Speed limit on Chester road where boy, 11, killed to be reduced
The speed limit on a road outside a school where a boy was killed is to be lowered after a review. Evan Rothwell, 11, died in hospital days after being struck by a car outside The King's School on Wrexham Road, Chester, Cheshire, on 12 November.His family led calls for the speed limit to be cut from 40mph "to prevent this from happening again" and a petition for it to be lowered gathered more than 14,000 signatures.Cheshire West and Chester Council said it had decided to reduce the current speed limit outside of The King's School on Wrexham Road to 30mph following an independent review.
The council said the outcome of the independent review commissioned by the authority confirmed the current 40mph speed limit had been set appropriately and in accordance with national guidance provided by the Department for Transport, and that the design of the junction was adequate.However, the council said having considered all the information and public opinion expressed through petitions and communications, it had "exercised its discretion" in implementing a lower speed limit from next month for "an initial period" of 18 months.It added the review also highlighted a number of matters of concern relating to driver behaviour and congestion caused by traffic seeking to access The King's School. The council said it continued to work closely with Cheshire Police and with the school to address those matters.Cheshire Police has been contacted by the BBC.
Jessica Garner of the Make Wrexham Road Safe campaign told BBC Radio Merseyside the move was a "monumental achievement and a milestone for our campaign".She added: "We are united in the common belief that children should be safe to travel to school and the strength of opinion has been significant as a contributing factor to [the council's] decision-making in lowering the speed limit."
'Prevent this from happening again'
A memorial service for Evan took place at St Werburgh's Church in Chester on 14 December.The congregation wore Christmas hats, jumpers and antlers to remember Evan.At the service, Evan's parents had reiterated their calls for the speed limit to be lowered "to prevent this from happening again".Paying tribute to Evan, the family said he "made them proud every day".They said: "Evan loved life and used his talents to entertain and bring joy to others. The family added he "lit up the world around him".

Emergency services dispatched a huge squad - made up of an "ambulance, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle, the Hazardous Area Response Team and the Beds and Herts Critical Care Scheme" - to the scene. The vehicle fell from Car Park 1 and one man is now in hospital with "serious" injuries. In a statement, a spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said: "Emergency services were called shortly before 11am to an incident involving a single vehicle at a multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport. "Police, ambulance and fire crews are on scene. One person has been taken to hospital with injuries which are thought to be serious. "Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police via our website or on 101, quoting the reference 121 of 15 June." A spokesperson for Luton Airport has confirmed that arriving vehicles are having to be diverted following the incident. The spokesperson said: 'Emergency services were called shortly before 11am following a single vehicle incident at multi-storey car park 1. " Following the incident, one person has been taken to hospital for further assessment. "Airport staff are managing the exit of departing vehicles. "Arriving vehicles are being redirected to the airport's mid-stay car park until further notice. "There is no disruption to wider airport operations.' More to follow... Warning issued to Sainsbury's customers after two years of Nectar points stolen
Experts have issued a fresh warning to Sainsbury's customers after a shopper reported having two years of her Nectar points stolen. This is Money revealed earlier this year that Nectar had introduced a 'lock' feature on its loyalty card scheme, meaning any account can be freezed until the customer decides to spend their reward points. The announcement came after an investigation revealed that 12.5 million Nectar points worth nearly £63,000 had been stolen from our readers over the period of a year. And just last week, another customer reported on social media that 3,000 points had been stolen from her account after they were used in a Twickenham branch. She posted: 'Someone has stolen 3,000 of my Nectar points? 'I have never been to Twickenham in my life and I have been saving these points for two years to help pay for Christmas. Please look into this.' The claims have prompted cybersecurity experts to urge customers to take a fresh look at their accounts in order to prevent potentially criminal activity. 'It's especially important to monitor accounts more often just before Christmas,' Jake Moore, Eset's Global Security Advisor told The Sun. 'This is usually when criminals target accounts with points that have been accumulated over the year.' He added that accounts should be checked 'frequently to detect and report any unauthorised actions promptly'. Only primary users of the account should be able to lock and unlock spending on their Nectar accounts with the new locking feature, while additional collectors will only be able to collect points. It was brought in to allow customers to start saving their points again without fear of them being stolen by fraudsters. Thankfully most of the customers affected in This is Money's investigation were refunded by Sainsbury's, which owns Nectar. A Nectar spokesperson today told MailOnline: 'Nectar is one of the UK's biggest loyalty schemes, with over 23 million members. 'The security of our customer accounts is our highest priority and the proportion of those impacted by fraud each year is very small. 'We have a range of measures which detect, and in many cases prevent fraud, including our Spend Lock feature. 'Our Nectar Helpline team are on hand to support any customer who suspects they may have been a victim of fraud.'

He collapsed on the ground and emergency responders performed life-saving measures until he was transported to hospital in a life-threatening condition. Officers attended the scene after hearing gunshots around 7:56 pm, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd confirmed to reporters. Witnesses were able to help identify the male suspect in the shooting who is in custody. Redd confirmed that the suspect suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital by cops.
