lowly 14th spot at present. Kaizer Chiefs have also scored three goals without conceding a goal thus far. The Glamour Boys will next be in action at home against Richards Bay on Tuesday, 19 August at 19:30. Petersen, Cross, McCarthy, Miguel (captain), Monyane, Cele, Mthethwa, Shabalala, Duba, Lilepo, Sirino Substitutes: Ntwari, Frosler, Kwinika, Mako, Ngcobo, Ndlovu, Mmodi, Vilakazi, Du Preez Coach: Khalil Ben Youssef Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.
