
Complaining all the time? Neuroscientist explains why this is bad for the brain and how to fix it
Are you someone who constantly complains, judges, and criticizes? Well, this behaviour may be doing you more harm than you realise. Beyond spoiling your mood, this could also be changing your brain for the worse.
Emily McDonald is an Arizona-based neuroscientist and mindset coach, has explained the downside of being a chronic complainer. 'Complaining, judging, or criticizing others can actually change your brain to make you less focused and productive and decrease your problem-solving skills,' the neuroscientist said. She also explained the science behind it and also shared some effective ways to fix it.
Constant complaining wires your brain negatively
When you make complaining a habit, your
brain
starts to feed off negativity and starts to notice problems first.
'Every time you complain or criticize, you strengthen that pathway in your brain. This is Hebb's law: neurons that fire together wire together. So if you're constantly focused on what you don't like, you are wiring your brain to see more problems,' McDonald said.
Second, this behaviour can actually shrink the region of the brain responsible for focus and decision-making. This means judging and criticizing actually messes up your brain's ability to make right and informed decisions.

'Thinking positively and expressing gratitude strengthens the prefrontal cortex, which improves your ability to focus and create the life of your dreams. Every time you speak or type a comment on here, you are training your brain. So train it to look for joy and abundance because you don't get what you want in life you get what your brain is wired for,' the neuroscientist shares.

The nutritionist narrowed down on five foods, all offering several lucrative health benefits, from being low on glycemic index to higher fibre for faster metabolism: 1. Black beans Black bean is a good source of fibre.(Shutterstock) First up on this list is black beans. Charmaine recommended them because of their high soluble fibre. This helps both gut health and improves insulin sensitivity. She said,'Black beans are fantastic for your gut health and for reversing insulin resistance because they're so high in soluble fibre. It is also high in magnesium as well which can support glucose metabolism.' 2. Dark leafy greens Add darker greens to your salads!(Shutterstock) You can always go darker with your greens, and this comes with more added benefits. Charmaine added that the darker you go, the more antioxidants you get. She said, "Eating more dark leafy greens can give you more antioxidants, more calcium and also can improve insulin sensitivity.' 3. Quinoa Quinoa salad is one of the post-workout meal ideas.(Shutterstock) Carbohydrates, like rice, bread, are a big concern for people suffering from insulin resistance, as they can quickly spike blood sugar. This is why carbs that are low on the glycemic index are preferred. Nutritionist Charmaine shared that quinoa is one such grain that is low on the glycemic index. For the uninformed, the glycemic index (GI) is a scale that measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar after eating. She explained,'Quinoa is a low glycemic whole grain, and it is fantastic for substituting white rice that's too high in glycemic index for people with type 2 diabetes. So get some quinoa, it is super quick to cook.' 4. Farro Farro is a grain with nutty, chewy taste.(Shutterstock) Another wheat grain to include is farro. In fact, it's quite ancient and has been around for years due to its robust nutritional content. Charmaine spotlighted its protein and fibre content and added, 'You can also do farro as well. Farro is very, very high in protein and in fibre. And it has a chewy texture.' 5. But peaches, despite being sweet, support insulin sensitivity. The nutritionist elaborated, "Peaches are sweet, but they are low in glycemic index and very high in fibre, Vitamin C, so make sure you eat more peach this season." ‘In mission mode' for 1st Made-in-India chip by 2025-end—Modi on big tech bet in I-Day speech
The prime minister's comments come two days after the approval of four new semiconductor manufacturing facilities under India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) for applications in defence, electric vehicles and solar power. These facilities are to be set up in Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of Rs 4,600 crore, amplifying employment opportunities for skilled professionals in the electronic manufacturing ecosystem. 'We are working in mission mode in the semiconductor sector. Made-in-India chips will hit markets by the end of this year,' he said. 'We have decided to make India self-reliant in energy, taking several initiatives in solar, hydrogen and nuclear sectors.' Bengaluru: India is preparing to roll out its first domestically produced semiconductor by the end of this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort Friday, emphasised the pressing need for the country to be technology-driven to achieve success. For instance, SicSem Private Limited is collaborating with UK's Class-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd to manufacture Silicon Carbide devices in Info Valley, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. This will be the first commercial compound fabrication facility in the country, according to a government press release. Also in Info Valley, 3D Glass Solutions will be setting up a packaging and embedding glass substrate unit. In Andhra Pradesh, a semiconductor manufacturing unit for applications in mobile phones and automobiles will be set up in a tie-up with South Korea-based Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP). Punjab will also house a manufacturing facility through the expansion of Continental Device India Private Limited's (CDIL) unit in Mohali. 