As discussions around the 8th Pay Commission continue among central government employees and pensioners, reports suggest that its implementation is likely to be delayed from the earlier expected date of January 1, 2026. Now, one key question is drawing attention: Will those retiring on or after January 1, 2026, still benefit if the pay commission's recommendations are delayed?
8th Pay Commission: What's The Status?
The 8th Central Pay Commission, which will review and revise the salary structure, allowances, and pensions of over 50 lakh central government employees and around 65 lakh pensioners, was announced by the central government in January 2025. Its terms of reference (ToR) and members have not been finalised yet. However, last month, the government issued a circular informing that various vacancies, around 35 posts, will be filled on a deputation basis for the 8th Pay Commission.
Pay commissions are typically constituted every 10 years, with the last (7th Pay Commission) being implemented from January 1, 2016. Its term is coming to an end on December 31, 2025.
As its chairman, members and ToR have not been finalised yet, widespread expectations point to delay in its implementation to late 2026 or early 2027, against the expected timeline of January 1, 2026.
Why Is It Getting Delayed?
There has been no formal communication from the Ministry of Finance or the Department of Expenditure on the timeline. However, delays could be attributed to fiscal considerations and alternative pay adjustment mechanisms like the Aykroyd formula and inflation-linked increments, though they have not replaced the need for a full-fledged commission.
Yes, if the commission's recommendations are implemented with a retrospective date (as in the past), those retiring after January 1, 2026, will receive revised pension and salary arrears. For example, when the 7th Pay Commission was implemented in 2016, many beneficiaries received arrears for months before the actual rollout date.
What Kind of Salary Hike Is Expected?
While official figures are yet to emerge, analysts and employee unions speculate that the minimum basic pay may increase from Rs 18,000 to Rs 26,000, representing a hike of around 40-44 per cent. According to several reports, the fitment factor, a key multiplier for revising salaries, could be 1.96 in the 8th pay commission, although this remains unconfirmed.
If the fitment factor is 1.92, then Level 1 government employees may see a salary jump of around Rs 15,000 per month, which is about a 40% increase in take-home pay under the 8th Pay Commission.

1 2 Jaipur: The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has sought governor Haribhau Badge's permission to prosecute Congress politician and former minister of cooperation Udailal Anjana in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment of managers for Gram Seva Cooperative Societies (GSS). The case centres on the appointment of over 1,100 individuals who, officials say, were hired in violation of prescribed norms during the 2022–23 recruitment process when Congress was in power. Many of those selected were reportedly unqualified. Sources said ACB has already received approval to investigate some officers from the cooperation department under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Anjana, a senior Congress functionary and former Lok Sabha MP, has been a prominent figure in state politics since the late 1980s. A three-time MLA from Nimbahera assembly seat, Anjana was also elected to Lok Sabha from the Chittorgarh seat after defeating former Union defence minister Jaswant Singh in the 1998 parliamentary elections. The case adds to Congress' recent troubles, following the former minister Mahesh Joshi's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in April last year for his alleged involvement in the Rs 900-crore Jal Jeevan Mission scam. An ACB officer said on condition of anonymity that the previous govt decided to regularise appointments made before 2017. For recruitments made after that, the Cooperative Recruitment Board was tasked with the process. But according to officials, key checks were ignored. The cooperative dept later raised concerns about the process and requested detailed data of eligible candidates, leading to further scrutiny of appointments. After allegations emerged linking him to the recruitment scam, Anjana told TOI Sunday he had nothing to hide and was ready to face any inquiry. Accusing BJP govt of targeting him Anjana said the govt should first investigate its own cooperative minister — Gautam Kumar Dak — before probing others. "He (Dak) has been accused of shielding individuals involved in corruption worth crores by using his political influence," Anjana said. He also pointed to alleged irregularities in the distribution of tractors through the Rajkishan Custom Hiring Centre. The ACB has been investigating suspected irregularities in recruitment within the cooperative department for several months. In Feb 2025, the agency launched a probe into a suspected scam involving the unlawful regularisation of nearly 100 contractual employees in cooperative banks in rural parts of Jalore district. ACB teams reportedly seized documents indicating irregularities in the screening process conducted between 2021 and 2023.

Dy CM confirms some govt employees among ineligible recipients of scheme
He confirmed that some govt employees were among the ineligible recipients. "There will be no legal action against them," he said. Under the scheme, eligible women in the age group of 21-65 are entitled to a monthly aid of Rs 1,500. The govt had made it clear that only those with an annual income of Rs 2.5 lakh or less could apply for the benefits, and govt employees would not be eligible. The total misuse of govt funds is estimated at around Rs 3.5 crore. The deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar was in Pune to attend the International Agriculture Hackathon at the Agriculture College in Shivajinagar. Responding to questions on heavy rainfall in parts of the state, Pawar said govt has instructed local administrations to conduct panchnamas to assess crop damage. He said govt has already arranged funds, and once the damage reports are submitted, appropriate steps would be taken. On reports about increased firearm licences issued by Pune Police between 2021 and 2023, he said that all the applications would be reviewed. "The police will be asked to verify the background of all individuals granted licences during this period. Without valid need, their licences will be revoked," he said. The deputy CM added that he had received similar complaints from Beed earlier. At that time, the SP had reviewed all the licences, and cancelled some, he said, and added that the same thing can be done in Pune as well. Unrest among Nagaland NCP MLAs NCP chief Ajit Pawar said on Sunday that a merger of all seven NCP MLAs in Nagaland with the governing Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) was triggered by growing unrest among them due to development projects in their constituencies getting stalled. Pawar said the MLAs had met him in Mumbai two to three months ago to express their concerns. "I told them we could speak to Nagaland CM [Neiphiu Rio] and request him to ensure their issues are resolved, especially since NCP was supporting the ruling [NDPP-BJP] govt in the state. I also discussed the matter with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who assured me that he would speak to the Nagaland CM," Pawar said. He clarified that there was no violation of anti-defection law since all seven MLAs switched sides together. "I was unwell for the last two days, so I have not received detailed updates. But I will speak with the party's state president in Nagaland to review the situation," Pawar added. After the 2023 Nagaland elections, NCP had emerged as the third-largest party with seven MLAs.

Chandigarh: Senior IRS officer held in `45 lakh bribery case
Hours after their arrest, a Special CBI Court in Chandigarh on Sunday remanded IRS officer Amit Kumar Singal and his associate Harsh Kotak in 14-day judicial custody in a bribery case involving `45 lakh. A 2007-batch officer, Singal is currently posted as Additional Director General at the Directorate of Tax Payers Services. The CBI told the court that Singal and Kotak had allegedly demanded Rs 45 lakh from pizza chain owner and businessman Sanam Kapoor. While Kotak was arrested Saturday, Singal was taken into custody from his Delhi residence Sunday after the CBI obtained necessary authorisation. In its remand application, the CBI submitted that Singal acknowledged the `45 lakh bribe demand in a phone call with Kapoor and later accepted `25 lakh through Kotak. CBI said the bribe was sought in exchange for favourable treatment after Kapoor allegedly received a retaliatory tax notice in February 2025.
