Colts QB coach explains how 'consistency' led to Anthony Richardson benching

Was Anthony Richardson just consistently inconsistent? According to one Indianapolis Colts coach, that might have been the case. With the former No. 4 overall selection being passed up on the Colts QB1 job in favor of Daniel Jones, Cameron Turner, Colts quarterback coach, was asked whether the coaching staff failed Richardson or vice versa. "I feel like I've tried everything I can do and I feel like he's giving great effort in that aspect, too," Turner said. "I don't think either way, one or the other. I just think, right now, the consistency is not where we wanted it to be." Turner's comments add a bit more context surrounding head coach Shane Steichen's explanation regarding the benching. Steichen referenced Jones' 2022 season with the Giants – which resulted in a wild-card round playoff victory over the Minnesota Vikings – as a reason the passer has showcased enough talent to warrant another shot at a starting gig. MORE: Anthony Richardson's agent questions trust in Colts Jones hasn't quite had the same success since that playoff victory, throwing 10 touchdowns to 13 interceptions in the two seasons (16 games) since, resulting in his 2024 release from the New York Giants, and later, his signing with the Vikings. Richardson's road with the Colts has been winding. The 2023 No. 4 overall pick has shown flashes on the field, but has also been the subject of various criticisms, including from teammates, off of it. Jones signed a one-year, $14 million with the Colts during free agency. That number potentially indicated a quarterback competition with Richardson for Indy's starting job. As it turns out, the competition may not have been much of one at all. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. Quenton Nelson on Colts QB changes: 'I would be lying if I said it wasn't (frustrating)'

INDIANAPOLIS — DeForest Buckner had a message for his Colts teammates as the battle for the starting quarterback job raged between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson during training camp. A message he wanted to resonate for a franchise that has been searching for some semblance of continuity at quarterback since Andrew Luck's shocking retirement in 2019. Buckner has been in this position longer than just about anybody else in the Indianapolis locker room. Before he was traded to the Colts, Buckner spent his first four seasons in San Francisco, playing under the same kind of quarterback uncertainty he's gone through in Indianapolis, and he learned an important lesson in his time with the 49ers. 'In moments, with guys who haven't experienced certain things, sometimes I do go back to my experience in San Francisco,' Buckner said. 'Telling guys, like I've been saying, as long as we're doing our job around the quarterback position and we're doing it at a high level, we can accomplish special things. … Jimmy (Garappolo)'s my guy, and he's a great quarterback, but you see it all the time, you don't have straight-up elite quarterbacks in the Super Bowl every year, or in the playoffs.' Buckner wasn't trying to say a team doesn't need an elite quarterback to win. What he was saying is the Colts can still be successful with either player in the starting role. When Jimmy Garoppolo finally stayed healthy in San Francisco for an entire season, Buckner's 49ers reached the Super Bowl, coming within a quarter of hosting the trophy. But he is fully aware of the importance of the quarterback position. Jones will be the 15th starting quarterback of Buckner's 10 seasons in the NFL, and the star defensive tackle has been to the playoffs just twice. An ever-revolving door at quarterback is the biggest reason for the Colts' four-year playoff drought, and the constant churn at the game's most important position has taken its toll on the roster. When Jones starts the season opener against the Dolphins, he'll be the seventh different opening-day starter in Indianapolis since 2018, Luck's final NFL season. 'I would be lying if I said it wasn't (frustrating),' All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson said. 'You look around the league and just look at the consistency of having Patrick Mahomes or a quarterback behind you that's been the franchise player for years and years and years, and getting to build the chemistry with that quarterback year after year is something that there is an advantage to when it comes to o-line play.' Richardson was supposed to stop the revolving door at quarterback. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old hasn't been able to establish himself as a bona fide starter in the NFL, held back by injuries, inaccuracy and inexperience in everything asked of quarterbacks. 'Obviously, we'd all love to go into it with Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes,' assistant general manager Ed Dodds said. 'But that's not life.' Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen's decision to start Jones over Richardson left the locker room with conflicting emotions. 'I'm excited for Daniel, confident in him and his ability, what he can do for this team,' wide receiver Alec Pierce said. 'I feel for AR, that's definitely a tough spot to be in; I thought he handled it like a pro, thought they came in, had a good battle and ultimately made it a tough decision on the coaches.' Steichen made the final decision. The Indianapolis head coach consulted with principal owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon and general manager Chris Ballard before revealing the decision to the team on Tuesday, but it was ultimately his decision. 'Whoever he gave the keys to the car to was going to put us in the best position to win,' veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin said. Indianapolis is going to need its entire roster to put Jones in a position to win. When Jones led the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, he was a key cog in a full-team effort, the kind Buckner has been emphasizing ever since the Colts declared an open competition for the starting quarterback job in the offseason. 'Whoever the quarterback is, as long as we're supporting him and taking some of the pressure off of him, that's going to help us go very far,' Buckner said. 'I truly believe that.' The Colts now know the hand they're playing. And it's not time to fold now.

Why Matthew Golden will 'smash' for fantasy managers

Yahoo Fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and contributor Ray Garvin break down the Packers receiving core and why the Packers rookie is a great value in fantasy drafts. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript A couple of reasons why I think you gotta be taking Golden. Number one, I like, even if you don't have a player take on Matthew Golden, which of course I do, but even if you don't, like this is a first-round pick who's going outside the top 100 picks in fantasy football, I think mostly just because of the skepticism of how crowded, one, how crowded this room is, which to me, I hate when people are like, I'm afraid of this room, it's too crowded. When, especially when, when the prices are low like this, like the, the asking price to get in here is not very big, you should be leaning into that volatility. You should be leaning into that ambiguity cause what if Matthew Golden just emerges as the top guy here? And right now, I love Jay Reed, but Jay Reed's in a walking boot. Like right now I do think Matthew Golden does project as the number one wide receiver of this team. Also, this is supposed to be one of the best passing, this is one of supposed to be one of the best. Offenses in the NFL and people are completely hands off on their passing game player. Only Josh Jacobs is going inside the top 90 overall picks. And this industry-wide is supposed to be a really good offense this year. And Ray, I think it's because everybody's overindexed on what happened last year with the passing volume because of Jordan Love's injury. So that's like the just non-player take reasons why I think Matthew Golding is a smash. Like you take him in round 10 every single time. But I also think His ability to win over the top on these deep inbreaking routes, I don't think he's a perfect, like true number one receiver right off the bus, but the dig route success rate, the post route success rate, those are ones where, like, they're staple big play throws that they, they wanna throw off play action in this offense. So, again, I think there are like structural non-player take reasons, but also player take reasons why I think Matthew Golden just makes so much sense in this range. schematically, he fits as well. Even if Jaden Reid wasn't in a walking boot as much as you and I both like him, the Green Bay Backers have showed you exactly how they want to use him. He's gonna be in the slot, and that's what he's going to do, unfortunately for us all. You've got Christian Watson, who a lot of People forget how good he was when he was on the field. He wasn't on there much, but when he was on the field, his ability to stretch the field vertically opened up that Green Bay passing attack. Matthew Golden can do that and some, and I know some people cite some of the yards per route run metrics in college. All I'm gonna say is you just needed to watch in Texas, OK? I've got zero physical ability concerns about Matthew Golden's, ability to win on the inside or outside. Close