'These would complement the growing world class chip design capabilities coming up in the country which are propelled by design infrastructure support provided by the Government to 278 academic institutions and 72 start-ups,' the government statement read. Later this year, the country will host the fourth edition of Semicon India 2025 in New Delhi. This year, the conference will focus on building semiconductor powerhouses. For the first time, the exhibition will have international pavilions from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and 15 other countries. What India's done so far Joining the global chip circuit Modi has previously pushed for 'betting on India', especially 'when the chips are down', by banking on India's semiconductor revolution. By 2030, India's chip market is expected to grow to $100 billion. India is setting foot in the global semiconductor industry, which is currently dominated by countries like Taiwan, Japan, China and the US. More than 60 percent of semiconductors in the world are presently manufactured by Taiwan, exposing global supply chains to alarming risks in the middle of geopolitical tensions. India has joined the race, along with the US, EU, Japan and South Korea, to be self reliant in semiconductor production. With rich sources of chemicals, minerals and gases used for semiconductor manufacturing, India is seen as a country which could rise as a contributor to the primary pillars of chip manufacturing supply chain, such as equipment building, material supply, and research and development. Nonetheless, India needs the right technology and policy to realise a semiconductor future, besides ensuring a strong industry-academia engagement, where academia works on industry-relevant problems, and industry must have a vision for the next 10 years to drive futuristic research through academia. Government subsidies and support to build fabrication facilities are pertinent. That said, as policy experts observe, fabrication facilities will take longer for companies to see profits. The longer time in returns might lead to the fabrication laboratories to be uneconomical, and will warrant multiple rounds of subsidies. It is also important to secure intellectual property rights for semiconductor designs. Reports suggest that India has lower domestic control of patents, unlike countries like China. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), approved by the Union Cabinet in December 2021, outlays Rs 76,000 crore to provide support for investment in semiconductor fabrication, display and manufacturing and chip design. ISM is focused on a long-term strategy for the manufacturing and design ecosystem by promoting indigenous Intellectual Property (IP) generation, while training Indian youth and encouraging international investments. ‘Weird mash-up of whale, seal and Pokémon': New ‘nightmare Muppet' fossil sheds light on evolution; tiny predator had shark-like jaws, bulging eyes
Long before whales became the gentle giants of today, some of their ancestors were small, fierce, and strange. A chance find on an Australian beach has revealed a rare, entirely new species, Janjucetus dullardi , that could unlock new clues about whale evolution . The 25-million-year-old juvenile specimen, small enough to fit in a single bed, was identified in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. It had bulging, tennis-ball-sized eyes, a shark-like snout, and sharp teeth designed for hunting. 'It was, let's say, deceptively cute,' said Erich Fitzgerald, senior curator of vertebrate paleontology at Museums Victoria. 'It might have looked like some weird mash-up between a whale, a seal and a Pokémon, but they were very much their own thing.' The partial skull, including ear bones and teeth, was found in 2019 along Victoria's Jan Juc Beach, a site known for unusual whale fossils. Janjucetus dullardi is only the fourth species ever identified in the mammalodontid group, early whales that lived during the Oligocene Epoch, about 34–23 million years ago. These predators, around three metres long, were an early branch of the lineage that led to modern baleen whales, but looked radically different. 'They may have had tiny little nubbins of legs just projecting as stumps,' Fitzgerald said, a mystery that will remain unless a more complete skeleton is found. The species name honours Ross Dullard, the amateur fossil hunter who spotted something black protruding from a cliff during a low-tide search. When he poked it, a tooth fell out. 'I thought, geez, we've got something special here,' he said. Museums Victoria confirmed this week it was a new species. 'It's only the chosen few… that actually get preserved as fossils,' Fitzgerald noted. Researchers say Janjucetus dullardi could help reveal how early whales fed, moved, and adapted to ancient warm oceans, insights that could inform how modern marine life responds to climate change. Dullard plans to mark the occasion with a 'fossil party' featuring cetacean-themed games and whale-shaped jello, to celebrate his nightmare Muppet find. 'I've had sleepless nights,' he admitted. 'I've dreamt about this whale.'
