Target vows to maintain ‘2024 prices' for some back-to-school shopping

USA Today24-06-2025
Target has promised not to raise costs for back-to-school items this year, offering a sigh of relief to customers who enjoyed 2024's prices.
Shoppers will also enjoy seeing last year's list of 20 must-have supplies that cost less than $20, as well as its top-selling $5 backpack, the retail giant announced on Monday, June 23.
"This is such an important time for everyone preparing to head back to class — or heading off to school for the first time," Target's Executive Vice President Rick Gomez said in a news release. "The Target team will be there for families by holding last year's prices on key school supplies and standing tall for unrivaled style, quality and exceptional value. We're proud to be a part of back-to-school and back-to-college traditions."
The retailer also vowed to offer discounts for students and teachers. Also returning this summer is the company's annual Target Circle Week event with special deals for school supplies, electronics and other products.
Not everything is the same though, as Target is launching a new school supplies lineup that includes 35-cent notebooks, composition books starting at 50 cents and lunch sacks at $3.

When is Target Circle Week?
This year's Target Circle Week is set for July 6-12, offering back-to-school deals for K-12 and college students.
Target Circle 360 members will have access to these deals a day early, starting July 5.
Exclusive benefits continue for members of the company's Target Circle 360 program with a 50% discount on a one-year membership through Sept. 13, according to Target.

Tesla driver stunned after spotting massive police presence at Supercharger station: 'No less than 7 cops'

Vandalism and Tesla are not too unfamiliar with one another. While an onslaught of Tesla vandalism occurred earlier in 2025, a Redditor showed this offense may not be over yet. In the post, the Redditor shared a photo of a Tesla Supercharger station blocked off by caution tape. Their caption read, "There [were] no less than 7 cops at the Tesla chargers at the Target on Sleater Kinney. All the chargers were taped off." Though the user's intention with the post was to share the waste of police force over a non-violent crime, the vandalism and negativity toward electric vehicles does present a rather troublesome issue. As owning an EV can be a step to decreasing the tailpipe exhaust of gas-powered cars, which contributes to rising global temperatures and dirty fuel pollution, the electric transition is a largely important step to a clean energy future. Combined with other green measures, such as charging using solar panels, EV ownership can be even further eco-forward. EnergySage is a great resource to get free solar estimates. Some Tesla vandalism has nothing to do with anti-EV sentiments, but more so with billionaire CEO Elon Musk and his previous political team-up with Donald Trump. Regardless of personal beliefs, Tesla is one of the most well-known EV brands, and negative publicity, such as vandalism, may persuade people not to invest in electric vehicles if they believe their cars or necessary charging stations could become a target. Plus, as one commenter pointed out, Tesla stations aren't the only ones affected, mentioning their experience seeing Nissan Leaf chargers getting vandalized. Another commenter shared their input on taped-off, vandalized charging stations, saying, "I'm all for the boycott of Tesla, but I really wish people would leave the charging infrastructure alone. I know they profit off it, but it's also open to all other brands and many of us need them in critical places." Would you be more likely to get an EV if it helped cut your energy costs? Walmart launches new stores to target younger audiences

Walmart has launched a fleet of themed mobile stores called "Walmart Delivers," designed to engage Gen Z with pop‑up retail experiences, giveaways, and photo ops at events across the U.S. running August through November 2025 That's part of a broad plan to make the chain a little more like rival Target, cool without really caring about cool. The campaign has a clear message it wants to get across: Walmart is a hip place for young people where executives clearly know and regularly use all the latest slang. Kids, 5he chain seems to think, always love it when mom and dad try to learn their lingo. Younger folks never stop using terms because adults have co-opted them into the mainstream, nor do they cringe at all when their musical icons turn up in T-Mobile or light beer commercials. Walmart (WMT) is about as hip as your 50-year-old English teacher who tries to incorporate Kendrick Lamar lyrics into his lesson plan. It's a noble idea, but it's one best left to '80s movies, as it's nearly impossible to be the old guy at the club who actually comes off like he belongs there. More Retail: Supermarket inflation: Beef prices soar as egg prices fallLevi's shares plan to beat tariffs, keep holiday prices downAmazon's quiet pricing twist on tariffs stuns shoppers This has not stopped Walmart from trying to co-opt the younger generations by describing its new mobile stores as: "Your FYP on wheels." Don't know what that means? You're not supposed to if you're over maybe 35, but according to Google, it's "for you page," as in a web page filled with so many things you like, it seems like it's just for you. When you get over the cringe factor, Walmart actually has an idea that might appeal to its target audience. The retailer has decided to create a fleet of mobile stores/retail experiences designed to appeal to specific groups of younger customers. "Walmart is hitting the road with a fleet of head-turning delivery trucks, packed with experiences to level up what you love. We're making stops across the U.S. and rolling up with photo-worthy moments, customizable giveaways, & much more. Because whatever you're into - we get it, we have it, and we can deliver it. Who knew?" the chain shared in a press release. Basically, Walmart wants to show some very specific groups that it offers items they regularly shop for. Comparison shows how online prices stack up against in-store tags at big box stores

A new price-matching policy at Target is now in effect. As of July 29, the Twin Cities-based company announced it was killing the previous price-matching policy, where it would match prices with Amazon or Walmart. The new policy only lets shoppers price match Target's in-store prices with its own online prices. That had us wondering if in-store and online prices are that different at big box stores. The price match shift is a decision Dr. Kingshuk Sinha, who heads up supply chain studies at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, has been tracking. "Maybe some of the benefits of the original value propositions are no longer relevant," Sinha said. "Second, that's not the norm in the industry. Neither Target nor Amazon chooses to do Price Matching because that's not profitable. Certainly, I am sure they have made that judgment." Sinha added he doesn't expect much of a difference between Target's online prices with their in-store tags. "It's good to keep prices consistent so you are not sending mixed signals," he said. Sinha says if everything were cheaper online, there would be less motivation to go into stores. WCCO put his theory to the test. At Target, a floor lamp WCCO found was $150 in-store. Online, it was the same. A coffee maker was $129 both in-store and online and a designer bench that's $240 in-store had the same price online. At Walmart, a TV was $448 in-store AND online, and a robotic vacuum that was $329 in-store was not available online. A suitcase we found was $99 in-store, and a similar one was $90 online. At Best Buy, we found a laptop was $699 in-store and online. A printer at the store was $50 less online. Overall, some differences, but prices are mostly comparable. That is, until you see something else you like. "If you can bring foot traffic in a place like Target, there's a lot of potential," Sinha said.
