Alteogen Receives Positive CHMP Opinion for Aflibercept Biosimilar, 'EYLUXVI® (ALT-L9)'

Korea Heralda day ago
DAEJEON, South Korea, July 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Alteogen Inc. (KOSDAQ:196170) announced today that the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has adopted a positive opinion for EYLUXVI ® (code name: ALT-L9), a biosimilar referencing Eylea ® (aflibercept), co-developed with its subsidiary Alteogen Biologics Inc.
EYLUXVI ® has been recommended for approval in adult patients for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), visual impairment due to macular oedema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (branch [RVO] or central [RVO]), visual impairment due to diabetic macular oedema (DME), and visual impairment due to myopic choroidal neovascularisation (myopic CNV).
"We are pleased to receive a positive CHMP recommendation for EYLUXVI ®. This marks a significant milestone for Alteogen," said Soon-Jae Park, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of Alteogen. "We will provide a new, accessible treatment option for patients suffering from devastating ocular diseases such as wet age-related macular degeneration," he added.
The positive CHMP opinion was based on the totality of evidence comprising a comprehensive analytical, non-clinical and clinical data package. A randomized, double-masked, parallel group, multicenter Phase 3 study, conducted by Alteogen Biologics, demonstrated equivalent efficacy and comparable safety, immunogenicity, and pharmacokinetics (PK) profiles between EYLUXVI ® and reference aflibercept in patients with wet AMD.
Meanwhile, Alteogen licensed the development and commercialization rights for its anti-cancer drug Herceptin ® biosimilar, ALT-L2, for the Chinese market to Qilu Pharmaceutical in 2017. Qilu Pharmaceutical completed its development, obtained approval from Chinese regulatory authorities last year, and is currently marketing the product in China. If approved, EYLUXVI ® will be Alteogen's second commercialized biosimilar product.
About the ALT-L9 Phase 3 study
The study is a randomized, double-masked, parallel group phase 3 study conducted at 79 centers in 12 countries from June 2022 to February 2024, including follow-up through 52 weeks. 431 participants with wet AMD were randomized 1:1 to receive either ALT-L9 (n = 216) or Eylea® (n = 215). The primary efficacy endpoint of the study was the change from baseline in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA).

Ruling bloc to raise corporate tax, reversing Yoon-era cut

Corporate tax rate to be raised by 1%p to 25%, minimum holding for capital gains tax to be lowered to W1b South Korea's ruling bloc on Tuesday outlined plans to raise the corporate tax rate and expand the scope of capital gains taxation, signaling a U-turn from policies aimed at tax relief under the previous conservative Yoon Suk Yeol administration. Following a policy consultation held at the National Assembly in Seoul, the government and the ruling Democratic Party said they had agreed to raise the top corporate tax rate from the current 24 percent to 25 percent — the same level as in 2022, before former President Yoon's administration lowered it by 1 percentage point. The plan also includes widening the scope of those subject to capital gains tax. Under current law, individuals who own stocks worth more than 5 billion won (approximately $3.6 million) in a company listed on the Kospi, Kosdaq or Konex — the three markets operated by the Korea Exchange — are subject to capital gains tax when they sell. The ruling bloc aims to lower that threshold to 1 billion won per listed company to broaden the tax base. For unlisted companies, capital gains tax applies to all shareholders regardless of their ownership size. Rep. Chung Tae-ho of the Democratic Party of Korea, a senior member of the Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee, said the tax changes represent a 'normalization' of the system, restoring tax policies to the levels in place before the Yoon government. The corporate tax rate has seen several changes over the past decades, largely influenced by the shift in political power. It was lowered from 25 percent to 22 percent under President Lee Myung-bak in 2009, raised back to 25 percent under President Moon Jae-in in 2017, and then brought down to 24 percent in 2022 under the Yoon administration, which argued the cut would spur corporate investment. Chung, however, emphasized that 'there is little evidence that the corporate tax cut had a direct effect on investment,' adding that restoring the higher rate would help secure a stable tax base. Regarding the proposed dividend tax scheme, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said it is 'necessary,' citing the importance of redirecting capital flows from the real estate market to capital markets and supporting the growth of strategic and high-tech industries. Meanwhile, the government and the ruling party also discussed introducing a separate taxation scheme for dividend income to encourage shareholder-friendly practices and stimulate the capital market. Currently, dividend and interest income exceeding 20 million won per year is subject to progressive taxation, with rates reaching up to 49.5 percent. Under the proposed changes, a portion of dividend income could be taxed separately rather than being combined with other income, potentially reducing the overall tax burden. Specific criteria for this scheme have not yet been finalized. Tuesday's policy consultation reportedly lasted about 90 minutes and was attended by Democratic Party lawmakers from the Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee, along with First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance Lee Hyoung-il. Moving forward, the Democratic Party said it will continue discussions through a special task force on tax reform, chaired by three-term lawmaker Kim Yeong-jin, with Rep. Chung Tae-ho serving as secretary.

South Korea's population stagnates despite number of foreign residents topping 2 million

2024 census data shows nearly one-fifth of S. Koreans are aged 65 or older South Korea's population showed almost no growth in 2024, as an increase in foreign residents was offset by a continued decline in the number of Korean nationals, according to government data released Tuesday. The data also highlighted the country's aging population, with nearly 1 in 5 South Koreans now aged 65 or older. In its annual census data, Statistics Korea reported that the total population reached 51.8 million as of Nov. 1, 2024. This was an increase of just 31,000 from the previous year, or 0.1 percent. The population had previously declined for two straight years in 2021 and 2022, before rebounding in 2023. However, the growth in 2024 slowed from the previous year's 0.2 percent. The slowdown came as the number of Korean nationals fell by 77,000, or 0.2 percent, while the foreign population increased by 108,000, or 5.6 percent. The Korean national population has now decreased for four consecutive years since 2021. Out of the total population, 49.76 million were Korean nationals, making up 96.1 percent. Foreigners accounted for 2.04 million, or 3.9 percent, marking the first time the number of foreign residents surpassed 2 million. The foreign population had declined in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but began rising again in 2022. The recent increase is partly the result of an expanded employment permit system and efforts to attract international students. Among foreign residents, Korean-Chinese made up the largest group at 538,000, or 26.3 percent. Vietnamese residents saw the largest increase from the previous year, rising by 38,000, followed by Myanmar with 12,000 and Nepal with 10,000. When looking into the data by age groups, the overall working-age population, defined as those aged 15 to 64, fell by 283,000 to 36.26 million. The number of children aged 0 to 14 also dropped by 199,000 to 5.42 million. In contrast, the population aged 65 and older rose by 513,000 to 10.12 million, passing the 10 million mark for the first time. This resulted in proportion of seniors to increase, rising from 18.6 percent to 19.5 percent.
